Gryba announced his retirement from the NHL on Sunday.
The Flames released Gryba from his PTO contract Thursday after appearing in just 10 NHL contests last season. The 31-year-old blueliner scored seven goals and 43 points in 289 career games. He also racked up 776 hits and 368 penalty minutes.

Gryba was always considered an extreme longshot to make Calgary's 23-man roster, so this news doesn't come as a surprise. If the wants to remain in North America, the 31-year-old blueliner will likely have to settle for a two-way deal with a different NHL organization.

Flames' Eric Gryba: Given tryout
Gryba will join the Flames on a professional tryout agreement for the preseason, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960 The Fan reports.
The 31-year-old defenseman spent last season with the Devils organization, drawing into 10 games at the NHL level and and additional 47 contests with AHL Binghamton. Gryba has never exceeded 12 points in a season at either level, and at best he will serve as organizational depth if he shows well enough to earn a contract. Gryba will likely be competing with Andrew MacDonald for a roster spot, as both defenders are on tryouts.

Devils' Eric Gryba: Drops to waivers
The Devils waived Gryba on Sunday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.
Gryba is expected to clear waivers and be assigned to AHL Binghamton. He's had just five points in 32 games there this season, but he has shown an edge with 59 PIM in that span. This leaves just six healthy defensemen on the roster, which may signal that Sami Vatanen (concussion) is nearing a return from injured reserve.

Gryba's call-up directly corresponds to Sami Vatanen's (concussion) placement on injured reserve. It takes a special type of defenseman to be able to join the rush and pitch in offensively, but Gryba isn't cut from that cloth. Instead, he's a rugged shutdown type who will block a fair amount of shots.

Gryba was assigned to AHL Binghamton on Friday.
The Devils have activated Sami Vatanen (lower body) from injured reserve, so Gryba will shuffle back to the minors, where he's managed 40 points (14 goals, 26 assists) over 214 contests between the affiliates belonging to the Senators, Oilers and Devils.

Devils' Eric Gryba: Shipped back to minors
Gryba was reassigned to AHL Binghamton on Tuesday to clear a roster spot for Ben Lovejoy (lower body).
Gryba only saw action in two of a possible seven games while with the Devils and averaged a mere 12:37 when he was in the lineup. With Lovejoy healthy, the club will send Gryba back to the minors, where he should have plenty of opportunity to log significant minutes.

Gryba was recalled from AHL Binghamton on Tuesday.
The Devils are fortunate that Gryba cleared waivers Friday, as the team needs him in the wake of a lower-body injury to Ben Lovejoy, who is now on injured reserve. Of course, Gryba hasn't played since the 2017-18 season with the Oilers, so it's probably going to take him awhile to find his bearings. As a result, It's safe to ignore the Saskatchewan native in all formats.

Gryba will be designated for waivers by the Devils on Thursday, Corey Masisak of The Athletic reports.
The move to place Gryba on waivers and reassign him to the minors could be an indication Cory Schneider (hip) is nearing a return, as the club makes a move to clear up a spot on the 23-man roster. The 30-year-old Gryba has yet to appear in a game for New Jersey this season, so his pending demotion -- assuming he goes unclaimed -- shouldn't come as a surprise.

Gryba secured a one-year, two-way contract with the Devils on Sunday. The deal is worth $700,000 in the NHL and $300,000 in the AHL, Bob McKenzie of TSN reports.
The Oilers bought out Gryba's previous contract, which afforded the defenseman the opportunity to test the open market in free agency. There's nothing to see here from a fantasy perspective since the Canadian rearguard has only accumulated 43 points (seven goals, 36 assists) over 279 career contests, and it's far from a guarantee that he even starts the 2018-19 campaign in the NHL.

Eric Gryba: Placed on waivers
Gryba was waived unconditionally by the Oilers on Thursday in order to buy out his contract.
The move will free up $600,000 in cap space for Edmonton for the 2018-19 campaign and push $300,000 to 2019-20. With the cap increasing to at least $79.5 million (up from $75 million), it seems like a relatively minor savings and likely speaks more to the fact that the 30-year-old only made 21 appearances for the Oilers last year. In 279 NHL contests, the blueliner has tallied seven goals, 36 assists and 358 PIM. If no team claims Gryba off waivers, it likely means he will not be on a NHL roster for the 2018-19 campaign when you consider his $900,000 cap hit is relatively cost effective.

They were both assists, as Gryba found a way to finally get on the scoresheet in a 7-5 victory. The third-pairing blueliner doesn't offer much fantasy value outside his 31 PIM and strong hit totals, so look elsewhere if you need to add an offensive fantasy blueliner to your squad.

Gryba has zero points in 16 outings this season, having last registered a point on March 28, 2017.
Considering his career-high point total is just 12, which he registered while with Ottawa in 2014-15, fantasy owners probably shouldn't have gone into the season expecting much out of Gryba. In fact, over the course of the last two years with Edmonton, the blueliner has combined for three goals and nine helpers. Once Andrej Sekera (knee) is cleared to make his 2017-18 debut, the 29-year-old Gryba could find himself relegated to the press box.

Gryba scored the game-winning goal in the third period of Thursday's 3-1 victory over the Kings.
Less than four minutes after Los Angeles tied the game 1-1, Gryba answered back with the goal on what he called "a lucky play" after the game. That may well be an apt description, as the blueliner's calling card is his physicality (71 hits and 34 PIM through 18 games), not his offense (two points, 18 shots).
