Sergei Kostitsyn is spending the lockout with Avangard Omsk in the KHL. (US Presswire) |
Every player wants the lockout to end and for NHL hockey to resume. That's what they've all been saying, right? Wrong. There is at least one NHLer who is in no rush to get back to the NHL.
Sergei Kostitsyn, who has seemed to find a good landing spot with the Nashville Predators, isn't thrilled with the prospect of the lockout ending anytime soon. No really, he's not. Check out what he told Reuters (via the Globe and Mail):
"Let's put it this way -- it would be better [for the players] if the lockout continues," Kostitsyn was quoted as saying by Russian daily Sport-Express on Monday.
"Players want a definite answer. If the NHL season is lost -- let it be that way. I would then play in Russia for the whole season."
Well then, that's certainly an odd take on things. I doubt there are many players who would agree with his assessment that it's better for the players if it continues. Maybe it's better for him, but the players as a whole? I really doubt that one, particularly the grinders who don't make millions. Perhaps this was just lost in translation a bit; I hope so.
Considering the Predators are due to pay Kostitsyn a total of $6 million over the next two years, you'd think he'd be plenty interested in putting on the mustard yellow of the Preds again.
Then again, Kostitsyn has never quite meshed with the NHL and North America. He was sent out of Montreal after being suspended a few times (he didn't report to AHL Hamilton) and his older, more-infamous brother Andrei was suspended for a postseason game along with Alexander Radulov for missing the team's curfew in Phoenix this past season.
The Kostitsyns (who are from Belarus) and the NHL just don't mix well. Those aren't my words; that's coming from Sergei (OK, it is paraphrasing a little).
"I couldn't get used to [American] mentality. They are totally different people from us."
After the season Andrei Kostitsyn didn't sign a contract in the NHL. He elected to go to the KHL where he signed with Traktor Chelyabinsk. Based on Sergei's comments, will anybody be surprised if he does the same thing in two years when he's an unrestricted free agent? I won't be.
Kostitsyn seemed to be getting along pretty well in Nashville. Over the past two seasons, he had 40 goals and 93 points in 152 games. However, he seems to be enjoying his time with Avangard Omsk during the lockout and is in no rush for the NHL to return. It seems like he wouldn't mind if the next two seasons were wiped out and his contract with the Preds would expire.
I guess the NHL isn't for every hockey player.
