Andrew Ference: Announces retirement
Ference (hip) will hang up his skates following a 16-year NHL career.
Ference spent the entire 2016-17 season on long-term injured reserve due to a hip injury, but with his contract officially expired, he'll step away. The blueliner played for Pittsburgh, Calgary, Boston and Edmonton over the course of his 16-year career, racking up 43 goals, 182 helpers and 753 PIM over 907 games. The 38-year-old also saw action in 120 playoff contests, totaling 38 points and securing a Stanley Cup championship in 2011 with the Bruins.

At 37 years old and coming off major hip surgery in January, Ference expectedly failed his medical exam, likely spelling the end of his 18-year career. If the former Stanley Cup champion decides to hang up his skates, he ends his career with 263 points in 1,027 NHL games (including the playoffs).

Ference (hip) admits that his career is most likely finished, Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal reports.
After undergoing hip surgery in January, the 37-year-old defenseman will report to Oilers training camp, where he is expected to fail his physical and be placed on long-term injured reserve, effectively ending his career. Ference won the Stanley Cup in 2011 with Boston, and tallied 169 points (28 goals, 141 assists) in 656 career NHL games.

Ference was activated off injured reserve a week ago, but never saw any game action and appears to still be dealing with hip issues. He'll be eligible to return whenever healthy, but there's no indication of when that will be at this point.

Ference (undisclosed) was activated off injured reserve by the Oilers on Sunday, Mark Spector of Sportsnet reports.
With Oscar Klefbom out, Ference is expected to draw into the lineup, for the Oilers' next game Monday against the Bruins. He's expected to replace Nikita Nikitin on Monday, though it's not official yet.

The former eighth-round pick can be considered as out indefinitely.
