Cowen was released from his professional tryout with the Avalanche on Wednesday.
A 2009 first-round pick, Cowen attempted to earn a roster spot with the Avalanche on short notice after having the final year of his contract with the Maple Leafs bought out. While he won't make the club's Opening Night roster, it wouldn't be surprising if another team were to give him a shot.

Cowen's last taste of NHL action came in 2015-16, when he tallied four assists in 37 games with the Senators. The 26-year-old's previous contract was bought out by the Leafs in December, primarily due to lingering concerns surrounding a hip injury that prevented him from suiting up for a single contest last season, but it appears as though that ailment may finally be behind him. However, even if he's able to land a spot on Colorado's Opening Night roster, Cowen won't be a viable fantasy option in 2017-18.

Cowen (hip) lost his arbitration case Wednesday, which means his buyout by the Leafs is official, Bob McKenzie of TSN reports.
With the buyout ruled on, Cowen is now a free agent who can sign with any NHL team. The defenseman may struggle to land with another franchise, though, given the lingering concerns about his hip injury that caused the dispute in the first place.

The dilemma with Cowen's contract dates back to February of this year when the Leafs placed the defenseman on waivers due to a persistent hip injury. After the 25-year-old failed to recover on a timely schedule, Toronto decided it was best to look into a buyout scenario. However, because of the complications with Cowen's hip, a standard buyout wasn't an option. What resulted was the two parties consulting an arbitrator to decide what to do about the contract situation and it appears a decision may be coming in the near future. As it stands, the Maple Leafs would go from getting a $650K credit to taking a $3.5M cap hit if Cowen were to win the case.

Maple Leafs' Jared Cowen: Arbitrator to determine fate with Leafs
The Maple Leafs will need an arbitrator to decide whether they can buy out the final year of Cowen's contract at $3.1 million, TSN reports. Various sources have indicated that the defenseman has experienced complications from a hip injury dating back to the regular reason; therefore, a standard buyout cannot take place.
This situation is like a hockey soap opera stuck on loop. The Buds have been relentless in trying to dump the 25-year-old, who was thrown into the Dion Phaneuf trade last February. He's been waived multiple times and refused to report to AHL Toronto, causing the Leafs to explore buyout options. Considering that Toronto had the worst record in the league last year and yet still had no use for Cowen, fantasy owners aren't likely to have much use for him either this year.

The Leafs placed Cowen on waivers Wednesday for the purpose of buying out his contract, Wayne Scanlan of the Ottawa Citizen reports.
NHL teams are required to waive a player before executing a buyout. Assuming Cowen ends up clearing waivers, the Buds would then be able to complete the buyout process. We're talking about a guy who, despite dealing with a significant hip injury, was acquired from the Senators in the Dion Phaneuf swap this past February, only to get waived and ultimately sent down to minor-league affiliate AHL Toronto. After past attempts to get rid of Cowen proved fruitless, the Leafs may be able to finally move on from him and garner hefty buyout savings amounting to $3.75 million in 2016-17.

In a standoff with the organization over his assignment to the team's AHL affiliate, it appears the Maple Leafs have finally decided it wasn't worth fighting over. Assuming the buyout occurs as expected, Cowen will be free to sign with another team at that point. In 37 outings with Ottawa this year, the 25-year-old only recorded four points, which doesn't offer any hope of fantasy relevance in the event that he's recalled by Toronto in the near future.

On Feb. 9, Cowen was packaged in a nine-player deal, highlighted by blueliner Dion Phaneuf landing in Ottawa. However, it's apparent that the Buds don't have serious plans to roster Cowen, as Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports that the team is trying to use Cowen as a trade piece with the deadline looming. Considering that he wasn't snatched off the wire, Cowen will almost certainly need to be packaged in a deal with more established players or even draft picks in order to move away from the Leafs. If that effort proves fruitless, he could be assigned to the minors.

Cowen was on injured reserve for 13 days, but his activation gives him a fighting chance of debuting with the Leafs come Saturday evening. Still, there is no incentive to rush the big defenseman into the lineup since the Buds are well out of the playoff picture at this point.

This isn't a surprise -- we'd already told you Cowen would be out 10 days with that hip issue, so this moves provides the Buds with some roster relief. Cowen's hips have plagued him for a while and recent tests revealed that while there's no injury, his hip flexors are really tight. The team's trainers are working with him to loosen the muscles and tendons as best they can before he officially slips on his new blue and white jersey.

Cowen (hip), who was traded from Ottawa to Toronto on Tuesday, is not likely to make his Maple Leafs debut for approximately 10 days, TSN's Mark Masters reports.
Cowen was included in a nine-player swap that involved captain Dion Phaneuf landing in Ottawa. It's been a rough year for Cowen as he went under the knife early in the offseason to correct an abdominal tear, battled a lower-body injury and now has an issue with his hip. At 6-foot-5, 230 pounds, Cowen provides size and physicality that the Buds would have otherwise lost by shipping away Phaneuf, but perhaps Toronto's medical staff can treat him to the point where he stays on the ice with consistency - still, that could be wishful thinking as Cowen's already missed 15 games this campaign, often acting like a boomerang between game ice and the training room.

Cowen was traded to the Maple Leafs on Tuesday along with Milan Michalek, Colin Greening, Tobias Lindberg and a draft pick in exchange for Dion Phaneuf and several prospects.
The ninth overall pick in 2009, Cowen hasn't come remotely close to living up to that lofty status, often serving as a healthy scratch this year. After sitting out the Sens' last two games as a healthy scratch, Cowen gets to play Tuesday with Cody Ceci (upper body) on the sidelines. The 24-year-old Cowen boasts great size and first-round pedigree, but has thus far been unable to parlay those attributes into much production on NHL ice; he owns only three points in 29 games this year while mostly playing third-pairing minutes.
