John McCarthy: Announces retirement
McCarthy will retire from professional hockey due to health concerns, instead joining AHL San Jose's coaching staff.
McCarthy has served as the Barracuda's captain since the 2016-17 season. The 33-year-old racked up 130 goals and 167 helpers in 577 AHL contests. Over the course of his 11-year professional career, the Boston University product saw action in 88 NHL games, notching six points and 22 PIM.

Sharks' John McCarthy: Struggles mightily against expansion club
McCarthy was called up from AHL San Jose on Sunday, but he went minus-3 with two PIM in Sunday's 5-3 road win over the Golden Knights.
He's a career AHLer who has drawn into a mere 88 games (three goals, three assists) at the highest level since latching on with the Sharks in 2009-10. Expect him to be sent down before the regular season begins Wednesday.

Sharks' John McCarthy: Reassigned to AHL
McCarthy was reassigned to AHL San Jose on Monday, Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area reports.
McCarthy had just been recalled Saturday, as the club was pressed for forward depth, but he'll now head back to the AHL. The winger could be in line for another promotion should the team find themselves hit by the injury bug again.

Sharks' John McCarthy: Recalled from minors Saturday
The Sharks have recalled McCarthy from AHL Barracuda.
According to CSN Bay Area's Kevin Kurz, the Sharks will be without wingers Ben Smith (upper body) and Joonas Donskoi (lower body), for Saturday's contest against the Hurricanes. Enter McCarthy, a depth forward that commonly gets called up when injuries strike the parent club.

McCarthy signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Sharks on Thursday, Curtis Pashelka of the San Jose Mercury News reports.After opening the past season with AHL Chicago in the St. Louis organization, McCarthy finished up the campaign at AHL Worcester, where he had played the previous five years.
