It just won't stop for the Red Wings defense.
The group that is already so thin and injury-riddled that it signed Kent Huskins on Tuesday has lost another defenseman for at least a few weeks. Veteran, stable defenseman Ian White is now going to be out two-to-three weeks after having surgery for a leg laceration, according to Ansar Khan of MLive.
The cut came in Tuesday's 2-1 home-opener loss to the Dallas Stars. According to Andy Strickland of True Hockey, the injury was gruesome, with the cut going through his leg to the muscle.
When it rains it pours. My goodness.
To recap what's going on with the Red Wings blue line, they lost Nicklas Lidstrom last offseason to retirement and Brad Stuart to the Sharks. Then they failed to sign Ryan Suter in free agency and eventually only added Carlo Colaiacovo. Then to start this season, Colaiacovo suffered a shoulder injury that will keep him out three-to-four weeks, Jonathan Ericsson has been dinged up and so has Jakub Kindl. At least there is one bit of good news news for Detroit: Kindl is expected back for the next game.
Wings fans, you might want to settle in for a long short season. The potential for the Wings to miss the playoffs for the first time in more than two decades already seemed high coming into the season, now that they can't keep anybody on the blue line healthy it's looking dangerously high.
Time to find a bubble for Nicklas Kronwall to live in.
If I didn't know any better I'd think GM Ken Holland made a deal with the devil a long time ago for all his team's success, and now it's coming due. The Wings just can't catch a break right now.
