Either the doctors got something horribly wrong or Todd Bertuzzi has a very, very good medicine man. It turns out that the Detroit Red Wings forward does not have mononucleosis after all.
It was previously believed that Bertuzzi would be lost for weeks with the sometimes debilitating and highly contagious illness, but a new diagnosis gave the big bruiser a clean bill of health.
As a result, Bertuzzi will be available for Detroit's Tuesday night home opener against the Dallas Stars.
"The tests must have reacted to something going way back,” Red Wings GM Ken Holland told the Detroit Free Press. “He can play tomorrow if Mike Babcock wants him to, and he feels he's able."
Bertuzzi now knows the horror of many a college freshman getting a faulty diagnosis from the medical experts over at the campus health office.
With the Red Wings coming off of getting run over in the season-opener against St. Louis, Bertuzzi’s size and offensive prowess will be a welcome addition to the lineup.
