Ryan Kuffner: Won't be qualified
Kuffner won't receive a qualifying offer from the Oilers, so he'll hit the market as an unrestricted free agent Friday.
Kuffner was essentially a throw-in in the deal that sent Andreas Athanasiou to the Oilers in exchange for Sam Gagner and a pair of picks, and he clearly was never going to be a part of Edmonton's plans for the future. He does, however, have 10 games of NHL experience and 36 games of AHL experience, so he shouldn't have too much trouble finding a minor-league contract for the 2020-21 campaign.

Oilers' Ryan Kuffner: Packaged in Athanasiou deal
The Oilers acquired Kuffner and Andreas Athanasiou from Detroit for Sam Gagner, a 2020 second-round pick and a 2021 second-round pick Monday.
The Oilers gave up a pair of high draft picks to bring in Athanasiou, so getting Kuffner helps bolster their prospect corps. The 23-year-old winger was outstanding for Princeton University, racking up 22 goals and 22 assists over 31 games in his senior season (2018-19). It hasn't translated to the pro level yet, however, as he has just nine points over 32 contests with AHL Grand Rapids this year, so expect Kuffner to report to AHL Bakersfield and continue his development.

Red Wings' Ryan Kuffner: Back in AHL
Kuffner was reassigned to AHL Grand Rapids on Tuesday.
The Red Wings have activated burner Andreas Athanasiou from injured reserve, so Kuffner heads back to the minor league less than 24 hours after his initial call-up. A 23-year-old prospect, Kuffner scored in his season debut with the Griffins last Saturday.

Red Wings' Ryan Kuffner: Promoted from AHL
Kuffner was promoted from AHL Grand Rapids on Monday.
Kuffner was scoreless in his first 10 NHL contests last season after a very successful four-year collegiate career with Princeton. The Red Wings are currently riddled with injuries throughout the lineup, so the 23-year-old winger could see some bottom-six time during this NHL stint.

Red Wings' Ryan Kuffner: Gets on board against Pens
Kuffner found the back of the net in Wednesday's 4-2 road loss to the Penguins.
The Red Wings featured the Princeton product in early April, when the team was rapidly eliminated from playoff contention. He struggled over a 10-game span, having been held pointless with a minus-4 rating. Still, it would be careless to write off the 23-year-old prospect based on the small sample, especially since he racked up 75 goals and 77 assists over 132 games of his collegiate career. Keep him in mind for future fantasy seasons.

Red Wings' Ryan Kuffner: Finds ultimate challenge in NHL
Kuffner -- who burst onto the hockey scene with Princeton and debuted for the Red Wings this season -- ended up with a minus-4 rating and failed to crack the scoresheet through his first 10 NHL games.
At this point, Kuffner shouldn't get too caught up in the numbers game. The 22-year-old produced 44 points (22 goals, 22 assists) through 31 games with Princeton, and only the top college prospects earn that late-season cup of coffee with the big club. Kuffner will compete for an Opening Night roster spot with the Wings in the fall, as he has another year on his entry-level contract, but Evgeny Svechnikov (knee) would assuredly come before him -- provided injuries cease to be a concern.
