Paul Martin: Announces retirement
Martin will hang up his skates, ending a 14-year NHL career, Michael Russo of The Athletic reports.
Martin was drafted by the Devils in the second round of the 2000 NHL Draft and proceeded to win back-to-back NCAA Championships with the University of Minnesota in 2002 and 2003. After six seasons with New Jersey, the defensive-minded blueliner joined the Penguins for five years and then spent his final three campaign with the Sharks. All told, the Minnesota native played in 870 NHL games in which he tallied 50 goals, 270 assists and another 46 points in 122 postseason outings.

Paul Martin: Waived for contract buyout
Martin was unconditionally waived Friday in order for the Sharks to buy out his contract.
Martin was a defensive liability against a quick Golden Knights team in Round 2 of the Stanley Cup playoffs. He finished with a minus-4 rating in that series, paving the way for Joakim Ryan -- who is 12 years his junior -- to make his postseason debut. By purchasing Martin's contract, the Sharks will save $1.416 million over the next two seasons.

Sharks' Paul Martin: May be bought out
Martin is being rumored as a top candidate for the Sharks to buy out, Kevin Kurz of The Athletic Bay Area reports.
Martin's lackadaisical play had drawn criticism all season, as he suited up for more AHL games (18) than NHL games (14), which is attributable to both injuries and being a healthy scratch. The 37-year-old blueliner was a healthy scratch for the final three games of the conference semifinals versus Vegas as well. Regardless, Martin's contract has one year remaining at $4.85 million, making him the third-highest paid defenseman on San Jose's roster. Per NHL rules, if Martin is bought out, the Sharks would take a cap hit of $1.62 million for each of the next two seasons.

Sharks' Paul Martin: Drawing ire of Sharks fans
Martin has skated to a minus-4 rating against the Golden Knights through three games of the conference semifinals.
Much to the dismay of Sharks fans, Vegas forward William Karlsson blew past Martin for the game-winning goal in overtime Monday night, and now Sharks fans are clamoring for Joakim Ryan to enter the picture. There's no question that the rookie is faster than the 37-year-old Martin, but then again, the latter has played in 122 postseason games while Ryan is still waiting for his playoff debut. Sharks coach Peter DeBoer has a tough decision to make for Game 4 with his team down 2-1 in the series.

Sharks' Paul Martin: Subbing in against Canucks
Martin will suit up against the Canucks playing alongside Brent Burns on Saturday, Kevin Kurz of The Athletic Bay Area reports.
Before you go rushing to plug Martin into daily lineups knowing that he'll play with one of the league's top offensive blueliners in Burns, consider that the former is unlikely to be included on the power play, nor is he expected to log heavy playing time in general as a reinforcement with Joakim Ryan sidelined by an upper-body injury.

Sharks' Paul Martin: Bumped up from minors
Martin was recalled from AHL San Jose on Monday.
Despite logging 81 games for the Sharks last season, the veteran hasn't found much of a role in 2017-18, and has only skated in three games for the big club. However, with Joel Ward (shoulder) and Tomas Hertl (shoulder) heading to injured reserve, Martin has found a way to squeak back on the roster. It would be surprising if the 36-year-old found himself consistently in the lineup, but with Brent Burns (undisclosed) hurting, he could play Tuesday against St. Louis if Burns doesn't go.

Martin -- who has appeared in just three games this season -- has been the subject of trade speculation. The blueliner missed much of the year due to injury, but has been a healthy scratch for the previous five contests. A heavy cap hit ($4.85 million) could hurt the ability of the Sharks to find a trade partner. If the veteran clears waivers, he will likely be reassigned to the minors in order to give him the opportunity to suit up and prove he can still compete.

Between a nagging ankle injury and an illness, Martin's only appeared in three games all season. So, what exactly have the Sharks been missing? The American blueliner is a proficient shot-blocker, having stepped in front of 251 shots since first throwing on a teal jersey in the 2015-16 campaign.
