Alex Burrows: Announces retirement
Burrows has decided to retire after 13 NHL seasons, NHLPA.com reports.
Burrows hangs up his skates having accumulated 409 points (205 goals, 204 assists) in 913 career contests between the Canucks and Senators. While few hockey pundits (if any) ever doubted his talent, Burrows occasionally tested the limits of the league's Department of Player Safety. According to Spotrac.com, Burrows forfeited $214,488 in fines and lost out on 10 games due to suspension over the course of his career -- most of the infractions resulted from roughing incidents. A separate report from the Canadiens notes that Burrows will join AHL Laval as an assistant coach.

Alex Burrows: Buyout proccess underway for winger
The Senators placed Burrows on unconditional waivers Tuesday to initiate a contract buyout, Chris Johnston of Sportsnet reports.
Burrows was a mess last season, as he only mustered six goals and eight helpers to counter a minus-8 rating over 71 games. Furthermore, he let down his fantasy owners in a big way by kneeing New Jersey's Taylor Hall last February and consequently getting hit with a 10-game ban. By eating Burrows' contract, the Senators will save $833,333 over the next two years.

Senators' Alex Burrows: Produces worst season in a decade
Burrows' 2017-18 campaign produced his lowest point total (14) since the 2006-07 season.
The 37-year-old may be feeling the effects of his age, since Burrows produced this dismal point total despite a consistent power-play role. Burrows brings veteran leadership to the table, and he's still locked up with the Senators for one more year at $2.5 million, but his team would surely like to see an uptick in production next season.

Burrows set up Max McCormick's first-period goal and iced the game with an empty-netter in a 4-2 win over Buffalo on Monday.
Burrows has now matched the goal total he put up for the Senators in 2016-17, with six on the year. The problem is he only played 20 games with Ottawa last year after a trade, as opposed to the 69 games he's played in a Senators sweater this year. Few have been a better symbol of Ottawa's fall from grace this year, and his scoring comes so infrequently that he doesn't belong on rosters outside the deepest of leagues.

Burrows scored a goal on two shots while adding a hit, a blocked shot and a plus-1 rating in Saturday's 2-1 loss to the Blue Jackets.
The former 35-goal scorer has only lit the lamp five times in 60 games this season, and Burrows is little more than a depth forward at this stage of his career. He's got one more year left on his contract, but there's no guarantee he'll find a role in the NHL in 2018-19.

Burrows has fully served his 10-game suspension for repeatedly kneeing Devils forward Taylor Hall in a Feb. 6 contest. The 36-year-old winger will be eligible to play in Friday night's road game against the Golden Knights.
You're not likely to see many fantasy owners (if any at all) rushing to activate Burrows. He's having a tumultuous 2017-18 campaign comprised of eight points through 51 games. Burrows is averaging 1:26 of ice time on the man advantage, but Ottawa's power play is ranked 27th in the league, and he's mustered only a pair of points in that special teams spot.

Burrows, who was waived by the Senators on Sunday, will fully serve out his suspension (for kneeing New Jersey's Taylor Hall) by sitting out of Tuesday's game against the Capitals. The winger will remain in the NHL, reprising his fourth-line role upon returning, TSN 1200 Ottawa reports.
It appears that Burrows was waived for roster flexibility purposes, but he remains property of the Senators having cleared waivers. As the owner of just eight points through 51 games, the 36-year-old isn't rendered useful in many fantasy settings.

The 36-year-old forward has one game left to serve on his 10-game suspension for repeatedly kneeing New Jersey's Taylor Hall. With just eight points in 51 games this season, it's hard to imagine other teams were lining up trade offers for Burrows. In the event that he goes unclaimed, Ottawa will likely send him down to the AHL.

