Devante Smith-Pelly: Tryout extended
AHL Laval extended Smith-Pelly's professional tryout Monday, Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette reports.
Smith-Pelly has three goals and three assists in 15 games with the Rocket. The 29-year-old forward, who hasn't played in the NHL since 2019, played parts of two seasons for Montreal in 2015-16.

Devante Smith-Pelly: Hooks up with Laval on PTO
Smith-Pelly joined AHL Laval on a professional tryout at the beginning of January, Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette reports.
Smith-Pelly agreed to the PTO earlier in January, but Montreal's AHL affiliate has not played since he began practicing with the team. He could be in the lineup Wednesday against Syracuse, the Rocket's first game since Dec. 17. Laval has lost several players to the its NHL parent club while the Canadiens deal with COVID-19 protocols. Smith-Pelly hasn't played in the NHL since 2019 and bounced around since then, trying out for the Flames, playing in the KHL, and hooking up with AHL Ontario for 14 games last season.

Devante Smith-Pelly: Lands AHL PTO
Smith-Pelly signed a professional tryout agreement with AHL Ontario on Monday, Andrew Gillis of NBCSN Washington reports.
After eight seasons in the NHL, Smith-Pelly spent the 2019-20 campaign with KHL Kunlun, where he scored 11 points in 40 games. He'll return to North American hockey with AHL Ontario and could be eyeing an NHL return at some point.

Devante Smith-Pelly: Heading overseas
Smith-Pelly signed a one-year deal with the KHL's Kunlun Red Star on Monday.
Smith-Pelly tried his hand on a PTO with the Flames this preseason, but he couldn't make the cut and found no other bidders. The 27-year-old was an integral part of the Capitals' 2018 Stanley Cup win, as he scored seven goals over 24 postseason games. However, he managed just eight points in 54 regular-season games the following year, so he'll look to fine-tune his game for another shot in the NHL next season.

Flames' Devante Smith-Pelly: Released from tryout
Smith-Pelly was released by the Flames on Saturday.
With the signing of fellow tryout player Tobias Rieder, there was neither room on the roster or cap space to fit Smith-Pelly in. The veteran forward will become a free agent.

Flames' Devante Smith-Pelly: Secures tryout
Smith-Pelly signed a professional tryout agreement with Calgary on Wednesday.
Smith-Pelly averaged a mere 10:51 of ice time with the Capitals last season and would likely be limited to a similar role if he secured a permanent deal from the Flames. The winger would certainly add some grit and experience to a relatively young group of forwards, but would need to not only beat out fellow camp invitees Tobias Rieder and Zac Rinaldo, but also up-and-coming prospects Buddy Robinson and Dillon Dube for a spot on the 23-man roster.

Capitals' Devante Smith-Pelly: Called up ahead of Game 5
Smith-Pelly was recalled from AHL Hershey on Friday.
Smith-Pelly had a rough second season with the Capitals, as he managed only eight points with a minus-6 rating through 54 games. Still, rest assured that no loyal fan of the Caps has forgotten about the fiery winger's heroics from 2018, when he scored seven goals -- including a pair of game-winning tallies -- on a 24.1 shooting percentage en route to the franchise's first-ever Stanley Cup win. He's back in the picture with T.J. Oshie (upper body) out for an extended period of time.

Capitals' Devante Smith-Pelly: Passes through waivers unclaimed
Smith-Pelly cleared waivers Thursday, Chris Kuc of The Athletic reports.
It remains unknown whether Smith-Pelly will report to AHL Hershey given that he can be recalled after the roster limit is lifted following Monday's trade deadline. In any event, the 26-year-old's fantasy value is virtually non-existent in the short term, as he's managed just four goals and eight points in 54 games. The competition for a lineup spot is even more intense following the acquisition of Carl Hagelin from the Kings on Thursday.

Capitals' Devante Smith-Pelly: Jettisoned to waivers
Smith-Pelly was placed on waivers by the Capitals on Wednesday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.
It's been an ugly season for the 26-year-old who hasn't scored a point since Dec. 31. Smith-Pelly had been in and out of the lineup recently, and only has eight points in 54 games. If Smith-Pelly couldn't make it on a playoff team, it's hard to see a team in the league pick him up. If no team claims the winger, he will likely head to AHL Hershey.

