The Columbus Blue Jackets signed forward Derek Dorsett to a three-year contract extension on Wednesday, keeping him from hitting the restricted free agent market this summer.
The team did not release the financial terms of the contract, but his last deal carried a cap hit of just over $562,000.
The 25-year-old forward is coming off a career year with the Blue Jackets, scoring 12 goals to go with eight assists in 77 games. He also led the NHL with 235 penalty minutes, mostly due to his willingness to fight. He dropped the gloves 19 times this past season, and he appears to be completely fearless and always ready to go up against the NHL's top heavyweights.
Take, for example, the time earlier this year he thought it would be a good idea to fight John Scott of the Chicago Blackhawks, a moment that produced one of the most absurd highlights of the entire season.
Truthfully, nobody should ever fight John Scott because he is capable of crushing everybody.
But if Dorsett is willing to go after him, who won't he challenge?
That's the type of hockey and energy that you get with Dorsett, and it's probably one of the reasons Columbus wanted to keep him around for another three years.
