Marian Gaborik: Officially retires Thursday
Gaborik officially announced his retirement Thursday.
Gaborik hasn't played since the 2017-18 campaign due to a significant back injury, so his announcement shouldn't come as a surprise. Over the course of his 17-year career, the Slovakian winger racked up 407 goals and 408 assists in 1035 NHL games, winning a Stanley Cup with the Kings back in 2014.

Lightning's Marian Gaborik: Traded to Tampa Bay
The Senators traded Gaborik (back) and Anders Nilsson to the Lightning in exchange for Cedric Paquette, Braydon Coburn, and a 2022 second-round draft pick on Sunday.
Gaborik has missed the last two seasons after undergoing back surgery and it doesn't appear there's an NHL return in his future. The 38-year-old forward has one season left under contract which the Lightning will likely stash on long-term injured reserve.

Gaborik (back) could be placed on long-term injured reserve to open the 2018-19 season, Sporting News reports.
The veteran winger went under the knife in April to repair a herniated disc in his back. There hasn't been any new information on Gaborik since the operation, but that's actually an ominous sign as it implies that he's still rehabbing the injury and not making any obvious strides in his recovery. Placing the 37-year-old on LTIR would be a prudent move for the Senators considering it would free up salary-cap space against the upper limit, though it would further decimate what little fantasy value Gaborik even has left.

Gaborik is expected to resume training in eight weeks in order to start preparing for the 2018-19 campaign. The 35-year-old is unlikely to look back on this season fondly, as he registered 21 points while playing in a mere 46 games split between Ottawa and Los Angeles. The veteran has three more years remaining on his deal, which will pay him $4.875 million through the 2020-21 campaign -- assuming he doesn't retire before then.

Gaborik has already been ruled out for the remainder of the 2017-18 season, but now the culprit behind his absence has been revealed. The veteran winger closed out a disappointing 2017-18 season mustering just 46 games played due to various issues, but he did manage to rack up 21 points -- 11 goals and 10 assists -- between the Kings and the Senators when on the ice. Gaborik remains under contract with the team through 2020-21, so he should retake his spot as a top-six forward with the Senators next season assuming everything checks out with his back.
