The Colorado Avalanche have scored a goal. Finally. The last team to get its first goal of the season ended its scoreless drought with a goal off the stick of Jamie McGinn early in the second period against the Boston Bruins. It ended a drought of 143:28 after the team was shut out by the Minnesota Wild in back-to-back games to start the season.
The Avs were actually pretty lucky this one snuck through. Bruins netminder Niklas Svedberg appeared square to the shot, but McGinn was able to sneak it through the backup goalie for a 1-0 lead. The Avs really needed that break.
The Avalanche are looking to bounce back from a pretty dreadful start to the year in which they were outscored 8-0 by Central Division foe Minnesota over the first two games. Meeting the Bruins in their annual Columbus Day afternoon game, their lead didn’t last long as Loui Eriksson tied the game 5:22 after McGinn's opening tally.
At least the Avs got the first one. It was looking pretty hairy there for a bit. They also are now sure to avoid co-occupying a dubious spot in NHL history.
According to @EliasSports only team in NHL history to be shut out in first 3 games of the season was 1930 Montreal Maroons

Now that would have really been embarassing.
