  • Dezmin Lewis: Let go by Bills

Lewis was released Friday by the Bills, Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post reports.

Lewis was a 2015 seventh-round pick who stuck with the team for a bit and finished the preseason with four catches for 22 yards and one touchdown. However, he was buried on the team's depth chart after some new additions and was always seen as a long shot to make the final cut.

  • Bills' Dezmin Lewis: Tuesday promotion

Lewis was brought up from the practice squad Tuesday.

Lewis was thought to have a good chance at the No. 3 receiver role this summer, but his progress plateaued, and he didn't even make the team. He's tall and athletic, but the Bills found one of those guys elsewhere in Justin Hunter, so Lewis will serve as depth for an injury-depleted receiving corps, at least until he can turn some heads again.

  • Dezmin Lewis: Gets passed over

Lewis was passed over when the Bills selected receiver Ed Eagan from the practice squad this week as the team deals with an assortment of injuries to the receiving corps.

At one point, Lewis looked like he had the inside angle for the No. 3 job coming out of training camp -- which would have likely led to the current No. 1 spot given all the injuries that have since transpired -- but he stopped progressing and has been bypassed by a whole slew of other wideouts since. The team has always liked Lewis' size/speed combo and only has Justin Hunter to fill that role, but if Lewis doesn't start impressing the coaching staff soon he's going to be looking for work with another team.

  • Dezmin Lewis: Signed to Bills' practice squad

Lewis was signed to the practice squad Sunday, BuffaloBills.com reports.

We imagine the Bills were pretty happy that no one else picked up the upside wideout, as now they can continue working with him. The team only kept five receivers and numbers 3-4-5 aren't anything great to speak of, so if Lewis shines in practices there's a chance he could see regular season action at some point, especially if the Bills decide they need more size at wideout.

  • Dezmin Lewis: Can't make the grade

Lewis was cut Friday, BuffaloBills.com reports.

Lewis was really making an impression with the coaching staff earlier this summer, but then stopped progressing, to the point where coach Rex Ryan chose Marquise Goodwin, Greg Salas, and Walter Powell - none of whom offers Lewis' size and athleticism - for the last three receiving spots.

  • Bills' Dezmin Lewis: Not taking the next step yet

Coach Rex Ryan is looking for more out of Lewis, BuffaloBills.com reports. "I haven't seen that big of an improvement from him," said Ryan. "He'll get some opportunities and he's got to stand up if he wants to make this team. He's got to earn it, nobody's going to give you anything. I love having a big-size guy that should be a red-zone threat but eventually you got to come down with some plays."

The No. 3 and No. 4 receiver spots remain wide open, but if Lewis - who took some major strides in the spring and early summer - doesn't prove to someone soon that his upside is worth putting on the field, the Bills would be more likely to give those spots to the veterans in camp such as Greg Salas, Greg Little, or Marquise Goodwin. The last two preseason games loom large as far as Lewis' status for Week 1.

  • Bills' Dezmin Lewis: Back in action

Lewis returned to practice Wednesday after missing almost a week due to a shoulder injury, BuffaloBills.com reports.

Both Lewis and Aaron Williams were sidelined after a nasty collision in practice, but Lewis appears to be ready for action again and should play in Saturday's preseason game, where he'll try to make up for lost time and make his case for the open third or fourth receiving spot.

  • Bills' Dezmin Lewis: Shoulder contusion

Lewis' injury suffered in last week's collision with Aaron Williams has been officially determined to be a shoulder contusion, and he's listed as day-to-day, ESPN's Mike Rodak reports.

That's a lot less scary than a head injury, which is what Williams is dealing with right now. If Lewis can return to action quickly, he still has a shot at the No. 3 or No. 4 receiving role, jobs that are still completely up for grabs.

  • Bills' Dezmin Lewis: Still not practicing

Lewis, who was involved in a nasty helmet-to-helmet collision with teammate Aaron Williams last Thursday during practice, is not practicing Monday Joe Buscaglia of WKBW reports.

Lewis missed Saturday's preseason game as well. It was thought he had a good shot at the No. 3 receiving role, but he's still green and others like Marquise Goodwin and Greg Salas seem to have an equal shot at that role. Lewis' injury won't help, though getting back out there for the second preseason game still gives him a fighting chance.

  • Bills' Dezmin Lewis: Won't play Saturday

Lewis (head) won't take the field for Saturday's preseason game versus the Colts, Mike Rodak of ESPN.com reports.

Lewis was visibly woozy on his walk to the locker room in the aftermath of a helmet-to-helmet collision with safety Aaron Williams at Thursday's practice. The Bills have yet to clarify the nature of the injury, but Lewis' next practice appearance may be at the behest of the concussion protocol.

  • Bills' Dezmin Lewis: Nasty collision Thursday

Lewis left practice early Thursday and was taken in for general evaluation after a helmet-to-helmet collision with safety Aaron Williams, BuffaloBills.com reports.

The collision was a scary one, with many teammates sitting in silence with one knee on the ground. It initially appears that Lewis may have taken the lesser portion of the collision, though we'll find out more on both players over the weekend.

  • Bills' Dezmin Lewis: Listed with third grouping

The Bills have released their first depth chart and Lewis is listed with the third group of receivers along with Greg Little.

That puts the athletic Lewis no better than fifth on the depth chart, though perhaps the race for the No. 3 spot behind Sammy Watkins and Robert Woods is still a dead heat and the Bills are just listing veterans like Marquise Goodwin and Greg Salas ahead of the youngster. Time will tell in the preseason where Lewis stacks up, though on the bright side it looks like he'll have a home on the final roster.

  • Bills' Dezmin Lewis: Making his mark

In the absence of Sammy Watkins, Lewis ran with the first-teamers during the opening of Saturday's camp, WGR550.com reports.

There are a whole host of veteran options in camp, but the young Lewis has made a good impression on the staff going back to last season and the team may want to work his size (6-4, 220) into the offense. Lewis is a serious consideration for the No. 3 spot when the Bills open the season.

  • Bills' Dezmin Lewis: Turning some heads

Lewis, who's seen some time with the first team during OTA practices while Sammy Watkins recovers from foot surgery, has made a good impression on the coaching staff, The Buffalo News reports. "I think he has taken a big leap forward," coach Rex Ryan said. "He needed to. I think when he came out here initially he was real raw, but he got better and better as the year went on, and we're really encouraged with him right now.

The Bills have a slew of receivers jockeying for a role as high as No. 3 in the pecking order, with none of them having a real leg up on anyone else. Lewis may not be quite there yet, but at 6-4 and 214 pounds and a whole host of athleticism, he offers something the coaching staff has been looking for. We'll see how he does as things get more serious this summer.

  • Bills' Dezmin Lewis: Opportunity in store?

Lewis was elevated from the practice squad this week, BuffaloBills.com reports, and could see some action this week against the Cowboys. "Probably a good chance of that," said coach Rex Ryan. "The young man's done a nice job on our practice squad so I think that would be a real possibility."

Lewis provided some excitement in training camp, and while it's too early to throw a dart at him, the Bills simply don't have any no-brainer long-term talents once you get past Sammy Watkins. It's at least worth seeing what type of playing time he gets this week, and there's room for him to see some action with Robert Woods getting placed on IR.
