Taylor Chorney: Announces retirement
Chorney announced his retirement from professional hockey Thursday, Seth Rorabaugh of TribLive.com reports.
Chorney was selected by the Oilers in the second round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. He spent eight seasons in the NHL split between Edmonton, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Washington and Columbus, totaling 22 points in 166 contests, before spending the final three years of his playing career in Europe.

Taylor Chorney: Heading to Switzerland
Chorney signed a one-year contract with Swiss club HC Lugano on Saturday.
Chorney was waived by the Capitals last February, and the Blue Jackets would use him for just one NHL game after plucking him off the wire. He amassed four goals and 18 assists over 166 NHL contests between service time with Edmonton, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Washington and Columbus. According to this latest report, the Swiss club will have the option to keep Chorney for another year at the conclusion of the 2018-19 campaign.

Blue Jackets' Taylor Chorney: Used sparingly by Columbus
Chorney played just one game since he was acquired by Columbus on Feb. 22.
Set to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer, the blueliner will probably look for a new home next season. The sole game that Chorney suited up for as a Blue Jacket was the team's final regular season contest, and was a product of head coach John Tortorella resting members of his defensive corps for the postseason.

Blue Jackets' Taylor Chorney: Getting settled with new employer
Chorney, who was claimed off waivers from the Capitals on Wednesday, is not expected to suit up for Thursday night's road tilt against the Panthers, Aaron Portzline of The Athletic Cleveland reports.
It sounds like Chorney is still settling into his new digs, but it's good to know that the Blue Jackets likely intend to start him out at the highest level versus AHL Springfield once he's ready. At any rate, Chorney will be a depth option for Columbus and presumably waiver fodder in the fantasy arena. He's only tacked on 22 points (four goals, 18 goals) through 165 games between the Oilers, Blues, Penguins and Capitals.

The Capitals waived Chorney on Tuesday, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports.
The Capitals recently acquired Michal Kempny in a trade with the Blackhawks, so they're no longer in need of Chorney's services as a depth defenseman. If he goes unclaimed, the 30-year-old blueliner will almost certainly be assigned to AHL Hershey, where he'll likely spend the rest of the 2017-18 campaign.

Chorney will likely garner more playing time in place of the injured Matt Niskanen (upper body). Capitals' Taylor Chorney: Expects to play on road trip
Chorney has been a healthy scratch in each of Washington's six game thus far, but he is expected to see his first action at some point on the team's upcoming four-game road trip, Isabelle Khurshudyan of The Washington Post reports.
The Capitals have wanted to give their new forwards, Zach Sanford and Brett Connolly, some experience to get familiar with the team, and unfortunately Chorney has been the most affected by the decision, despite being a defenseman. However, the 29-year-old isn't worried about how he'll perform once he's back on the ice. "No matter what, you want to play. I think that goes without saying," Chorney said. "We're all competitors who want to get out there and play. At the same time, I'm pretty confident in the way I played last season. I got to play in some big situations, and I think I held my own. I'm sure they know that, and I think they probably trust that when the time does come, I'll be able to do my job." Last season, Chorney recorded 56 hits and 58 blocked shots in 55 games, while adding six points (one goal, five assists).

Capitals' Taylor Chorney: Will play Wednesday
Chorney will be in the lineup Wednesday for Game 4 in Philadelphia, Chuck Gormley of CSN Washington reports.
The 28-year-old is being called upon to help fill the void left by Brooks Orpik (upper body) who will miss at least one game after being knocked out in the second period of Game 3. Chorney signed a two-year, one-way contract extension that carries a cap hit of $800,000 per season Friday, Isabelle Khurshudyan of The Washington Post reports.
The extension is just the second one-way deal that the 28-year-old Chorney has signed during his career. While Brooks Orpik and John Carlson were sidelined with lower-body injuries this season, Chorney stepped in to the lineup and excelled in his role as a sixth defenseman. For all the reliability that Chorney provides Washington's back end with, he won't provide much offensively, having tallied five points (all assists) in 45 games this season.

Chorney was considered questionable heading into the contest, but his presence on the ice for warmups indicates he'll be able to give it a go.
