Higgins -- who hasn't played since the 2015-16 season -- saw action in 711 games for Montreal, New York, Calgary, Florida, and Vancouver over the course of his 12-year NHL career. Along the way, the winger notched 165 goals and 168 assists, including 10 short-handed markers.

The 33-year-old winger put up a negative 14 plus-minus in 33 games with Vancouver last year, and only scored four points. He is past his prime, but another team could pick him up to add some organizational depth.

Flames' Chris Higgins: Signs professional tryout agreement with Flames
Higgins will join Calgary on a professional tryout agreement, as announced Tuesday.
Higgins had a disappointing 2015-16 campaign that included four points in 33 contests, which led the Canucks to buy him out of his contract and cause him to be a free agent. Given those types of numbers, it should come as no surprise the Flames weren't willing to sign the 33-year-old outright. Still, Higgins does have a shot at making the Opening Night roster when you consider the lack of quality depth on the wings for Calgary, but fantasy owners should probably look elsewhere for discounted value this upcoming season.

Higgins cleared waivers Tuesday, Elliotte Friedman of Hockey Night in Canada reports.
The Canucks waived Higgins for the purpose of buying out his contract. His offensive production has steadily declined over the years, and he was limited to 33 games last season with various injuries getting in the way. Higgins wears that leadership hat just as well off the ice as he does on it, and it doesn't bode well for the 12-year veteran that he went unclaimed after getting placed on unconditional waivers.

Higgins has been waived by the Canucks in order to buy him out of his contract, Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province reports.
Higgins saw his role drastically decrease over the course of the 2015-16 campaign, so it comes as little surprise that the organization has decided to move in a different direction. By buying out the 33-year-old, Vancouver will save an estimated $833,333 in cap space for next season. It remains unclear if the 33-year-old will find a landing spot, but he could be a depth addition for a team in need of veteran leadership,although fantasy owners still holding on to him should consider waiving him as well.

Higgins has one year remaining on his four-year, $10 million contract. If the Canucks execute a buyout on the 33-year-old, it will only cost $833,333 against the cap in each of the next two seasons. After landing on waivers last January, Higgins ended up clearing and stayed in the Canucks organization. Unfortunately, he is often injured. In 2015-16, Higgins was limited to 33 games with his numbers -- three goals, one assist and a minus-14 rating -- rendering him useless in the majority of fantasy leagues.

Higgins tallied a short-handed goal on three shots in 13:42 of ice time during Tuesday's 4-1 loss to the Sharks.
Higgins scored his first goal since Nov. 8, a span of 27 games played. Since that last goal, he's been bounced back and forth from AHL Utica, and thus hasn't been able to gather much traction this season. Despite playing in 77 games last season, the 32-year-old has only played 30 times this season, with just four points and a -14 rating in those 30 games.

Higgins played in 22 games in the AHL after being waived by the Canucks in mid-January where he registered nine goals and four helpers. The veteran was averaging 14:03 in ice time per night prior to his reassignment and is likely to see similar numbers in his return to the majors.

Higgins is on his way to AHL Utica after clearing waivers Wednesday, Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province reports.
The organization has already expressed their intent to trade Higgins in an effort to create opportunities for young players, so it appears that they will continue to do so with Higgins in the minors. It's fairly surprising that Higgins decided to report to Utica, as there was speculation that Higgins would seek to have his contract terminated if the Canucks couldn't find a trade partner. If Higgins is to find a new landing spot, he could still provide some fantasy value.
