Puempel signed a two-year contract with the Red Wings on Sunday.
Puempel was a restricted free agent, but now he's locked down for two more seasons. He spent last year dominating the minors with AHL Grand Rapids, scoring 22 goals and adding 32 assists through 57 games. However, the 25-year-old hasn't played an NHL game since the 2016-17 campaign, when he notched nine points in 27 games. He'll likely spend the season in minors again.

Puempel, a pending restricted free agent, received a qualifying offer from the Red Wings on Monday, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.
It's hardly a surprise that the Red Wings decided to qualify Puempel since they went out of their way to acquire him for defenseman Ryan Sproul last October. While he was limited to AHL action for the entire 2017-18 campaign, Puempel amassed 22 goals and 32 assists over 57 games for Grand Rapids. We view him as a valuable organizational depth option for the Winged Wheel.

Red Wings' Matt Puempel: Dealt to Detroit
Puempel was traded to the Red Wings by the Rangers in exchange for defenseman Ryan Sproul.
According to Bob McKenzie of TSN the Red Wings also traded forward Riley Sheahan and a 2018 fifth-round draft pick to the Penguins for winger Scott Wilson and a third-round pick next year. This is all a part of Detroit general manager Ken Holland's master plan to find cap room for Andreas Athanasiou, who just ended a lengthy contract holdout and signed for one year and $1.3875 million. Both Puempel and Sproul were in the minors when these transactions went through.

Puempel said he wants "to play harder, be more physical" this season, which includes fighting more, the New York Post reports.
The 24-year-old forward suffered a pair of concussions last season, which he said prevented him from dropping the gloves much last season, but Puempel liked to mix it up in the AHL, and he fought the Devils' Nick Lappin in Wednesday's preseason game. That approach should net him some more PIM this season, but despite Puempel's first-round pedigree and minor-league success, he's never been able to win himself a significant NHL role, resulting in last season's nine points (in 40 games) representing his career high to this point.

Puempel agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Rangers on Wednesday, Brett Cyrgalis of the New York Post reports.
Puempel's deal will help New York meet the forward exposure requirements for the Vegas expansion draft, although considering he managed a mere nine points in his 40 appearances this season, it seems unlikely that the 24-year-old will be selected by the Golden Knights. Until the winger can secure regular minutes, he will continue to be a bottom-end fantasy option.

It took Puempel 9:53 of ice time to register those three shots. He has suited up in three of the past four games for the Rangers, recording one assist in the process. The 24-year-old has registered nine points (six goals, three assists) in 39 games -- 26 with New York, 13 with Ottawa -- and all nine have come with the Rangers while he's served as added depth on their fourth line.

Puempel suited up for the first time in five games Thursday, skating 7:58 without a shot or a point in a loss to the Islanders.
His only marks on the stat sheet were a blocked shot and a minus-1 rating. Puempel's long since recovered from his concussion, but the Rangers have little room for him in the lineup, leaving him in the press box most nights; the only reason he was in Thursday was that Pavel Buchnevich traded places with him. It won't be surprising if Puempel goes back to being a healthy scratch when the Rangers are next in action Sunday versus Washington.

Puempel (concussion) has been cleared to play, but won't suit up for Sunday's showdown in Detroit, Steve Zipay of Newsday reports. Additionally, Puempel is no longer listed on injured reserve, per the NHL's official media site.
While Puempel appears destined to watch Sunday's game from the press box, his removal from IR suggests that the team may be ready to bring him back for Monday's game against the Kings after an eight-game absence. However, keep in mind that concussions are notoriously tricky to come back from, and the young winger has already suffered two this season, so it's hard to pin down exactly when he'll come back.

Puempel (concussion) will stay back in New York as the team travels to face the Maple Leafs.
As expected, Puempel did join the team for practice Wednesday, but will need some more time to fully recover. Additionally, the winger will need to be activated off injured reserve before he can suit back up. Since being claimed off waivers from Ottawa, the 23-year-old has missed more games (11) than he has played in (7). Injury woes aside, Puempel has fared significantly better with the Rangers, as he has tallied five goals and one helper in 13 outings.

Rangers' Matt Puempel: Expected to practice Wednesday
Coach Alain Vigneault said he expects Puempel (concussion) back at practice Wednesday, the New York Daily News reports.
That's assuming he has no setbacks, but Puempel seems to be coming along well, as he's been skating prior to practice along with the also-concussed Marc Staal. However, with the Rangers getting a raft of their top forwards back from injury -- Rick Nash and Pavel Buchnevich just returned at the end of last week, and Mika Zibanejad will be back Tuesday -- it's questionable how Puempel will fit into the lineup even when he's healthy enough to play.

Given that Puempel continues to be hampered by concussions with no timetable for his return, his placement on IR is a no-brainer. Puempel has already missed five games due to a concussion this season, so the Rangers will undoubtedly take a highly-cautious approach with the young winger's recovery. Rangers' Matt Puempel: Astounds with power-play hat trick
Puempel scored a hat trick of power-play goals in Thursday's 6-3 win over Arizona.
He opened the scoring just 2:24 into the game with a centering pass that deflected off a Coyotes defender's stick and into the net; the 23-year-old snuck in the hat-trick-completing goal on a perfect deflection of his own with only 17 seconds remaining, capping off a startling performance from a guy who had only six career goals coming in. All that damage came in just 12:20 of ice time; with the Rangers' depth on the wings, it's hard to imagine Puempel finding his way into more minutes than that except in case of an injury.

Puempel will slot back into a bottom-six role Saturday after missing five games due to a concussion, skating with Marek Hrivik and Michael Grabner on the Rangers' fourth line. The Rangers boast the league's second-best offense behind the Penguins, and yet the gritty Puempel has a minus-5 rating without any points in 13 games this season -- that tells you all there is to know about his limited role and lack of fantasy value.

Puempel remains on injured reserve with a concussion, but being healthy enough to travel should certainly be considered a good sign that he's nearing a return. The winger has one goal and three hits in his six outings since being claimed off waivers by New York. He's a grinder who can certainly help an organization win, but Puempel currently doesn't offer much in terms of fantasy value even when healthy.
