Niklas Kronwall: Calling it a career
Kronwall announced Tuesday that he would end his playing career and join the Red Wings front office.
Kronwall spent 15 years in the NHL, all with the Red Wings, in which he racked up 83 goals and 349 assists in 953 contests. In addition to an Olympic gold medal for Sweden, the veteran defender helped Detroit win the Stanley Cup in 2008. Not exactly a fantasy stud in the offensive zone, the first-round pick was a stalwart on the blue line that was critical to the club's record 25 straight postseason appearances. Kronwall will join former teammate Steve Yzerman in an Advisor to the General Manager role.

Niklas Kronwall: Still mulling over future
Kronwall has yet to decide on his playing future, per Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.
The 38-year-old Swede officially became an unrestricted free agent Monday, but he previously hinted that he wants to be a Red Wing for life, so if the tough-as-nails blueliner does decide to continue his career, expect another short-term deal with the Wings. He's posted 83 goals and 349 assists over 953 career contests.

Kronwall notched two helpers, one on the power play, in a 6-3 win over the Bruins on Sunday.
Kronwall has five assists over his last six games, adding 11 blocked shots in that span. However, he hasn't fired a shot on goal since March 7. Obviously, it's hard to score if you can find the target. Kronwall is up to 26 points (three tallies, 23 helpers) in 76 outings.

Kronwall's signed three contracts exclusively with Detroit over parts of 15 seasons, with the Swede's name having become synonymous with jarring hits. The Wings ideally would be resting him on occasion, knowing he's been playing with a permanently damaged left knee, but a host of injuries to other defensemen in Motown have scrapped such plans. As a result, Kronwall has appeared in 57 of a possible 60 games in 2018-19; an undisclosed injury delayed his season debut, though he's been a lineup mainstay ever since. Don't expect the 38-year-old to be traded since Kronwall has expressed interest in staying put, and GM Ken Holland values the leadership that the veteran brings to the table.

Kronwall registered a power-play assist in Friday's 4-2 loss to the Jets.
Kronwall was the primary distributor on rookie defenseman Dennis Cholowski's third-period snipe, but it was too little, too late for the Wings at that point in the game. Kronwall recorded a power-play goal and an assist to pace the Red Wings to a 4-1 road win over the Hurricanes on Thursday.
Kronwall helped the Wings snap a four-game losing streak with his man-advantage rocket shot from the point that found the back of the net, as well as a secondary even-strength apple on a deflected goal courtesy of forward Frans Nielsen. Even at 37 years of age, Kronwall can still handle more than 18 minutes of ice time, but he hasn't been much of a factor on the power play since his latest goal counts as his first point in that key special teams situation this season -- for perspective, he had 15 points in that spot in 2017-18.

Red Wings' Niklas Kronwall: Not distracted by trade speculation
Kronwall hadn't entertained the thought of potentially being moved to a contending team for another chance at the Stanley Cup -- at least until Craig Custance of The Athletic asked him about it Monday.
Kronwall, 37, is cashing out the balance of a seven-year, $33.25 million contract. He's been with the Red Wings ever since they took him in the first round (29th overall) of the 2000 draft, and it would be strange to see him in any sweater other than the one with the Winged Wheel. Kronwall has three assists for his only points through 18 games this season, but with respect to his leadership qualities and status as a Stanley Cup winner (2008), the Swede still might appeal to certain clubs. There are only 10 teams eligible to acquire Kronwall in a trade, but it's entirely possible that he'll end up as a lifelong Wing.

Long gone are his days of consistently delivering bell-ringing hits, but the Swede actually had 15 of his 27 points on the power play in 2017-18. Kronwall can still get it done in the attacking zone, making him a sneaky DFS play.

Kronwall missed the first three regular-season games, and the Wings really need the veteran blueliner in the lineup seeing as how the team is winless with four rookie d-men collectively trying to hold down the fort in his absence, as well as filling the void of the team's lone power-play quarterback in Mike Green (illness). It sounds like Kronwall will be good to go against the Buds by his own declaration, but risk-averse fantasy owners will want to see Kronwall take warmups before activating him.

Kronwall (undisclosed) will not suit up Sunday in Los Angeles or Monday in Anaheim, Dana Wakiji of the Red Wings' official site reports.

Kronwall set up Filip Zadina on the power play for the rookie's first career (preseason) goal Friday. The Red Wings defeated the Bruins at home, 4-3 in overtime.
Zadina blasted a one-timer from the slot that brushed twine and Kronwall was credited with the primary apple. This should be the final season for the Swede, who's always going to be remembered for the bone-crushing hits that he delivered in his prime.

Kronwall could be rested on the second game of back-to-back sets this coming season, MLive.com reports.
The Red Wings reportedly have 13 back-to-back sequences on the docket this year, meaning the 37-year-old has virtually no chance of matching his 79-game output from 2017-18. Kronwall managed four goals and 23 assists to stay fantasy relevant in deeper settings last year but the Swede has had to rely on stem cell treatment and the club has been wanting to cut his playing time for a while. In the final year of his contract with a heavy cap hit of $4.75 million, this campaign should be the curtain call for the man who's been a fan favorite in Motown for his bone-crushing hits and playmaking acumen.
