Washington Capitals defenseman John Carlson scored his first goal of the season Sunday against the Penguins ... while he was on his way to the bench.
Carlson was simply dumping the puck into the offensive zone so the Capitals could get a line change, but the puck had a different idea. On its way around the boards, it came across the stanchion and shot into the net from a crazy angle.
Where was goaltender Tomas Vokoun? He was already behind the net ready to play the puck for his defense. Whoops.
Vokoun played for the Capitals last season, so he knows -- or should know -- about how crazy the rink in Washington can get. As bad as this goal makes him look, it wasn't the worst he's given up in Verizon Center. Remember this one? Dustin Byfuglien probably does.
