Drew Miller: Released from PTO
Chicago released Miller from his professional tryout agreement Thursday.
The Blackhawks evidently didn't see enough from Miller through the first week of camp to warrant keeping him around for their second preseason game Thursday against the Red Wings, so the 33-year-old winger will now hope to catch on with a different NHL club seeking veteran depth up front. However, at this stage, it looks like Miller may need to head overseas to continue his career.

Miller penned a professional tryout agreement with the Blackhawks on Monday, Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun Times reports.
Over the past two seasons, Miller logged just 83 contests for the Red Wings -- along with registering six goals and three helpers. Given his limited offensive production, if the veteran secures a permanent deal, it will likely be as a penalty-kill specialist.

It's been quite the whirlwind for Miller. In this week alone, he's been waived -- only to clear -- then assigned to the minors, and now he's heading back up to the parent club for the Red Wings. Injuries to Steve Ott (shoulder) Dylan Larkin (upper body) necessitated his full-circle movement around the organization. Needless to say, fantasy owners shouldn't concern themselves with this messy situation.

This was Miller's first helper on the season, which serves as a reminder that his role as a fourth-line winger and penalty-killing specialist is not conducive to garnering fantasy value. Miller has been a liability for the Red Wings, as he's on an active 12-game pointless streak with a minus-8 rating in that span.
Miller's extended slump couldn't come at a worse time. Detroit has five forwards on injured reserve, and coach Jeff Blashill has made the bottom-six winger a healthy scratch in three of the past four games despite the Wings desperately needing help up front. Miller is supposed to be earning his paycheck on the penalty kill, but he's frequently getting burned in his own zone and doesn't play enough -- 10:06 average ice time -- to see many offensive opportunities.

Miller displayed keen awareness on the play, moving toward the crease for the score after teammate Luke Glendening trapped goalie Henrik Lundqvist behind his cage. Points may be few and far between for Miller this season -- he has a defense-first mentality -- but it's worth noting that his ice time has climbed for three straight games.

Miller is 32 years old and coming off a season marred by significant injuries to his knee and jaw, but evidently the Wings aren't concerned about that moving forward. Miller is a penalty-killing specialist comfortable in Detroit's system. Since landing in the Motor City in 2009-10, he has generated 100 points in 449 games -- that might not cut it in the majority of fantasy leagues, but Miller helps the Wings with his versatility and solid defensive play.

The Red Wings have offered Miller a contract extension and a deal could be reached soon, MLive.com reports.
Significant injuries to his jaw and knee limited Miller to 28 contests in the 2015-16 season, but the Wings are willing to look past that due to the winger's proficiency on the fourth line and penalty kill. As noted in the report, his contract could include bonuses for playing a certain amount of games. Darren Helm reportedly has a contract offer on the table as well, but a Miller deal is expected to be worked out first.

Miller, a pending unrestricted free agent, is in consideration for a contract extension by the Red Wings, MLive.com reports.
Detroit worked with a penalty kill that was only decent in 2015-16, as it ranked 14th in the league at 81.6 percent. Miller excels in shorthanded situations, so it would make sense to keep him in the fold, especially if general manager Ken Holland can retain him at a reasonable rate -- Miller certainly didn't break the bank last year at $1.35 million. He underwent surgery to reconstruct his left ACL in January, but the recovery reportedly has gone well for the 32-year-old winger. Consider this nugget to be an FYI to fans of the Winged Wheel. He lacks fantasy value, having eclipsed the 20-point mark just once in his nine-year career.

Miller (lower body) will undergo surgery Friday to repair his torn meniscus and is facing a long-term absence, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports, citing Red Wings GM Ken Holland.
Miller does not have a clear timetable for his return but he's expected to be out for at least a month after sustaining the ailment last Sunday in a game against the Ducks. Joakim Andersson should get more consistent playing time without Miller in the lineup.
