Tomas Vokoun was brought to the Washington Capitals this offseason to be the goaltender that finally gets them over the hump, a cheap but pretty proven veteran who would hopefully be the answer to their goaltending problems that otherwise hindered a Cup contender in recent seasons.

Well chalk this up as something that didn't go as planned.

Vokoun hasn't been particularly great this season, although not bad. But his time playing for the Capitals this season looks to be done so if somebody is going to get them over the hump from the goaltending position, it won't be Vokoun.

That's because he suffered another groin injury early in Washington's recent 3-2 win in Boston, one that is going to likely end his season, playoffs included, according to Chuck Gormley of CSN Washington.

Vokoun re-injured his groin in the first period of the Capitals’ win in Boston when an opposing forward kicked out his skate while Vokoun was prone in his crease. The play occurred prior to Jason Chimera’s 5-minute charging major with 6 minutes remaining and Vokoun did not want to remove himself from the game and force backup Michal Neuvirth into coming in cold on a 5-minute penalty kill.

But after making a routine save late with 1:35 left in the period and 35 seconds remaining on the penalty to Chimera, Vokoun pulled himself from the game and did not return.

With Vokoun sidelined, the Caps will turn to 24-year-old Michal Neuvirth, who stopped 39 of 41 shots and both shootout attempts in Saturday night’s 3-2 win over Montreal.

As you can probably imagine, a groin injury is sort of detrimental to the job of butterfly goaltender. It's pretty inhibiting for any player, but particularly a goalie.

Before the season I was ready to peg the signing of Vokoun as the best in the offseason by any team. The Capitals were getting what I believed was a solid and overlooked goalie who could help them reach another level. Oh, and for an incredibly cheap price too thanks to a vanishing market for him on July 1.

Instead it looks like it's going to have to be the tandem of Neuvirth and Braden Holtby , the same duo the Caps tried to ride late last season, if Washington is even going to make the playoffs before we can ask how far will they go.
