Andrew MacDonald: Released from PTO
MacDonald was released from his PTO with the Flames on Tuesday.
MacDonald had been in competition for a third-pairing role with the Flames in training camp. Instead, the team will run with Oliver Kylington, Rasmus Andersson and Michael Stone as their bottom three defensemen. MacDonald is now a free agent.

Flames' Andrew MacDonald: Inks PTO with Calgary
MacDonald will attend the Flames' training camp on a professional tryout agreement.
MacDonald appeared in 47 games with the Flyers last season, tallying nine assists while posting a minus-5 rating. Philadelphia put the 32-year-old on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract in June, but Calgary evidently believes he may still have something left in the tank. However, he should still be considered a longshot to land a spot on the Flames' Opening Night roster, and even if he's able to do so, MacDonald will have little to no fantasy value in 2019-20.

Andrew MacDonald: Lands on unconditional waivers
The Flyers placed MacDonald on unconditional waivers Saturday for the purpose of terminating his contract with the club.
MacDonald took the ice for just 47 games this season and tallied just nine points after posting 21 points over 66 contests in 2017-18. He was scheduled to remain under contract with the club for one more season, but it appears the veteran has been handed his walking papers early.

Flyers' Andrew MacDonald: Dresses for only 47 games
MacDonald didn't score a goal and recorded nine points with a minus-5 rating and 18 PIM in 47 games this season.
Three of those assists actually came in his final 14 games, but MacDonald still wasn't consistently in the Flyers' lineup, especially down the stretch. He played just five games after March 1. MacDonald has one year remaining on his contract, and with a lot of young defensemen in Philadelphia, it will be interesting to see how much he plays next season.

Flyers' Andrew MacDonald: Still sitting in press box
MacDonald has remained out of the lineup as a healthy scratch for the last two weeks.
The 32-year-old defenseman hasn't dressed for a game since March 19. With the Flyers eliminated from the playoffs, there isn't much motivation to re-insert MacDonald back into the lineup during this final week. More than likely, the Flyers will let their young defensemen gain more experience this final week. MacDonald has zero goals and nine points in 47 games this season.

Flyers' Andrew MacDonald: Sits as healthy scratch
MacDonald sat as a healthy scratch during the 3-1 victory against the Blackhawks on Thursday.
The Flyers elected to insert 22-year-old defenseman Philippe Myers back into the lineup. Philadelphia is clinging to its playoff hopes, so if at any point the Flyers coaching staff decides MacDonald is again the better option to help the team win that night, he could quickly return to the lineup. However, if the Flyers fall any further back in the race, it wouldn't at all be a surprise to see Philadelphia let the 22-year-old receive NHL playing time over the veteran MacDonald. The 32-year-old has no goals and nine assists in 47 games this season.

Flyers' Andrew MacDonald: Still searching for first goal
MacDonald has nine assists but hasn't scored a goal in 45 games this season.
In every one of his NHL seasons in which he's dressed for more than 50 games, MacDonald has scored at least twice. Still looking for that first goal of 2018-19, he'll need a pair to keep that streak alive if he plays another five games. Because of the lack of scoring, MacDonald has posted his worst points-per-game average since 2009-10. He also has a minus-5 rating, 18 PIM, 91 blocks and 28 hits this season.

Flyers' Andrew MacDonald: Not contributing much
MacDonald has no points and a minus-4 rating in the last six games.
The 32-year-old defenseman had a seven-block game on Feb. 17, but outside of that, he's not contributing much value anywhere. Unless owners need a block specialist -- he's averaging 2.0 blocks per game over the last five contests -- MacDonald can be safely left on the waiver wire. He has no goals and eight points with a minus-7 rating, 16 PIM, 36 shots and 27 hits in 43 games this season.

Flyers' Andrew MacDonald: Leads team in blocks
MacDonald failed to find the net on either of his two shots on goal but paced the Flyers with seven blocked shots across 16:12 of ice time Sunday in a 3-1 victory over the Red Wings.
MacDonald's activity on the defensive end helped atone for a terrible turnover in the first period that afforded the Wings' Anthony Mantha a clear shot on goal. Fortunately, Mantha couldn't capitalize, and MacDonald later saved the Flyers from letting in another goal by denying a Shane Larkin attempt with one of his blocks. With only eight points in 38 games this season, MacDonald has been a disappointment offensively, but his 81 blocks have at least made him a one-category standout.

