The Cowboys waived Toney (groin) with an injury settlement Thursday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

  • Cowboys' Shaka Toney: Reverts to IR

Toney (groin) reverted to the Cowboys' injured reserve Thursday after going unclaimed on waivers, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

The defensive end will need to reach an injury settlement with the team to have a chance to play in 2024. Toney last saw NFL action in 2022 with Washington, when he played on 50 defensive snaps and 313 special-teams snaps, recording eight tackles.

  • Shaka Toney: Waived/injured by Dallas

The Cowboys waived/injured Toney (groin) on Wednesday, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.

Toney signed with Dallas in early August due to Sam Williams sustaining a season-ending torn ACL injury. Toney registered two tackles (one solo) across 22 snaps in Sunday's preseason game against the Rams, but at some point he injured his groin. If he clears waivers, the 2021 seventh-rounder will revert to Dallas' injured reserve, which would force him to miss the entire 2024 season unless an injury settlement is reached.

  • Cowboys' Shaka Toney: Catches on with Dallas

The Cowboys signed Toney to their 90-man training camp roster Friday, per the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Toney worked out with the Cowboys on Thursday in the wake of Sam Williams tearing his ACL at practice Sunday. Toney last appeared in the NFL in 2022 with the Commanders, and across 16 regular-season games he posted eight tackles (four solo) while mostly playing on special teams. The 2021 seventh-round pick out of Penn State will look to make the most of his opportunity and compete for a defensive end depth spot behind starters Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence, although his biggest contribution could come on special teams.

Toney will work out with the Cowboys on Thursday, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.

Toney will get a shot to prove himself to the Cowboys after being let go by the Commanders in April. With Sam Williams (knee) done for the year with a torn ACL, Dallas is in need of another option on the defensive line. Toney last appeared in an NFL contest in 2022, recording eight tackles (four solo) over 16 games with Washington. He spent the entirety of the 2023 campaign at home after being suspended for the year for violating the league's policy on gambling.
