A mobile minute-munching defenseman in his heyday, Gilbert's NHL career included 198 points (45 goals, 178 assists) in 655 games.

Capitals' Tom Gilbert: Dealt to Washington
The Kings traded Gilbert to the Capitals on Wednesday for a conditional fifth-round draft pick in 2017, and he'll start out with AHL Hershey.
The low-end defenseman was waived by the Kings at the beginning of February, so it's a bit curious that the Caps didn't bid for his services at that time. At any rate, the 11th-year journeyman won't be taken seriously in the fantasy realm given that he's shaping up to be a minor-league depth option.

Gilbert was placed on waivers Wednesday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.
Gilbert has cracked the lineup a mere 18 times this season, including making just one appearance in the Kings' last 17 outings. The defender will likely be reassigned to AHL Ontario if he clears. Without any additional blue-line depth, Los Angeles will likely call up another player unless Matt Greene (undisclosed) is ready to be activated off IR.

Gilbert has served his three game suspension, and is eligible to return to the Kings' lineup for Thursday's game against the Canadiens, TSN 690's Amanda Stein reports.
Kings coach Darryl Sutter declined to confirm whether Gilbert would be in the lineup for Thursday's tilt, indicating the 33-year-old blueliner may end up being a healthy scratch for the contest. The 2002 fourth-round pick has been a solid contributor for the Kings this season, notching three assists in eight games while averaging 2:04 of ice time on the man advantage.

Kings' Tom Gilbert: Suspended three games
Gilbert was suspended by the league for three games on Thursday for boarding Nick Ritchie during a 4-0 loss to the Ducks on Tuesday night, Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press reports.
Gilbert launched himself at Ritchie's back and into the boards during Tueday's game, leading to a player safety hearing and the subsequent suspension. Gilbert's play has been passable for Los Angeles this year, as he's posted three assists in eight games while averaging 16:31 of ice time, so this is less of a blow to fantasy owners than it is to the Kings, whose defense has been reeling since the loss of Brayden McNabb (upper body). Gilbert will be eligible to return on November 10th in Montreal.

Kings' Tom Gilbert: Notches assist in overtime victory
Gilbert picked up an assist while skating 15:06 during Thursday's 4-3 overtime victory in Dallas.
A healthy scratch in the season's first two games, Gilbert's gotten in the lineup twice in a row now and has surprisingly picked up a pair of helpers while seeing big power-play minutes. It's hard to see that continuing, though, as the 33-year-old blueliner has enjoyed precious little time on the man advantage over the past couple seasons and generally offers little on the offensive end. Indeed, he's equaled last year's point total already -- Gilbert notched a goal and an assist over 45 games with Montreal in 2015-16.

Canadiens' Tom Gilbert: Out six months following surgery
Gilbert had surgery on his left knee Wednesday and is expected to need six months to recover.
The operation reportedly was performed by Dr. James Andrews, a renowned orthopedic surgeon in the sports world. Montreal was starting to rely more heavily on Gilbert, as he averaged 19:11 of ice time in nine February games -- more than a two-minute boost against his season average -- before sustaining the knee injury last Friday in a game against the Flyers. Greg Pateryn, who skated for 21:38 in the last game, could see the largest minutes boost on the blue line now that Gilbert is out of the picture.

It's unclear exactly what Gilbert is dealing with but he'll be limited to 45 outings during the 2015-16 season nonetheless.