Burrows has decided not to appeal his 10-game suspension for repeatedly kneeing Taylor Hall in Tuesday's game against the Devils.
Burrows issued a statement about his actions from his team's most recent game. "The situation was one in which I recognize I let my emotions get the better of me, and it was a relief to see that Taylor Hall was not injured." While it's nice to see the winger express regret for his conduct, the fact of the matter is that he's dragging a slumping team down even further by getting banned for the remainder of the month. There probably won't be many fantasy owners feeling the collateral damage, though, as Burrows' eight points through 51 games leave him off the map in most virtual settings anyway.

Senators' Alex Burrows: Receives 10-game ban
Burrows has been suspended for 10 games for his actions against Devils winger Taylor Hall on Tuesday.
Burrows wasn't pleased after taking a shot from Hall, but took his actions too far during the contest and has been suspended by the league as a result. The Senators will be without his services until March 2, barring a reduced suspension upon appeal. Unless multiple bodies return to action for Thursday's matchup against the Predators, Ottawa may be forced to recall reinforcements from the minors or roll with seven defensemen.

Based on the egregious actions from Burrows, it seems like the question isn't whether he'll be suspended, but how long of a ban is warranted. Either way, not many fantasy owners should be affected by the eventual ruling, as Burrows likely has low ownership rates in the first place as the owner of just eight points through 51 games.

Senators' Alex Burrows: Could face suspension
Burrows has been offered an in-person meeting with NHL Player Safety for jabbing his knee into Taylor Hall's head during a scrum, Bob McKenzie of TSN reports.
Burrows has always gotten his nose dirty as a bottom-six player, but the last time he was suspended was 2003 -- when he was handed a three-game ban for abusing the officials in the East Coast Hockey League. Because of the nature of this play, it's tough to tell whether this will be just a fine or a suspension, since it's difficult to prove intent. The Senators next game is Thursday against Nashville, so expect a verdict before that.

Senators' Alex Burrows: Seeing power-play time
Burrows has only notched one assist in 10 games since the start of 2017-18, but has been seeing time on the first power-play unit lately.
After reeling off 31 points (15 goals, 16 assists) last season in Vancouver and Ottawa, Burrows has seen his pace fall sharply in 2017-18, only totaling seven points (three goals, four assists) in 46 games. However, with Ottawa struggling for a spark, Burrows was inserted into the first power-play line -- skating for 2:41 of ice time total over the last three games -- but has yet to record a point on the man advantage. While it's unclear if the experiment by head coach Guy Boucher will continue, the 36-year-old certainly provides a strong veteran presence, and should be able to pick up some extra points if the lines aren't changed following the All-Star break.

Senators' Alex Burrows: Hit with $5,000 fine
Burrows has been assessed a $5,000 fine for roughing Sharks defenseman Dylan DeMelo in Friday night's game.
The gritty winger was tossed from the contest after picking up a game misconduct penalty as part of a scrum with Demelo, who sustained a scratched cornea when Burrows hit him with his stick. Burrows' 19 PIM may have helped out select fantasy owners, but that category is used less often these days given that owners are filling rosters with speedy scorers rather than enforcer types. Burrows isn't necessarily a goon, but long gone are his days of notching 50-plus points per season. He's only recorded three goals and three assists through 28 games this year.

Senators' Alex Burrows: Frustration boils over in loss
Burrows picked up 19 PIM in Saturday's loss to the Sharks.
Burrows picked up a slew of penalties towards the end of the game and was ejected late in the third period. The feisty forward appeared to use his stick to butt-end and injure Sharks blueliner Dylan DeMelo, but it's unlikely he'll receive supplementary discipline. The Senators suffered another loss Saturday and Burrows let out some frustration in the process. Burrows (ankle) will be ready when training camp begins Thursday.
The former Canuck was forced to miss the final four games of Ottawa's Eastern Conference finals defeat at the hands of the Penguins, but he was able to make a full recovery in the offseason. Burrows was rejuvenated once traded to the Sens in the middle of the 2016-17 campaign, scoring six goals and 11 points in 20 games after recording just four goals and 10 points in 33 games for Vancouver. It may be too much to expect a 40-point season from Burrows in 2017-18, but he should establish himself as a regular in the lineup and finish with around 30 points.