Flyers' Andrew MacDonald: Remains goalless
MacDonald is still waiting for his first goal this season and has just one assist in the last 11 games.
The veteran defenseman has never been a prolific scorer, but after a decent stat line in 2017-18 -- six goals, 21 points and a plus-8 rating -- MacDonald has just six assists and a minus-2 rating in 32 games this season. He is on pace to surpass his totals in the hits and blocks categories, but MacDonald is also on track to play more games. If he misses any games down the stretch, he may struggle to beat any of his 2017-18 totals.

Flyers' Andrew MacDonald: Quiet in return to lineup
MacDonald recorded zero points, no shots and three blocks against Minnesota on Monday.
It was an uninspired return to the lineup for MacDonald, who has missed six games as a result of a lower-body injury. The defenseman is still looking for his first goal of the year and has just five helpers in 25 appearances, so fantasy owners probably shouldn't be banking on him to start lighting the lamp.

Flyers' Andrew MacDonald: Back in action against Wild
MacDonald (lower body) will rejoin the lineup versus Minnesota on Monday, Adam Kimelman of NHL.com reports.
MacDonald returns from a six-game stint in the press box. The blueliner is still looking for his first goal of the 2018-19 campaign and has recorded just five helpers in 24 contests. Given his lack of offensive contributions, the 32-year-old won't provide much in terms of fantasy value.

Flyers' Andrew MacDonald: Likely returning Monday
MacDonald (lower body) is expected to return to the lineup Monday versus the Wild, Sam Carchidi of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
MacDonald was paired up with Shayne Gostisbehere during Sunday's morning skate, which is a good sign that he'll make his return. The veteran blueliner was off to a slow start this season with just five assists in 24 games, and he has missed the last six contests due to this condition. MacDonald's return to the lineup will be preceded by an activation from injured reserve.

Flyers' Andrew MacDonald: Still toiling on IR
MacDonald (lower body) remains on injured reserve heading into Saturday's road game against the Devils, according to the NHL's official media site.
It appears that MacDonald will miss a sixth consecutive game. There haven't been any verified reports of the veteran defenseman returning to the ice for a practice or morning skate, and that's generally considered a prerequisite for an injured player getting the green light to return to game action.

Flyers' Andrew MacDonald: Still sidelined
MacDonald (lower body) is slated to miss Monday's clash with the Blues, per Adam Kimelman of NHL.com.
The Flyers were hoping to have MacDonald back on the ice Monday, but the team held an optional skate instead and the blueliner remains on injured reserve, per the NHL media site. Without the 32-year-old in the lineup, Robert Hagg and Christian Folin figure to round out Philadelphia's third pairing.

Flyers' Andrew MacDonald: Out next two games
MacDonald will miss the Flyers' next two games due to a lower-body injury.
Philadelphia is hoping MacDonald will be able to resume skating Monday, which doesn't exactly bode well for his availability for the evening's matchup with St. Louis. Nonetheless, another update on his status should surface prior to that contest.

Flyers' Andrew MacDonald: Sitting out Thursday
MacDonald will not play in Thursday's game against the Hurricanes due to injury.
MacDonald has displayed some offensive prowess in past seasons, racking up a career-high six goals to go along with 21 points in 66 games just a season ago. However, he owns just five assists through 24 tilts this year and has seen a career-low 18:01 average ice time with no power play action to speak of. The veteran will take a night off Thursday to heal up for a potential return to the pairings Saturday against the Flames.

Flyers' Andrew MacDonald: Records minus-2
MacDonald posted a minus-2 rating with a shot on goal and three blocks in a 4-3 loss to the Blue Jackets on Saturday.
The veteran defenseman took a step in the right direction with a plus-2 rating on Thursday, but that was essentially erased with his performance Saturday. MacDonald doesn't have a point in nine games, so owners need him to contribute in other categories to make him worth starting. Well, plus/minus isn't one of those categories -- he has a minus-5 rating in the last nine games. The only category MacDonald is consistently contributing positive things to is blocks.

Flyers' Andrew MacDonald: Back on the ice
MacDonald has three points and an even rating in the last five games.
The good news is the veteran defenseman is back in the lineup after sitting as a healthy scratch and producing. However, his three assists all came in one game, where he also posted a plus-3 rating. Since then, MacDonald has no points and a minus-3 rating. He has no goals and four points with a minus-3 rating in 13 games this season. Even though he didn't score much in 2017-18, that's a far cry from his production last season (six goals, 21 points and a plus-8 rating).

Flyers' Andrew MacDonald: Sitting in press box again
MacDonald has been a healthy scratch in each of the last three games.
The 32-year-old defenseman got a shot back in the lineup on Nov. 15 and 17, but he posted three shots and a minus-1 rating with no points. Since then, he's been back in the press box. MacDonald isn't useful in many fantasy leagues anyway, but he's particularly irrelevant this season since he's only played eight games.
