Philip Varone: Headed for KHL
Varone agreed to a contract with KHL club Barys Nur-Sultan on Thursday, per his agent Aljosa Pilko.
Varone split time between AHL Laval and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last year, recording four goals and 15 assists in 33 contests. The 29-year-old center has logged 97 games in the NHL for Buffalo, Ottawa and Philadelphia in which he's registered eight goals, nine assists and 80 shots while averaging just 9:53 of ice time. Once the AHL season starts up, Varone could garner interest from NHL clubs who want him on hand for potential call-ups.

Penguins' Philip Varone: Brought in via trade
Varone, along with Riley Barber, was acquired by the Penguins from the Canadiens on Thursday in a swap for Joseph Blandisi and Jake Lucchini.
Varone hasn't appeared in an NHL game this season, though he did log 47 contests for the Flyers in 2018-19, notching three goals and four helpers. With the Rocket, the 29-year-old managed just 14 points this year, though injuries have limited him to a mere 27 contests.

Varone penned a one-year, two-way contract with the Habs on Wednesday worth $700,000 at the NHL level.
Varone dominated the minors the past three seasons, as he racked up 149 points in 161 minor-league contests. The center appeared in 47 games for the Flyers last season, in which he tallied three goals, four assists and 34 shots while averaging 7:55 of ice time. Despite the two-way nature of his deal, Varone could secure a more permanent spot on the 23-man roster with a strong showing in training camp.

Flyers' Philip Varone: Eighteen-game pointless run
Varone finished the 2018-19 season with three goals, seven points, 34 shots on net, eight PIM and a minus-2 rating in 47 games.
Overall, that's not bad, but a vast majority of that production came before the middle of February. Varone went scoreless in his final 18 NHL games and only had 15 shots on net during that stretch. So while owners can be pleased Varone set career highs in the games played, goals and assists categories, it still feels as though he left something to be desired.

The 28-year-old has been in and out of the lineup during his scoreless streak, so his pointless run dates back to Feb. 19. But even if Varone doesn't post another point this season, 2018-19 has still been one of his better efforts. The Flyers' fourth line got the offense rolling, as Varone notched both his points by the 11-minute mark of the first period. The 28-year-old has only five points on the season, but four of them (two goals, two helpers) have come in the last seven games. He hasn't played even 10 minutes in any of those contests, however, and without a better line placement, the floor could fall out of his fantasy value at any moment.

The 28-year-old scored shortly after getting recalled just before Christmas, but he hasn't done anything since then. The most he's ever played in an NHL season is 28 games, so there's not a large enough sample size to make any determinations of what Varone could produce if he continues to receive playing time. Still, owners would have to be very desperate to deploy Varone at this juncture.

Varone was recalled from AHL Lehigh Valley on Thursday.
Varone was summoned to the parent club in the wake of news that Jori Lehtera has been prosecuted in a cocaine ring and will stand trial Dec. 31. The Flyers could use Jordan Weal as a fourth-line center, but Dave Isaac of the Courier Post reports that Varone was the one to show up in that spot in Thursday's a.m. session. Varone has accumulated 28 points (11 goals, 17 assists) through 22 games for the AHL's Phantoms this season.

Varone was reassigned to AHL Lehigh Valley on Wednesday.
Varone's demotion could be temporary and simply part of roster shuffling ahead of the Christmas roster freeze. Once the freeze goes into effect, the club can still recall him and can exceed the 23-man roster limit in doing so. In his four NHL appearances this season, the center failed to register a point while logging 8:07 of ice time. Without an increased role, the Ontario native won't offer much in terms of fantasy value.

The fifth-rounder from the 2009 draft hasn't taken advantage of his call-ups this season, managing just one shot and a minus-2 rating through six games.
