Anders Nilsson: Headed for retirement
Nilsson announced Sunday via his personal Instagram account that he has retired from professional hockey.
Nilsson's last professional action came with the Senators in December 2019 after he was never able to fully overcome concussion symptoms and recurring neck issues to resume his career. The goaltender played in parts of seven seasons in NHL with the Islanders, Oilers, Blues, Sabres, Canucks and Sens, logging a 59-74-15 record, 3.06 GAA and .907 save percentage across 161 appearances. The 31-year-old was a member of the Lightning's Stanley Cup-winning squad this past season, but he never suited up for Tampa Bay while he was stashed on long-term injured reserve to help the team comply with the salary cap.

Lightning's Anders Nilsson: Dealt to Sunshine State
Ottawa traded Nilsson (concussion) and Marian Gaborik to Tampa Bay in exchange for Cedric Paquette, Braydon Coburn, and a 2022 second-round pick on Sunday.
Nilsson hasn't played since Dec. 16 of last season and is still experiencing some concussion symptoms. The Lightning have already announced that he will not play this season and will be placed on long-term injured reserve. The 30-year-old netminder will be an unrestricted free agent after this season.

At this point, it seems unlikely the Nilsson will be ready for the start of the season, though it's possible general manager Pierre Dorian just hasn't touched base with the netminder. Even if fully fit, Nilsson figures to begin the year as the No. 2 option behind offseason acquisition Matt Murray.

Nilsson (concussion) has yet to fully recover and continues to suffer from concussion symptoms, Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reports.
As a result of Nilsson's continued concussion problems, general manager Pierre Dorian told reporters the Senators would be looking for veteran goalie help either via trade of free agency. In 20 appearances for Ottawa last year, the 29-year-old netminder went 9-9-2 with a career-worst 3.18 GAA. Combined with his health concerns, it shouldn't come as a shock to see Ottawa pursuing other options between the pipes.

Nilsson missed the second half of the 2019-20 campaign due to a concussion, but he passed baseline testing in mid-April, and it sounds like he'll be back to 100 percent whenever next season begins. Craig Anderson won't be re-signing with the Senators, which means Nilsson will battle Marcus Hogberg for Ottawa's starting job during training camp. The 30-year-old backstop posted a 9-9-2 record while registering a 3.18 GAA and .908 save percentage in 20 appearances last campaign.

Nilsson will still need to get back onto the ice and take some rubber before he can be fully cleared to resume playing. Still, it's a step in the right direction and could see the netminder back in the crease if the league resumes the 2019-20 regular season. Otherwise, fans and fantasy owners will need to look forward to next year when the Swede should be the No. 1 option in Ottawa.

Nilsson really wasn't playing that well before the injury took place, and given that the Senators are in no hurry to win now, they were also in no hurry to rush him back. Nilsson will likely be in competition with Marcus Hogberg for Ottawa's goaltending top job at the start of 2020-21.

At this point, it's looking more and more likely that Nilsson won't be ready to return before the 2019-20 campaign comes to an end. If that ends up being the case, the 29-year-old Swede will finish the season having posted a 9-9-2 record while registering a 3.18 GAA and .908 save percentage in 20 appearances.

Nilsson has been sidelined for over two months, and although he's clearly making progress in his recovery, there's no reason for the Senators to rush him back, as they're not going to make the playoffs in 2019-20. Craig Anderson has the start against Florida and will likely be the starter through the end of the week, but this is an encouraging sign for Nilsson that he might be back to game action soon. Nilsson owners would love to have him back for Jan. 10 when the Senators go up against Detroit and its league-worst offense, and this puts him on track to possibly be the netminder for that contest.

Nilsson was reportedly sidelined versus the Predators on Thursday due to an illness, but it now appears that he was suffering from a more serious injury. The netminder won't be available for the Senators' next two outings ahead of the Christmas break. Nilsson stopped 38 shots in Saturday's 4-3 overtime win over the Blue Jackets.
The only puck to get past him through two periods barely did so -- Nilsson plucked Cam Atkinson's attempt to tuck the puck inside the far post out of the air, but it was determined on video review his glove was across the goal line. The 29-year-old netminder then had to hang on when Columbus outshot Ottawa 20-5 in the third, but he was eventually rewarded for his efforts. Nilsson is still settling in as the Sens' No. 1, but he's 2-0-1 over his last three starts, and on the year he sports a 3.02 GAA and solid .913 save percentage.
