Flyers forward Brayden Schenn is the first player of the season to feel the wrath of Brendan Shanahan. The NHL's discipline czar meted out a one-game suspension on Schenn for his hit Tuesday night on Devils forward Anton Volchenkov.
While there was no penalty on the play during the game, Shanahan showed last season that won't always deter him since all plays are under review from the league. In this case, he reviewed it and thought it warranted a one-game ban for charging.
Here was Shanahan's description of the play in question:
"As the video shows, having come onto the ice on a line change, Schenn skates down the boards directly toward Volchenkov. Rather than delivering a legal body check, Schenn jumps up off the ice prior to contact and into Volchenkov, making contact with Volchenkov's head."
First off, I must say it's weird how great it is to hear "As the video shows" from Shanahan's monotone voice once again. Man, I missed the NHL.
But on topic, Shanahan is able to freeze the hit just before and at impact. You can see Schenn lifted off the ice. It was certainly close, and many are surprised by the one-game suspension. But if Shanahan plans on enforcing this tightly, then I have no problem with it. It's when the hits and suspensions don't seem to be consistent that people start to bicker.
As uaual, Shanahan considered that there was no history of discipline for Schenn and Volchenkov wasn't injured on the play. Thus, it's just a one-game suspension.
The Shanabans are back.
