Valiev put pen to paper on a one-year, two-way deal with Calgary on Tuesday.
Valiev hasn't seen action in the NHL since 2017-18, spending all of the previous campaign in the minors with the Heat. In 57 contests, the 24-year-old notched four goals and 17 helpers. The blueliner will be hard-pressed to secure a spot on the 23-man roster for Opening Night versus Colorado on Oct. 3.

Valiev was promoted from AHL Stockton on Wednesday as part of the Flames' Black Aces call-ups.
Valiev failed to earn a call-up during the season, instead spending the entire campaign with the Heat where he racked up four goals, 17 helpers and 51 PIM in 57 outings. The 23-year-old blueliner will be a restricted free agent this offseason and might not warrant an offer sheet from the club given how little he has been utilized in the NHL.

Valiev was demoted to AHL Stockton on Saturday, TSN reports.
Valiev has yet to break into an NHL game for the Flames this season. In the minors, the blueliner tallied one goal, 11 helpers and 26 PIM in 36 contests. The 23-year-old will need to make an impact during training camp next fall if he wants to secure a permanent spot on the 23-man roster.

Flames' Rinat Valiev: Brought up to big club
The Flames recalled Valiev from AHL Stockton on Saturday, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960 The Fan reports.
Travis Hamonic is currently dealing with an upper-body injury, so Valiev will join the big club as an insurance policy in case Hamonic is unable to go Sunday against Carolina. The Russian blueliner has notched one goal and 12 points in 36 appearances this season.

Flames' Rinat Valiev: Back down to Stockton
Valiev was reassigned to AHL Stockton on Monday.
Valiev was promoted to provide depth on defense in the wake of Mark Giordano's two-game suspension. With the Flames set to welcome their captain back Wednesday the time was right to send the youngster back down to the minors. In 20 games with AHL Stockton, the 23-year-old has three assists and carries a minus-4 rating.

Valiev -- along with Matt Taormina -- was acquired by the Flames from the Canadiens in a swap for Brett Kulak.
Vailev cleared waivers prior to being traded which clears the way for him to report to AHL Stockton, where he figures to spend the bulk of the upcoming season. The Russian has just 12 games of NHL experience and could earn a call-up or two this season.

Canadiens' Rinat Valiev: Placed on waivers
Valiev was placed on waivers by the Canadiens on Tuesday, Stu Cowan of the Montreal Gazette reports.
Valiev played just two games for Montreal after he was acquired from Toronto in February. He was positioned to play out the final six weeks of the season, but a lower-body injury ended that experiment. Without the seasoning those six weeks may have given him, Valiev is likely headed back to the AHL to start the 2018-19 campaign. He will open the season with Laval if he clears waivers.

Canadiens' Rinat Valiev: Agrees to one-year, two-way contract renewal
Valiev and the Canadiens agreed to terms on a one-year, two-way contract extension Thursday.
The two-way aspect of this deal gives the Habs roster some salary cap flexibility in case Valiev needs to refine his game in the AHL. A left-shooting rearguard, Valiev was acquired by Montreal in the deal that saw Tomas Plekanec wind up in Toronto last February. Valiev holds promise as a 2014 third-round draft pick, but he'll need to play more before fantasy owners can take him seriously. To date, he's only appeared in 12 games and has been held without a point in that span.

The 22-year-old defenseman has been used sparingly at the highest level since being acquired from Toronto at the trade deadline; we're talking two games and 11:49 of average ice time, amounting to a "cup of coffee" in sports parlance. He must be healthy, though, as he needed to be medically cleared in order to wind up with the team's top developmental affiliate.

It's fun watching players suit up against their former team, but it appears Valiev -- who was traded from the Maple Leafs in the Tomas Plekanec deal -- will miss his fifth consecutive game. This probably won't cause a stir in the fantasy realm, as the defenseman is just getting started on his NHL career and doesn't receive enough playing time even when healthy to warrant a look in virtual settings.

This will be the second game in a row that Valiev has missed. However, he's hardly made enough impact for the Canadiens to feel his absence too badly. The 22-year-old has spent most of the season in the AHL and has played in only two games with Montreal. Valiev only has until Tuesday to get healthy for the Habs' next contest, so he may be in line to miss another one.
