Scott Darling: Joins minor-league club
Darling signed a professional tryout agreement with AHL Chicago on Monday, Scott Powers of The Athletic reports.
Darling last appeared in an NHL game back in 2018-19, posting a 2-4-2 record and .884 save percentage in eight games with Carolina. The veteran netminder spent the previous campaign overseas. At this point, the best Darling could likely hope for would be to parlay the PTO with the Wolves into a two-way NHL deal down the road.

Scott Darling: Released from PTO
Darling has been released from his professional tryout with the Panthers.
The Panthers have pretty good depth at goaltender, so it was always going to be an uphill battle for Darling to secure a deal with the club. The 32-year-old backstop will likely look for a two-way deal elsewhere, and if he's unable to find one, he may opt to head overseas to continue his playing career.

Panthers' Scott Darling: Lands PTO with Florida
Darling signed a professional tryout agreement with the Panthers on Sunday, George Richards of Panthers Press Box reports.
After posting a .887 save percentage and 3.20 GAA in 51 appearances with Carolina from 2017-2019, Darling spent last season with Innsbruck HC in Austria. He struggled there as well, recording a .898 save percentage and 3.34 GAA. It's hard to picture the 32-year-old knocking off Chris Driedger to secure the backup job behind Sergei Bobrovsky.

Scott Darling: Signs in Austria
Darling signed with HC TWK Innsbruck of the Austrian Hockey League on Monday.
Darling struggled in his final two seasons with the Hurricanes, as he posted a 15-25-9 record with an .887 save percentage, and the team bought out his contract in July. He'll now try his hand overseas and try to revitalize his career. Darling could give the NHL another shot next year.

Scott Darling: Becomes UFA after buyout
Darling was bought out by the Panthers on Monday.
The Panthers acquired Darling and a 2020 sixth-round draft pick from the Hurricanes in exchange for goaltender James Reimer on Sunday, but neither team had any interest in retaining him. Still, purchasing the final two years of Darling's contract will cost Carolina $1.83 million over the next four years. It's been a major fall from grace for the ex-Blackhawk, as he failed to hold down a No. 1 goalie job in Raleigh following a 2016-17 campaign in which he posted an 18-5-5 record, 2.38 GAA and .924 save percentage in the Windy City.

Panthers' Scott Darling: Swapped to Sunshine State
Darling was traded to the Panthers with a 2020 sixth-round pick in exchange for James Reimer on Sunday, Bob McKenzie of TSN reports.
Darling was already looking at a potential buyout negotiation with the Hurricanes, and is expected to face the same process with the Panthers. This past season, the 30-year-old netminder was demoted to the minors before ultimately deciding to step away from the game entirely in an attempt to regroup mentally. Pending buyout negotiations with Darling, the Panthers will be without a netminder on the NHL roster after Roberto Luongo chose to retire this offseason.

Hurricanes' Scott Darling: Time with Canes all but over

Darling is reportedly aware of his team's intentions, and it should come as no surprise considering how poorly he's played since signing with Carolina back in May 2017. This past season, the 30-year-old netminder was demoted to the minors before ultimately deciding to step away from the game entirely in an attempt to regroup mentally. While it would appear likely that another team will give Darling a chance to earn a roster spot in training camp next season, teams will certainly want assurances from him that his head is in the right place before they commit any money or term to him.

Hurricanes' Scott Darling: Takes leave of absence
Darling (personal) will step away from AHL Charlotte indefinitely, Chip Alexander of The Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Darling has been in the minors since mid-December and it's certainly been a struggle. He's posted an .882 save percentage and 3.40 GAA alongside a 5-6-0 record. GM Don Waddell said that the 30-year-old would take some time off to mentally regroup. This should benefit him quite a bit and here's hoping he'll return mentally healthier.

