Devils' Brian O'Neill: Assigned to AHL on Thursday
O'Neill was assigned to AHL Albany on Wednesday, Rich Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
With Travis Zajac (upper body) on the verge of returning to action, the Devils are no longer in need of O'Neill's services as a depth forward. The 27-year-old was a star in the AHL last season, racking up 80 points (22 goals, 58 assists) in just 71 games. His success in the AHL hasn't translated into success in the NHL, which is why O'Neill likely won't return to the big club unless New Jersey's depth at forward is once again tested by injury.

Devils C Brian O'Neill will make season debut Saturday vs. Capitals
Devils center Brian O'Neill will make his season debut Saturday against the Capitals, Rich Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
O'Neill, who was recently acquired by the Devils from the Kings in exchange for a conditional 2017 seventh-round pick, was an offensive force to be reckoned with in the AHL last season, posting an astounding 80 points (22 goals, 58 assists) in 71 games with AHL Manchester. Those totals were good enough to earn him AHL MVP honors for the 2014-15 campaign. He won't come close to that level of production in the NHL, but could still be a difference maker on the offensive end of the ice for the Devils.

Dealt to Devils
O'Neill was traded to the Devils in exchange for a conditional 2017 seventh round pick Tuesday, TSN's Bob McKenzie reports.O'Neill was almost able to secure a spot on the King's 23-man roster, but ultimately was unable to make the cut. The Kings will only receive a 2017 seventh round pick if the Devils re-sign O'Neill for the 2016-17 season, so they ultimately received very little in return for last year's AHL MVP. O'Neill was fantastic with AHL Manchester in 2014-15, racking up 8- points (22 goals, 58 assists) in 71 games with the team. The 27-year-old forward will likely be in the Devils' lineup for Friday's regular-season opener against the Jets, but his role with the team remains to be seen.... See More ... See Less