Capitals' Devante Smith-Pelly: Mired in drought
Smith-Pelly has tallied just two assists in his last 19 games.
Smith-Pelly had some conditioning issues in training camp that seemed to slow him out of the starting gate, but despite the recent struggles, he's not far off the pace that gave him 16 points in 2017-18. The 26-year-old should finish in the 15-20 point range if he can log consistent ice time, but his fantasy value remains very limited even in deeper formats.

Capitals' Devante Smith-Pelly: Scheduled to practice Thursday
Smith-Pelly (lower body) is expected to return to practice Thursday morning, NBC Sports Washington reports.
Smith-Pelly sustained his injury in Monday's game against the Islanders, with the bottom-six winger having been limited to 5:26 of ice time in a 4-1 win. While he looks none the worse for wear, fantasy owners hoping for Smith-Pelly to mirror his production from the 2018 playoffs surely have been disappointed. If you recall, DSP scored in the final three games against Vegas for the right to lift the Stanley Cup, but he's only posted four goals and two helpers over 24 games this season.

Capitals' Devante Smith-Pelly: Questionable to return Monday
Smith-Pelly (lower body) is questionable to return to Monday's game against the Islanders, Isabelle Khurshudyan of The Washington Post reports.
Smith-Pelly blocked a shot off his ankle in the first period and saw just two shifts during the second period. The 26-year-old is a fairly important component to the Capitals' depth scoring with four goals and six points in a bottom-six role this season.

Capitals' Devante Smith-Pelly: Pots goal Friday
Smith-Pelly tallied a goal and two shots in Friday's 3-2 overtime win against the Avalanche.
The goal snaps a five-game scoring drought for Smith-Pelly and brings him to three goals and five points in 19 games. Such a pace would put the 26-year-old in the 15-20 point range he's been averaging in recent seasons, but needless to say his fantasy value remains quite limited.

Capitals' Devante Smith-Pelly: Random two-point effort
Smith-Pelly collected a goal and an assist Monday, helping the Capitals to a 4-2 home win over the Oilers.
Smith-Pelly helped the Caps jump out to an early 2-0 lead by factoring into a pair of first-period goals. While he was one of the most clutch performers in the 2018 Stanley Cup Finals against the Golden Knights, DSP only had two points through 12 contests heading into Monday's action, though to be fair, there's only so much he can do as a skater averaging 11 minutes of ice time per game.

Capitals' Devante Smith-Pelly: Pots first goal of season Friday
Smith-Pelly recorded a goal, four shots and three hits during Friday's 6-5 shootout loss to the Panthers.
One of Washington's playoff heroes, Smith-Pelly is starting to overcome some conditioning issues that dogged him during the preseason. It's worth noting that the 26-year-old winger got a look on the top line with Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov following some line shuffling during the loss. Washington continues to look for someone to take that prominent role while Tom Wilson (suspension) serves his punishment, so if Smith-Pelly gets an extended audition with the dynamic Russian duo, his short-term fantasy value would skyrocket. Keep an eye on the Caps' lines in the coming days.

Capitals' Devante Smith-Pelly: Will play Friday
Smith-Pelly (coach's decision) will be in the lineup against the Hurricanes on Friday.
Smith-Pelly dismissed reports that conditioning was the reason he was being held out of the lineup, but wouldn't elaborate further. Whatever the reason, the winger appears to have met coach Todd Reirden's standards, as he will dress for the first time this preseason.

Capitals' Devante Smith-Pelly: Not playing Tuesday
Smith-Pelly (coach's decision) won't play Tuesday against the Blues according to head coach Todd Reirden, JJ Regan of NBC Sports Washington reports.
This is a weird situation. Reirden has said repeatedly that Smith-Pelly isn't injured, but he hasn't played in a single preseason game yet. We don't know what's happening behind the scenes but will provide an update once more information surfaces.

Capitals' Devante Smith-Pelly: Conditioning not meeting standards
Smith-Pelly's has been missing preseason games due to his conditioning, Isabelle Khurshudyan of The Washington Post reports.
This makes much more sense after Capitals head coach Todd Reirden insisted that Smith-Pelly isn't dealing with an injury, but wouldn't disclose the exact nature of the winger's absence. DSP was huge in the 2018 playoffs, as he scored seven times -- including goals in the final three games against Vegas -- and added an assist through 24 games en route to a Stanley Cup win. Smith-Pelly signed a one-year, $1 million extension with the Capitals in June.
