  • Shane Doan: Retires from hockey

Doan announced his retirement via The Arizona Republic on Wednesday.

Doan will hang up his skates following a 21-year career that started with the old Winnipeg Jets, who moved to the desert and became the Coyotes. In all, the winger racked up an impressive 402 goals, 570 assists and 1,353 PIM in 1,540 games. Heading into the offseason, Arizona had informed the veteran that he wasn't going to be retained. Regardless of whether he was unable to secure a landing spot with another club or just couldn't bring himself to put on another sweater, Doan will go down as the ultimate Coyote and a potential Hall of Famer, though it's questionable whether he's compiled enough stats, having failed to reach 500 goals or 1,000 points in his career.

  • Shane Doan: Will not be retained

Doan has been informed by the Coyotes that they will not be re-signing him this offseason, Pierre LeBrun of TSN reports.

The writing was likely on the wall for Doan after Arizona did not include him on its protected players list. If the 40-year-old decides to continue his career, the Golden Knights could sign him, thereby designating Doan as their selection from the Coyotes. The winger has been with the Yotes since their inception, having played his first NHL season with the original Winnipeg Jets. At this point, one would imagine Doan would like the chance to suit up for a contender after playing in a mere 55 playoffs contests -- compared to 1,540 regular-season outings.

  • Coyotes' Shane Doan: Could end up in Vegas

Doan remains without a contract heading into 2017-18, thus making him eligible for the Vegas expansion draft June 21, theScore reports.

The long-time Coyotes captain had the worst showing of his career last year, managing just six goals and 27 points. Last week, Doan reportedly told his agent that he's leaning toward playing another season, and since he's set to become an unrestricted free agent in July, the Golden Knights have access to three days of exclusive negotiation rights should they make him their selection in the draft. At any rate, if the Alberta native decides to stick around for one more year, it'll be interesting to see where he ends up.

  • Coyotes' Shane Doan: Leaning toward playing one more season

According to his agent, Terry Bross, Doan is leaning toward playing one more year before retiring, Craig Morgan of Arizona Sports reports.

Doan has spent his entire 21-year career with the same organization, making him one of just nine players in NHL history to have had such a tenure. It's hard to imagine the 40-year-old forward donning a different sweater in 2017-18 if he does decide to play one final season, but it remains to be seen whether he still fits into the Coyotes' plans, as they're focused on developing their young talent, which means Doan would be taking important ice time from their prospects. Doan is expected to make a final decision by the conclusion of the NHL draft, so his status for next season should become clear by the end of June. Either way, the aging winger only tallied 27 points in 74 games last season, so he's not a viable option in most season-long fantasy formats at this stage in his career.

  • Coyotes' Shane Doan: Ready to return

Doan (lower body) will play Thursday with the Canucks in town, Craig Morgan of Arizona Sports reports.

Doan, who may be contemplating retirement, certainly wouldn't want to cap off an illustrious career with an injury. Look for him to slot back into a top-six role for this next contest while doing everything in his power to finish strong.
