Tomas Plekanec: Ends playing career
Plekanec announced the end of his playing career Saturday.
Plekanec scored a goal and two points in nine contests with Kladno of the Czech League this season before deciding to retire. Though the 40-year-old hasn't played in the NHL since 2018-19, he did amass 233 goals and 608 points in 1,001 career games at the top level, including 984 appearances with Montreal. At his height in 2009-10, Plekanec scored 25 goals and 70 points in 82 outings. He also appeared in 94 career playoff contests, scoring 18 goals and 53 points in that span.

Tomas Plekanec: Re-ups with Czech club
Plekanec signed a one-year contract extension with HC Kometa Brno (Czech) on Monday.
In 16 games last season, Plekanec notched seven helpers and 14 PIM, which was apparently enough for the club to want to bring him back for another year. At 36 years of age, the center is highly unlikely to make a return to the NHL and figures to close out his career overseas. Over the course of his 15-year career, Plekanec racked up 233 goals and 375 assists, including 64 power-play points, in 1,001 games primarily played with Montreal.

Tomas Plekanec: Signs with Czech club
Plekanec inked a deal with Czech side HC Kometa Brno for the remainder of the 2018-19 campaign, Frank Seravalli of TSN.ca reports.
When Plekanec was waived by the Habs, it was expected the veteran center would head overseas to extend his playing career. The 36-year-old returns to his homeland for the first time since the 2012-13 lockout year, in which he played 32 games for Rytiri Kladno. In 1,001 NHL contests, Plekanec racked up 233 goals, 375 assists and 543 PIM.

Tomas Plekanec: Hangs up NHL skates
Plekanec has called it a career in the NHL and will seek to play another year or two in the Czech Republic, Arpon Basu of The Athletic reports.
The veteran winger drew into just three games for the Canadiens this season and with his best days behind him, Plekanec will return home to finish out his career. The 36-year-old completes his NHL career with 233 goals and 375 assists over 1,001 games; he likely re-joined the Habs after a brief stint with the Maple Leafs last year in order to reach the 1,000-game milestone in a Montreal sweater.

Tomas Plekanec: Queued up for unconditional waivers
The Canadiens will place Plekanec (back) on unconditional waivers Saturday.
According to this report, Plekanec and the Habs have mutually agreed to cut ties, which is interesting because the veteran center rejoined the club near the trade deadline last season after a 17-game stint with the Maple Leafs. Plekanec will become an unrestricted free agent once his contract is officially purchased by the club.

Canadiens' Tomas Plekanec: Skates with team Saturday
Plekanec (back) participated in Saturday's morning skate, Stu Cowan of the Montreal Gazette reports.
Plekanec is on injured reserve and has missed the last seven games due to an ailing back. Coach Claude Julien said the injured center is feeling much better and will meet with doctors for an evaluation. Plekanec could be back on the active roster this coming week.

Canadiens' Tomas Plekanec: Will require IR stint
Plekanec (back) could miss several weeks of action, with Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports adding that the veteran center will be placed on injured reserve.
Plekanec, unfortunately, will be sidelined for an extended period of time, likely donning his patented turtlenecks as a spectator for at least the next 10 games. Once a can't-miss fantasy commodity, Plekanec added six goals and 20 assists between the Habs and Buds last season, but the penalty-killing specialist is undeniably past his prime as a 35-year-old pivot. It's probably safe to drop Pleks considering how deep the center position is in fantasy hockey.

Canadiens' Tomas Plekanec: Won't accompany team to Ottawa
Plekanec is dealing with a lower-back injury that will prohibit him from traveling to Ottawa for Saturday's game.
Plekanec logged a mere 10:46 of ice time in Wednesday's win over the Blues, but that was in line with his average through the first two games of the new season. He'll stay back and try to get into playing shape for Tuesday's home clash with the Flames.

Canadiens' Tomas Plekanec: Makes season debut
Plekanec was in the active lineup Saturday, centering the fourth line in a 4-3 shootout win over Pittsburgh. He had four shots, one hit and won four of eight faceoffs while finishing minus-1 over 8:44 of ice time.
Plekanec made his season debut Saturday, ostensibly to help the beleaguered Canadiens at the dot. Montreal entered the game last in the NHL, winning just 39.8 percent of its faceoffs. The 35-year-old Czech's next game, which could be Monday against Detroit at the Bell Centre, will be the 1,000th of his career.

