There is still no love lost between the Buffalo Sabres and Boston Bruins as we saw on Thursday night during -- and after -- Buffalo's 7-4 win.
Bruins forward Brad Marchand had some strong words for longtime Sabres coach Lindy Ruff, saying he was "disrespectful" for calling a timeout with 13 seconds remaining in a game that was already all but decided.
"Yeah, Ruff wants to be a big shot, and that’s not the best play to do," said Marchand, via Mike Cole of NESN. "That’s pretty disrespectful. If he wants to be like that, that’s fine. We just have to move on."
Ruff said he didn't like the fact he had his skill guys (Jason Pominville, Thomas Vanek and Jochen Hecht) on the ice against Boston's Lane MacDermid and decided to call the timeout so he could send his own tough guy, John Scott, out on to the ice to essentially keep the peace.
There was no fight or incident as time expired.
Said Bruins coach Claude Julien on the timeout, again via NESN: "I don’t know. I don’t know why he took it. I really don’t know. He’s entitled to it, so you just play along with it. He might have thought something was gonna happen, which wasn’t. But that’s probably for him to answer. I don’t know.”
Scott only played four minutes over eight shifts on Thursday night but was at the center of a lot of action. He was not only the player sent over the boards after Ruff's "disrepectful" timeout, but he also had a throwdown with Bruins tough guy Shawn Thornton, which is shown in the video at the top of the page.
Thornton had to leave the game and did not return.
Scott said after the game he was concerned he didn't see Thornton return to the bench and was asking Buffalo's trainers if they heard an update on his status.
Julien said Thornton will be evaluated again Friday and the team will know more.
