  • Tommy Stevens: Heading to CFL

Stevens announced via Twitter that he signed a CFL contract with the Calgary Stampeders on Tuesday.

The former quarterback-turned-tight end was drafted by the Saints in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft and was expected to fill a Taysom Hill-type role. However, the 6-foot-5 hybrid player was never able to reach his potential and bounced between the Saints, Panthers and Giants' organizations during his two years in the NFL. It's unclear what position he will play for the Stampeders.

  • Tommy Stevens: Cut by Giants

The Giants cut Stevens on Tuesday, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.

Stevens linked with the Giants on August 4, but now that Rysen John has been cleared to return from the reserve/COVID-19 list, the team needed to free up a roster spot. The second-year tight end will search for a depth role elsewhere.

  • Giants' Tommy Stevens: Signs with Giants

Stevens signed a contract with the Giants on Wednesday, Michael Elsen of the team's official site reports.

  • Tommy Stevens: Let go by Carolina

The Panthers waived Stevens on Tuesday, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.

The 24-year-old was promoted from the practice squad ahead of Week 17 and had four carries for 24 yards during his NFL debut against the Saints, filling a Taysom Hill-like role. Stevens, a seventh-round pick of the Saints last April, is once again in search of a new team ahead of training camp.

  • Panthers' Tommy Stevens: Ends rookie season

Stevens played one game as a rookie, rushing four times for 24 yards in Week 17's loss to the Saints.

Stevens was actually drafted by New Orleans in the seventh round last year, but he landed on Carolina's practice squad in mid-November. The 6-foot-5, 235-pounder played quarterback in college but has been groomed for a utility role in the NFL, hence his backfield cameo (four carries, 24 yards) in the Panthers' season finale. Given his unique skill set, it'll be intriguing to see whether the team opts to bring Stevens back for the 2021 campaign.

  • Panthers' Tommy Stevens: Promoted from practice squad

The Panthers signed Stevens to the active roster Saturday, Alaina Getzenberg of The Charlotte Observer reports.

Stevens is set to make his NFL debut in Sunday's matchup against the Saints, who selected him in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft. While Stevens is officially listed as a tight end, he played some quarterback in college, and the Saints drafted him for Taysom Hill-like purposes. It's unclear exactly how he'll be utilized in Week 17, but it wouldn't be surprising to see Stevens utilized in a gadget role.

  • Tommy Stevens: Signs in Carolina

The Panthers signed Stevens to the practice squad Monday.

This transaction was made in response to Monday's news that Teddy Bridgewater suffered an MCL sprain in this past Sunday's loss to Tampa Bay. If Bridgewater is forced to miss any time, P.J. Walker is expected to start under center while Will Grier serves as the backup. Stevens will be kept around in case of an emergency.

Stevens was released from New Orleans' practice squad Tuesday, per the NFL's official transaction log.

The 23-year-old failed to make the Saints' season-opening roster and remained with the organization on the practice squad, but he's now been let go. Stevens was a seventh-round pick during the 2020 draft out of Mississippi State.

  • Tommy Stevens: Earns practice squad spot

Stevens cleared waivers Sunday and signed with the Saints' practice squad, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.

The rookie seventh-rounder is considered a run-blocking tight end after catching just 14 passes over four seasons at Mississippi State. While he was unable to secure a roster spot, he could get promoted to the active roster if either Jared Cook, Josh Hill or Adam Trautman is unavailable.

  • Tommy Stevens: Waived by Saints

Stevens was waived by the Saints on Saturday, Amie Just of Nola.com reports.

The former quarterback-turned-tight end looked like he'd have a good shot of making the final roster due to his unique skillset, but that wasn't the case. Before joining the Saints, he drew some interest from Carolina.

  • Saints' Tommy Stevens: Playing tight end

Stevens is wearing No. 85 at practice and is listed as a tight end on the Saints' roster, Luke Johnson of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.

Listed at 6-foot-5, 235, the rookie seventh-round pick is about 15 pounds away from matching the NFL tight end size prototype, and he ran a 4.49-second 40-yard dash at his pro day back in March. Stevens posted a 59.9 completion percentage and 7.2 YPA on 202 pass attempts throughout this college career, but he took 159 carries for 887 yards (5.6 YPC) and 12 TDs, adding 14-62-2 as a pass catcher. The Saints may be grooming Stevens as a replacement for Taysom Hill, who is expected to spend more time focusing on the QB position in preparation for Drew Brees eventually retiring.

  • Saints' Tommy Stevens: May fill Taysom Hill-like role

Saints coach Sean Payton suggested after the 2020 NFL Draft that he anticipates Stevens handling a versatile role in the vein of Taysom Hill, Jeff Duncan of The Athletic reports. "We know the [Hill] role. We invented the role. There's no way I was going to lose this kid," Payton said of the seventh-round pick from Mississippi State.

During their draft prep, the Saints identified the 6-foot-5, 237-pound quarterback as a priority signing in the likely event he went undrafted. However, with Payton receiving word from Stevens' agent that the signal-caller was committed to signing with Carolina as a UDFA, the Saints traded back into the draft to ensure they got their guy. Stevens' underwhelming passing efficiency between stops at Penn State and Mississippi State (59.9 percent completion rate, 7.2 yards per attempt) was the primary reason why most outlets projected him to go undrafted, but his combination of size and athleticism was too tempting for New Orleans to pass up. Like Hill, Stevens will likely be listed as a quarterback on the roster, but expect the Saints to experiment with the 23-year-old out of the backfield, at receiver and potentially on special teams during training camp and the preseason.
