  • Rodney Smith: Returns to Seattle

Smith has signed a contract with the Seahawks, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.

Smith, who'd signed a contract with the Seahawks in January, was given the axe during the opening days of training camp. Now he'll get another chance to earn a depth role ahead of the regular season.

  • Rodney Smith: Released by Seattle

Smith was released by the Seahawks on Thursday, Curtis Crabtree of Sports Radio 950 KJR reports.

Smith's release is far from shocking. The wideout hasn't played since 2014 and was buried on the Seahawks' depth chart. He'll look to catch on with another team.

  • Seahawks' Rodney Smith: Signs with Seahawks

Smith signed a reserve/future contract with the Seahawks on Thursday, Curtis Crabtree of the Associated Press reports.

Smith hasn't played in a game since 2014, failing to make an active roster the past two seasons. He'll look to carve out a role on special teams and at the bottom of the receiver depth chart in Seattle in 2017.

  • Cowboys' Rodney Smith: Snags touchdown in preseason loss

Smith secured three of four targets for 32 yards and a touchdown in Thursday's 27-17 preseason loss to the Seahawks.

The third-year FSU product hauled in a tough six-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter from the arm of Jameill Showers, capping a six-play, 74-yard drive. After only tallying one catch in his first two preseason games, Thursday's production was pivotal in Smith's case for a final roster spot. However, with zero regular-season receptions in his first two seasons and strong competition for the remaining receiver jobs, Smith appears to face an uphill battle to survive final cuts heading into the final exhibition contest.
