  • Bills' Vontae Davis: Retires midway through Week 2 loss

Davis didn't join the Bills on the field for the second half of Sunday's loss to the Chargers after apparently revealing his intention to retire from professional football, Mike Rodak of ESPN.com reports.

In a surprising decision, Davis reportedly told teammates and the coaching staff in the locker room during the intermission that he had no desire to continue his 10-year career, resulting in the Bills finishing the contest with only three healthy cornerbacks. Davis currently remains on the 53-man roster, but it's expected that he'll either be released or formally file for retirement in the coming days to open up a spot for the Bills to add another player. If this is indeed the end for Davis, he'll walk away from the NFL with 22 career interceptions over 121 games with Miami, Indianapolis and Buffalo.

  • Bills' Vontae Davis: Team debut to wait

Davis is inactive for Sunday's season opener in Baltimore, Mike Rodak of ESPN.com reports.

Davis still isn't fully up to speed following November surgery to repair a core-muscle injury, so while his debut with the Bills isn't too far off and he's actually being deemed a healthy scratch, Phillip Gaines will take the starting cornerback role for the opener opposite Tre-Davious White.

  • Bills' Vontae Davis: Still fighting for starting spot

Davis, acquired by the Bills in free agency this offseason, has yet to cement a starting role and is being pushed by Phillip Gaines, Mitchell Courtney of the Bills' official site reports.

Davis had been the presumed starter since his signing, but he hasn't been as natural a fit to the team's defense as perhaps the team originally expected, and he looked silly at times during Sunday's preseason loss to the Bengals. The veteran still has a lot to offer and the hunch remains he'll win the starting job across from Tre'Davious White, but he has clearly has more to prove to the coaching staff with only one more preseason game remaining.

  • Bills' Vontae Davis: Past groin injury

Davis said this week he has no limitations in his recovery from groin surgery ahead of voluntary offseason workouts later this month, Nick Veronica of The Buffalo News reports. "Everything is good, man," Davis said. "I'm making tremendous strides, tremendous progress. I'm on schedule to go, we're going into OTAs next week. There's no limitation, I'm able to do everything."

Davis, one of Buffalo's bigger offseason signings, is expected to start at cornerback across from Tre'Davious White.

  • Bills' Vontae Davis: Still dealing with groin injury

Davis is still recovering from his groin injury despite being medically cleared, Chris Brown of the Bills' official site reports.

Davis battled through injury for much of last season, which eventually lead to his release by the Colts midway through the year. He received full medical clearance a few weeks ago but isn't quite back to 100 percent yet. It isn't expected that he'll be limited much, if at all, when the Bills' offseason program begins.

  • Bills' Vontae Davis: Signing with Buffalo

Davis agree to a one-year contract with the Bills on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Coming off back-to-back injury-shortened seasons, Davis has since fully recovered from November surgery to repair a core-muscle injury. The Colts parted ways with the veteran midseason after finding limited interest via trade, but the 29-year-old drew plenty of interest from teams once the season ended and his health was no longer a concern. Davis ultimately chose to join an up-and-coming Bills secondary that already features 2017 second-team All-Pro safety Micah Hyde and rookie Tre'Davious White, who graded out as Pro Football Focus' second-best cornerback in 2018. Look for Davis to start opposite White during the upcoming season, a role that should result in Davis seeing more targets, and thus, more tackle opportunities. It still likely won't be enough to make Davis an appealing commodity in IDP settings, given that he's never posted more than 51 tackles or four interceptions in any campaign.

  • Vontae Davis: Medically cleared of injury

Davis (groin) received full medical clearance Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

After dealing with a core-muscle injury that ultimately caused him to undergo season-ending surgery last November, Davis was released by the Colts. Three months later, the cornerback is now back to full strength and will have the opportunity to sign with any team once free agency opens in March. The 29-year-old's performance took a notable step back while he battled through injury last season, but a healthy Davis could generate interest around the league for teams in need of veteran depth in the secondary.

  • Colts' Vontae Davis: Will have season-ending surgery

Davis will undergo season-ending surgery on his groin, Stephen Holder of The Indianapolis Star reports.

This injury has been lingering with Davis for months, and although he has suited up for five games this season, it's obvious this ailment took a turn for the worst. The ninth-year pro likely will be placed on injured reserve, and since he'll become a free agent after this season, there's no guarantee he returns to Indianapolis when he's healthy. Pierre Desir will take over as a starter in Davis' absence.

  • Colts' Vontae Davis: Released by Indianapolis

The Colts released Davis (groin) on Thursday.

Davis had been playing through the groin injury for most of the season, which probably contributed to his downturn in performance and limited interest from potential suitors prior to last week's trade deadline. The veteran cornerback didn't travel with the Colts to Houston ahead of last week's win over the Texans, and head coach Chuck Pagano had already ruled Davis out for the Week 10 matchup with the Steelers before it was announced Wednesday that the 29-year-old would require season-ending surgery. Since Davis is bound for free agency in March, the Colts elected to part ways with him entirely rather than stashing him on injured reserve. Pierre Desir will presumably start at cornerback for the rest of the season in Davis' absence.
