  • Blues' Alexander Steen: Announces retirement

Steen announced his retirement Thursday due to a lingering back injury.

Steen was selected by the Maple Leafs with the 24th overall pick back in the 2002 NHL Draft. The veteran winger spent four years playing for Toronto before being traded to St. Louis on Nov. 24, 2008. Steen spent the next 12 years with the Blues, racking up a combined 245 goals and 377 assists, including 183 power-play points in 1018 career NHL contests. The 2019 Stanley Cup champion also added another 36 points in 91 postseason contests. With Steen likely headed for long-term injured reserve, the Blues will be allowed to exceed the cap by $5.75 million.

  • Blues' Alexander Steen: Won't play Friday

Steen (undisclosed) won't be available for Friday's Game 6 against the Canucks, Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic reports.

Steen's continued absence will test the Blues' depth up front, but it won't impact fantasy players, as the veteran forward has gone scoreless while averaging just 12:02 of ice time in four games this postseason. With Steen still on the shelf, Jordan Kyrou will likely hold on to a bottom-six role for Game 6.

  • Blues' Alexander Steen: Remains out Wednesday

Steen (undisclosed) did not take warmups and will not play in Wednesday's Game 5 versus the Canucks, Jim Thomas of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Steen will miss his third straight game and fourth in the last five. The 36-year-old forward remains day-to-day. An update on Steen's status should arrive prior to Friday's Game 6.

Steen (undisclosed) will not play in Sunday's Game 4 matchup with Vancouver, Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic reports.

  • Blues' Alexander Steen: Won't suit up Sunday

Steen (undisclosed) is not in the lineup for Sunday's Game 3 tilt with Vancouver, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.

Steen missed Game 1 with an undisclosed injury, so it's possible that his absence Sunday could be related to that. He'll be considered questionable for Monday's Game 4 contest until another update is available.

  • Blues' Alexander Steen: Quiet return

Steen (undisclosed) had two PIM and one hit in 8:59 of ice time during Friday's 4-3 loss to the Canucks in Game 2.

Steen missed one game with the injury. Fantasy managers won't pay the 36-year-old much mind -- he's produced six PIM, four hits and three blocked shots in four playoff contests so far in a limited, fourth-line role.

  • Blues' Alexander Steen: Suiting up Friday

Steen (undisclosed) will be in the lineup for Game 2 against the Canucks on Friday, Tom Timmermann of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Steen wasn't fit to play in Game 1 but he's ready to return to a bottom-six role for the Blues on Friday. During three round-robin games, the 36-year-old winger was held without a point while averaging 13:04 of ice time per contest.

  • Blues' Alexander Steen: Skates with team Friday

Steen (undisclosed) took part in the team's game-day skate Friday, Brendan Batchelor of Sportsnet 650 reports.

Steen has yet to provide much in terms of offensive production this postseason. In fact, the veteran winger is stuck in a 12-game pointless streak. Without a spot on the power play, the Winnipeg native should be considered a middling fantasy option at best.

  • Blues' Alexander Steen: Misses Game 1

Steen (undisclosed) did not play in Wednesday's Game 1 versus the Canucks. Head coach Craig Berube deemed Steen day-to-day in his postgame interview.

Steen's absence allowed Jacob de la Rose to enter the lineup Wednesday. It's unclear why Steen was unavailable. The 36-year-old's status for Friday's Game 2 is uncertain.

  • Blues' Alexander Steen: Good to go

Steen (undisclosed) is on the ice for Saturday's practice, Lou Korac of NHL.com reports.

Steen missed Wednesday's scrimmage and a pair of practices thereafter, but it looks like he's good to go ahead of Sunday's flight to Edmonton. The veteran forward notched 17 points in 55 games during the regular season.

  • Blues' Alexander Steen: Won't scrimmage Wednesday

Steen (undisclosed) isn't on the ice for Wednesday's intrasquad scrimmage, Tom Timmermann of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Steen hasn't missed any practices since training camp kicked off July 13, so it's possible he's simply taking a maintenance day Wednesday. The 36-year-old vet picked up seven goals and 17 points in 55 games during the regular season.

