Canucks' Ryan Spooner: To be bought out
The Canucks placed Spooner on waivers Saturday with the intention of buying out the remainder of his contract, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.
Spooner was never able to build off of a promising 2015-16 campaign, turning in one of his worst to date last season with just nine points over 52 games with three different teams. Assuming he goes unclaimed, Spooner will hit free agency looking for another chance to revive his career elsewhere.

Spooner's timetable was rather open-ended, but he has put a target date on the map. After weak showings with both the Rangers (two points in 16 games) and Oilers (three points in 25 games), Spooner may have finally found a home with the Canucks. Through six games with his new club, Spooner has racked up three assists. He remains under contract for the remainder of the year and next season and should get ample opportunity to prove his worth on a Vancouver squad that has fallen out of the playoff picture.

Spooner -- who was just acquired from the Oilers on Saturday -- originally reported to the Comets, but will get a look with Vancouver. The Ottawa native appeared in 25 games for Edmonton this season, in which he recorded two goals, one assist and 25 shots while averaging 9:40 of ice time. Once Brandon Sutter (undisclosed) or Jake Virtanen (undisclosed) is cleared to return, Spooner figures to be headed back to Utica.