Hurricanes' Scott Darling: Struggles continue in minors
Darling stopped just 22 of 28 shots in a 6-1 loss to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Friday.
This has truly been a forgettable season for the Hurricanes' former starting netminder. After clearing waivers and winding up at AHL Charlotte at the end of November, Darling was recalled for one game -- in which he allowed five goals in a 6-5 overtime loss to the Capitals on Dec. 14 -- and was promptly sent back down. Unfortunately, he has been no better with the Checkers, posting a 2-2-0 record, 3.42 GAA and .872 save percentage in his last five games. Looking ahead, unless there is an injury to either Petr Mrazek or Curtis McElhinney, it is highly unlikely you will see Darling back in the NHL anytime soon.

Darling will start Friday at home against Washington, Michael Smith of the Hurricanes' official site reports. The netminder hasn't played since Nov. 24.
Darling was recently recalled from AHL Charlotte, and Friday's start will be just his eighth of the season at the NHL level. The 29-year-old has posted a 3-1-0 record in five games with the Hurricanes' minor-league affiliate after being demoted earlier in the season. He faces a tall order in the Capitals who've scored 14 times in their past three games -- all wins.

It's been a rough season for Darling, and it's only getting worse. Darling is 0-3-0 with a .819 save percentage and a 4.26 GAA. Overall, he is 2-4-2 with a .884 save percentage and a 3.33 GAA in eight starts this season. Even desperate owners can't trust Darling at this point.

Darling is with AHL Charlotte having cleared waivers Friday, The Hockey News reports.
While there are a few NHL teams that could use a goalie like Darling for depth purposes, the fact remains that he's making $4.15 million annually through the 2020-21 season, and that's simply too much money for a guy who has posted an .889 save percentage through 50 games with the Hurricanes. It's safe to drop Darling in fantasy leagues since he was unable to find any suitors and there's no telling how long he could be stuck in the AHL.

Hurricanes' Scott Darling: Will be subjected to waivers
Darling will be waived by the Hurricanes on Thursday, Pierre LeBrun of TSN reports.
Darling's had his fair shake in Raleigh, but the goalie formerly with the Blackhawks posted a 15-25-8 record, 3.17 GAA and .889 save percentage over 47 starts and 50 total games with the Hurricanes. Darling is in the second year of a contract that pays him $4.15 million annually, and it's readily apparent that his production doesn't match the bankroll. It'll be interesting to see if the Flyers scoop up Darling after waiving Calvin Pickard and retooling their management team this week. Meanwhile, Curtis McElhinney and Petr Mrazek suddenly have better job security for the Hurricanes.

Hurricanes' Scott Darling: Relegated to backup role
Darling served as the backup goaltender for the third straight game Friday against the Panthers.
Darling hasn't started a game since allowing four goals on 24 shots in a 4-1 loss to the Blue Jackets on Nov. 17. Since then, the Hurricanes have won three in a row with Curtis McElhinney between the pipes, so it will be interesting to see how the team deploys Darling going forward. Looking ahead, the Canes play the second of back-to-back games Saturday against the Islanders, so Darling may be given a chance to redeem himself. Monitor closely.

Curtis McElhinney has rattled off three straight wins and seems to have supplanted Darling as the No. 1 goalie for the Hurricanes, but Petr Mrazek -- who reportedly will serve as the backup to Darling in the upcoming contest -- is suddenly in the picture as well after overcoming a lower-body injury. At any rate, Darling will try to slow an Islanders team that sports an 8-1-0 record within the Metropolitan Division and sits just one point behind the Hurricanes in the standings.

Hurricanes' Scott Darling: Jackets are his kryptonite
Darling made 20 saves in a 4-1 loss to Columbus on Saturday.
The Jackets' top line of Artemi Panarin, Pierre-Luc Dubois and Cam Atkinson were like kryptonite to Darling -- they accounted for nine points total, including three goals. He has done nothing to prove he has the ability to be a starting netminder in the NHL. Darling has allowed three or more goals in five of his six starts this season. Activate him at your own peril.
