Even though he hadn't appeared in playoff game since the first week of May, Philadelphia Flyers forward Claude Giroux still entered Friday night as the NHL's leading scorer this postseason with 17 points in only 10 games. It was an impressive run while it lasted, but somebody was finally able to knock Giroux out of the top spot.
Thanks to a two-point effort in the Devils 3-2 series-clinching win on Friday, Ilya Kovalchuk jumped over Giroux and took over the playoff scoring lead for himself with 18 points.
Giroux, along with his teammate Danny Briere, still has the playoff goal-scoring lead with eight.
It's again worth repeating that the Flyers haven't played a game in three weeks.
If nothing else it just helps to show how incredible the Philadelphia offense was for a brief stretch during the playoffs.
His 1.70 point-per-game mark is one of the highest ones we've seen in recent years, and the only players that have topped it going as far back as 1997 are Patrik Elias (1.78 in 2006) and Doug Weight (1.86 in 2003).
