A third-round pick of the Broncos in 2017, Henderson spent his entire rookie season on IR due to a torn thumb ligament. After the campaign, he was arrested Jan. 14 for possession of a controlled substance, which incurred a one-game suspension from the NFL. Hurting his cause further was failing to report to Denver until Aug. 21. The wideout may have to prove that his personal life is in order before he receives another opportunity in the league.

The 2017 third-round pick is in a precarious spot after missing his entire rookie season with a torn thumb ligament. A January arrest for possession of a controlled substance led to a one-game suspension, and he missed all of training camp while stepping away from the team to deal with personal/family issues. In between, Henderson was limited by a hamstring injury during the offseason program, prompting coach Vance Joseph to say that the second-year wideout needed to earn his roster spot. Henderson has probably made a full recovery from the hamstring injury by now, but he's still on the reserve/exempt list and may not have a place with the Broncos anymore. He said Tuesday that he's working on gaining clearance to practice with the team.

Rookies Courtland Sutton and DaeSean Hamilton worked with starting quarterback Case Keenum during the session, along with 2017 fifth-round pick Isaiah McKenzie. Henderson missed his entire rookie season with a thumb injury, so he should be expected to be a little behind the curve. It'd also be somewhat surprising to see Denver cut a player as talented in the open field as Henderson without seeing him in regular-season play. That said, Henderson, McKenzie and Jordan Taylor are likely competing for just one or two roster spots. If Henderson doesn't make moves this summer, his job could be in jeopardy. Look for his abilities as a returner to be a factor.

Broncos' Carlos Henderson: Faces fight for targets, roster spot?
Henderson's (thumb) roster spot might be in jeopardy after Denver's draft additions of Courtland Sutton and DaeSean Hamilton, according to Troy Renck of Denver 7 ABC.
The Broncos made it clear during the draft that increased depth and production from the wide receiver spot was necessary in helping quarterback Case Keenum relive his Minnesota magic. The question is whom this pushes out, though upon close review, it seems unlikely to be Henderson, a 2017 third-round pick who missed all of his rookie season to a thumb injury. Though he struggled in camp, Henderson led the nation in receiving touchdowns in 2016 and is a skilled returner. It would seem foolhardy to discard a player like that without ever seeing him on the field. The likelier scenario: Henderson may have to fight for complementary targets while Sutton and Hamilton help replace the departed Bennie Fowler and Cody Latimer. This would push 2017 fifth-round pick Isaiah McKenzie and Jordan Taylor in 2018 while Sutton and Hamilton are potentially groomed to take Demaryius Thomas' and Emmanuel Sanders' jobs in 2019 or 2020.

With Cody Latimer, Bennie Fowler and Jordan Taylor all uncertain to be back with the team, Henderson may end up competing with rookies and/or offseason additions for the No. 3 job. Of course, the Broncos will need to land a major upgrade at quarterback if said role is going to have much relevance in the fantasy world. Moreover, a suspension stemming from his aforementioned legal troubles could negatively impact Henderson's bid for the job.

Henderson (thumb) didn't play during Saturday's preseason victory over the 49ers.
Henderson is still recovering from surgery earlier this month to address a torn ligament in his thumb, and given that he has yet to return to practice, it's possible that he could miss the Broncos' final two preseason tilts. The Broncos are deep at receiver and Henderson was struggling to fit into the offense even when he was healthy earlier in camp, so the third-round pick isn't a safe bet to make a meaningful impact as a rookie. With Cody Latimer and Kalif Raymond also viable options to return kicks for the Broncos, the team doesn't seem likely to rush Henderson back before he's 100 percent healthy.