Canadiens' Tomas Plekanec: Practices on fourth line
Plekanec skated on the fourth line at Friday's practice, Stu Cowan of the Montreal Gazette reports.
Plekanec, who's been a healthy scratch the first three games, took the spot of Matthew Peca, who went 1 for 6 on faceoffs Thursday and has won just 33.3 percent of his draws. Coach Claude Julien wouldn't confirm that Plekanec will be in the lineup Saturday night against Pittsburgh, but with the team winning just 38 percent of its faceoffs, it might be time for the 35-year-old veteran to get into the active lineup.

Canadiens' Tomas Plekanec: Sits out season opener
Plekanec was a healthy scratch for Wednesday's season opener against the Maple Leafs, Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette reports.
The soon-to-be 36-year-old Plekanec joined a fellow veteran, 30-year-old defenseman Karl Alzner, in the press box on opening night. The lineup emphasized youth and speed for a team that figures to be in rebuild mode all year. "You feel a little sympathy for the guys but, in the end, we have to do what's best for the team," said head coach Claude Julien. The youthful Habs held their own against the league's iron, losing 3-2 in overtime, but they won just 41 percent of the faceoffs. That could mean we see Plekanec, a career 50-percent winner at the dot, make his debut Saturday in Pittsburgh.

Canadiens' Tomas Plekanec: Finishes stint away from Habs
Plekanec will rejoin the Canadiens on a one-year deal worth $2.25 million, Pierre LeBrun of TSN reports.
Plekanec was shipped out to Toronto at the trade deadline last season under the final year of his previous contract. The veteran was pretty ineffective with his new club, as he managed a paltry two points in 17 regular-season outings -- though he did chip in a pair of goals and two helpers in seven postseason contests. Back with his preferred club, the center figures to slot into a bottom-six role behind Jonathan Drouin and Phillip Danault.

Maple Leafs' Tomas Plekanec: Will participate in World Championship
Plekanec is set to suit up for Team Czech Republic in the upcoming World Hockey Championship, Darren Dreger of TSN reports.
The 35-year-old forward scored six goals and 26 points this season across 77 games, 17 with Toronto and 60 with the Canadiens. It was the first time he ever appeared in an NHL game not donning a Montreal sweater and he's clearly well past his prime as those 26 points were a career low. Still, he'll be an important member of this Czech Republic squad in May.

Maple Leafs' Tomas Plekanec: Picks up two points in Game 6 win
Plekanec scored a goal and an assist in Monday's 3-1 win over the Bruins in Game 6.
The trade deadline acquisition has come up big for the Leafs, scoring two goals and four points in the last four games to help the club roar back from an 0-2 deficit and send the series to a deciding seventh game Wednesday in Boston. Plekanec now has 18 goals and 53 points in 93 career playoff games.

Maple Leafs' Tomas Plekanec: Lights lamp in Game 4 loss
Plekanec scored his team's lone goal in Thursday's 3-1 Game 4 loss to the Bruins.
Owners who turned to Plekanec in daily formats while Nazem Kadri was serving a three-game suspension were handsomely rewarded, as the veteran pivot thrived in a second-line role between speedsters Mitch Marner and Patrick Marleau, each of whom drew an assist on Plekanec's goal in this one. With Kadri due back for Game 5 in Boston, expect Plekanec to slide back down the depth chart.

Maple Leafs' Tomas Plekanec: Tallies first point of 2017-18 playoffs
Plekanec notched an assist -- his first point this postseason -- during Monday's Game 3 against the Bruins.
After two disastrous showings in Boston, Plekanec was charged with centering the team's second line in Game 3 with Nazem Kadri hit with a three-game ban. He turned in two shots on goal in and a plus-2 rating in addition to the assist and could earn an increased role moving forward as a result.

Maple Leafs' Tomas Plekanec: Centering best fourth line in NHL
Plekanec has been skating with rookies Kasperi Kapanen and Andreas Johnsson on the Leafs' fourth line. That trio was the Leafs' best line on Saturday night against Detroit.
While he hasn't scored in 11 games so far, Plekanec is centering what is arguably the NHL's best fourth line. The speed of the two rookies and their ability to press opposing defenders has improved Plekanec's CF%/60 significantly. It's only a matter of time before the pivot earns his first point in blue and white. But unfortunately, that's not good enough for fantasy rosters.
