Kyle Brodziak: Dished to Detroit
The Oilers traded Brodziak and a conditional draft pick to Detroit in exchange for Mike Green on Sunday.
This is simply a cap move for the Oilers to facilitate the acquisition of Mike Green. Brodziak announced his retirement prior to the 2019-20 season due to back injuries. His contract expires at the end of this season.

Kyle Brodziak: Hanging up skates
Brodziak (back) has decided to retire, Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal reports.
Brodziak was originally selected by the Oilers in the seventh round of the 2003 NHL Draft. The 35-year-old had one season remaining on his two-year deal with Edmonton and was in jeopardy of missing the 2019-20 campaign with a serious back injury. Brodziak will retire having racked up 129 goals and 296 points over a 14-season career.

Brodziak is expected to be placed on long-term injured reserve for the entirety of the 2019-20 campaign due to back issues, Mark Spector of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Brodziak missed the final four games of the 2018-19 campaign due to an undisclosed injury, but at this point it's safe to assume that his back issues are what kept him sidelined. The 35-year-old pivot has one year remaining on his two-year deal with the Oilers, so if he does in fact land on LTIR for the duration of the upcoming season, he'll almost certainly hang up his skates ahead of the 2020-21 campaign. If that ends up being the case, Brodziak will retire having racked up 129 goals and 296 points in a career that spanned 14 seasons.

That's a wrap on Brodziak's 2018-19 campaign, with the traditional bottom-six pivot producing six goals and three assists over 70 games. While there are hundreds of NHL players with more impressive attacking-zone totals, Brodziak actually performed at a decent clip considering he was only deployed for 11:42 of average ice time.

Brodziak's fifth goal of the season was the game-winner in a 4-3 victory over the Sabres on Monday.
The goal came with only five seconds left in the second period, and it was enough to make the Sabres swap Linus Ullmark out in favor of Carter Hutton to start the third period. Brodziak went 19 games without a goal and 15 skates without a point prior to his tally Monday. The 34-year-old center has been mired on the fourth line in his first season of his second stint with the Oilers.

Still, Brodziak was a dominant force on the ice. Nice night, but it's just a moment in time. He's more valuable on the ice as a penalty killer than he is in fantasy.

The 34-year-old center is coming off a strong season with St. Louis, netting 10 goals and 33 points in 81 games. Brodziak will provide some needed depth for Edmonton, likely centering a bottom-six line behind Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Drafted by the Oilers in the seventh round of the 2003 NHL Draft, the 6-foot-2 Brodziak scored 26 goals and 59 points in 175 games during his first run with Edmonton.

There's probably value in taking Brodziak with a late-round fantasy pick this fall, but be forewarned that he's cemented in a bottom-six role, where it's generally difficult to stay productive offensively.
