Coyotes land Carl Soderberg; Avs after Artemi Panarin
Fresh off the best season of his NHL career, Carl Soderberg has been shipped south in a deal that saves the Colorado Avalanche the $4.75 million left on his five-year contract, as reported by TSN, with the Arizona Coyotes landing the potential second-line center for the cost of defenseman Kevin Connauton and a 2020 third-round draft pick.
The move could pave the way for the Avs to intensify pursuit of Artemi Panarin, whose agent reportedly met with the team on Sunday, especially now that Colorado has close to $40 million in cap space. Arizona, meanwhile, figures to benefit from the deal by adding an established scorer in Soderberg, who had a career-high 23 goals in 82 games in 2018-19. The year prior, he had 16 goals after opening his career with stints in Sweden and with the Boston Bruins.
Joe Pavelski may visit Stars, Lightning
It's no secret the San Jose Sharks are strapped for cap space after locking up Erik Karlsson for big bucks, and their own captain, Joe Pavelski, is well aware he might not find the money he's looking for at home. In a recent notebook for The Athletic, NHL insider Pierre LeBrun suggested the 34-year-old All-Star may visit the Dallas Stars and Tampa Bay Lightning this week. Pavelski himself confirmed to LeBrun he intends to visit "a few teams" but did not rule out a return to San Jose.
A separate report from The Athletic's Craig Morgan indicates Pavelski's agent, Dan Plante, has also already met with the Arizona Coyotes. Morgan said it's believed Pavelski ultimately wants to remain with the Sharks and did not speculate whether the longtime San Jose veteran has "real" interest in the Coyotes. But until the Sharks find ways to clear money, all options are on the table.
Sharks could be looking to trade Brenden Dillon
In the wake of their Erik Karlsson spending spree, the San Jose Sharks might not be done dealing in order to save salary cap space. According to The Athletic's Kevin Kurz, veteran defenseman Brenden Dillon is a potential casualty of the team pursuing a new deal for captain Joe Pavelski, with his $3.27 million 2019-20 cap hit reportedly on the block.
As NBC Sports noted, Dillon is an established presence alongside Karlsson, Brent Burns and Marc-Eduouard Vlasic, but the Sharks could justify a move by depending more on the up-and-coming Radim Simke.
Panthers meeting with Artemi Panarin, Sergei Bobrovsky
With a big name behind the bench after adding Joel Quenneville, the Florida Panthers are apparently eager to add big names on the ice as well. According to TSN's Bob McKenzie, both Artemi Panarin and Sergei Bobrovsky are meeting with the team on Monday, a day after the start of the NHL's free agency speaking period.
Bobrovsky has been linked to Florida before, what with longtime goalie Roberto Luongo expected on his way out. Panarin, meanwhile, would be a potentially prominent upgrade at forward, not to mention one of Quenneville's former Blackhawks standouts. Goalie remains Florida's No. 1 priority, per McKenzie, even after the Panthers added to that position with their first-round pick in the draft.