  • Blues' Alexander Steen: Opens scoring in win

Steen scored a goal and went plus-2 in Friday's 5-1 win over the Stars.

Steen picked up the second rebound off a Colton Parayko slap shot, and he fired it past an out-of-position Ben Bishop. The 35-year-old doesn't score a ton -- he has 17 points over 46 games -- but his depth and penalty-killing upside will be instrumental for the Blues to defend their title.

  • Blues' Alexander Steen: Sees regular usage in return

Steen (lower body) blocked three shots in 14:43 of ice time during Friday's 4-2 loss to the Oilers.

The winger had to leave the Blues' last game Tuesday versus the Flames, but he returned to his familiar third-line role against the Oilers. He remains at 15 points and has added 55 shots on goal and 33 blocks in 36 contests this season. The 35-year-old is set to appear in his 1,000th game Saturday in his hometown of Winnipeg.

  • Blues' Alexander Steen: Good to go Friday

Steen (lower body) will be available for Friday's clash with Edmonton.

Steen has been rolling of late, as he's racked up five goals and four helpers in his last nine outings. Despite the recent strong run of form, the winger will likely miss the 40-point mark for the second straight year, in part due to an ankle injury that cost him 16 games earlier in the year.

  • Blues' Alexander Steen: Should be ready Friday

Head coach Craig Berube said Steen (lower body) has "a very good chance" to play Friday versus the Oilers, Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Steen didn't play in the third period of Tuesday's win over the Flames, but this isn't expected to be an issue going forward. That's good news since Oskar Sundqvist (lower body) has been placed on IR and Mackenzie MacEachern's (lower body) status is uncertain. If Steen is indeed good to go, he'll continue to flank Robert Thomas on the third line. Steen has enjoyed an impressive January with five goals and four assists over 10 games.

  • Blues' Alexander Steen: Done early Tuesday

Steen has a lower-body injury and will not return to Tuesday's game against the Flames.

It's unclear how Steen got hurt, but it's clearly bad enough to rule him out for the third period. He scored a goal and blocked a shot in 8:43 before the injury. If Steen isn't available for Friday's game in Edmonton, the Blues will hope MacKenzie MacEachern (lower body) or Oskar Sundqvist (lower body) are able to take his place in the lineup.

  • Blues' Alexander Steen: Rakes in pair of points

Steen scored a goal and dished a power-play assist in Wednesday's 4-3 overtime loss to the Flyers.

Steen set up Justin Faulk's opening tally at 14:24 of the first period. In the third, Steen netted the equalizer at 13:39, helping the Blues earn one standings point. The 35-year-old has been hot in January with four goals and four helpers over his last seven games. Steen has just 14 points and a plus-14 rating through 32 contests this season, but his recent form makes him viable in DFS as a budget option.

  • Blues' Alexander Steen: Tallies third goal

Steen scored a goal and fired two shots on net in Monday's 4-1 win over the Ducks.

Steen has surged recently with three goals and four helpers over his last seven contests. The 35-year-old has only 12 points with a plus-13 rating in 31 games this season. He's no longer a top-six player, but the Blues are a deep team with scoring threats all over the lineup. With some recent success, Steen could be worth a look in deeper formats.

  • Blues' Alexander Steen: Finally breaks through offensively

Steen scored twice and added an assist in Thursday's 5-1 win over Buffalo. He had five shots and was plus-4.

Injury and lack of production have made it a miserable season for the 35-year-old winger, but he finally scored his first two goals of the season in the third period. Steen also assisted on Robert Thomas' opening goal, giving him a three-point night after he had entered the game with just eight assists in 28 games. Steen's offensive game has tapered off with age and Thursday's performance is likely more of a blip than a sign of things to come. Still, it was an encouraging performance for the veteran.
