The Edmonton Oilers are never boring. Not anymore.
On Wednesday night, they defeated the Phoenix Coyotes in overtime thanks to a game-winner from rookie sensation Nail Yakupov. And as always seems to be the case when Yakupov is involved, all hell managed to break loose.
Yakupov knocked a loose puck past Coyotes goalie Chad Johnson for the winner. During the celebration, Phoenix defenseman Derek Morris had an issue with Oilers defenseman Ryan Whitney.
So he tried to fight him. Or punch him. Or something.
Immediately after the puck went in, you can see Morris turn to the referee and make a hand gesture, apparently claiming that the puck went to Yakupov by way of a hand pass -- which would have negated the goal.
This is what happened after that.
There was so much focus given to the celebration (and, really, that was nothing compared to what we've seen from Yakupov previously) that it overlooked the fact that this skirmish appeared to be all about Morris and Whitney and had nothing to do with Yakupov.
Just before Morris threw his punch at Whitney, it appeared Whitney said something that Morris did not appreciate. And it was on.
Next up for Morris: Waiting for a potential phone call from the NHL offices.
