Paul Martin: Announces retirement
Martin will hang up his skates, ending a 14-year NHL career, Michael Russo of The Athletic reports.
Martin was drafted by the Devils in the second round of the 2000 NHL Draft and proceeded to win back-to-back NCAA Championships with the University of Minnesota in 2002 and 2003. After six seasons with New Jersey, the defensive-minded blueliner joined the Penguins for five years and then spent his final three campaign with the Sharks. All told, the Minnesota native played in 870 NHL games in which he tallied 50 goals, 270 assists and another 46 points in 122 postseason outings.

Paul Martin: Waived for contract buyout
Martin was unconditionally waived Friday in order for the Sharks to buy out his contract.
Martin was a defensive liability against a quick Golden Knights team in Round 2 of the Stanley Cup playoffs. He finished with a minus-4 rating in that series, paving the way for Joakim Ryan -- who is 12 years his junior -- to make his postseason debut. By purchasing Martin's contract, the Sharks will save $1.416 million over the next two seasons.

Sharks' Paul Martin: May be bought out
Martin is being rumored as a top candidate for the Sharks to buy out, Kevin Kurz of The Athletic Bay Area reports.
Martin's lackadaisical play had drawn criticism all season, as he suited up for more AHL games (18) than NHL games (14), which is attributable to both injuries and being a healthy scratch. The 37-year-old blueliner was a healthy scratch for the final three games of the conference semifinals versus Vegas as well. Regardless, Martin's contract has one year remaining at $4.85 million, making him the third-highest paid defenseman on San Jose's roster. Per NHL rules, if Martin is bought out, the Sharks would take a cap hit of $1.62 million for each of the next two seasons.

Sharks' Paul Martin: Drawing ire of Sharks fans
Martin has skated to a minus-4 rating against the Golden Knights through three games of the conference semifinals.
Much to the dismay of Sharks fans, Vegas forward William Karlsson blew past Martin for the game-winning goal in overtime Monday night, and now Sharks fans are clamoring for Joakim Ryan to enter the picture. There's no question that the rookie is faster than the 37-year-old Martin, but then again, the latter has played in 122 postseason games while Ryan is still waiting for his playoff debut. Sharks coach Peter DeBoer has a tough decision to make for Game 4 with his team down 2-1 in the series.

Sharks' Paul Martin: Subbing in against Canucks
Martin will suit up against the Canucks playing alongside Brent Burns on Saturday, Kevin Kurz of The Athletic Bay Area reports.
Before you go rushing to plug Martin into daily lineups knowing that he'll play with one of the league's top offensive blueliners in Burns, consider that the former is unlikely to be included on the power play, nor is he expected to log heavy playing time in general as a reinforcement with Joakim Ryan sidelined by an upper-body injury.

Sharks' Paul Martin: Bumped up from minors
Martin was recalled from AHL San Jose on Monday.
Despite logging 81 games for the Sharks last season, the veteran hasn't found much of a role in 2017-18, and has only skated in three games for the big club. However, with Joel Ward (shoulder) and Tomas Hertl (shoulder) heading to injured reserve, Martin has found a way to squeak back on the roster. It would be surprising if the 36-year-old found himself consistently in the lineup, but with Brent Burns (undisclosed) hurting, he could play Tuesday against St. Louis if Burns doesn't go.

Sharks' Paul Martin: Placed on waivers
Martin was designated for waivers Monday, Pierre LeBrun of TSN reports.
Martin -- who has appeared in just three games this season -- has been the subject of trade speculation. The blueliner missed much of the year due to injury, but has been a healthy scratch for the previous five contests. A heavy cap hit ($4.85 million) could hurt the ability of the Sharks to find a trade partner. If the veteran clears waivers, he will likely be reassigned to the minors in order to give him the opportunity to suit up and prove he can still compete.

Sharks' Paul Martin: Watching from press box Tuesday
Martin will be a healthy scratch for Tuesday evening's road contest against the Canadiens, NHL.com reports.
Between a nagging ankle injury and an illness, Martin's only appeared in three games all season. So, what exactly have the Sharks been missing? The American blueliner is a proficient shot-blocker, having stepped in front of 251 shots since first throwing on a teal jersey in the 2015-16 campaign. His next chance to play will arrive Thursday in Toronto against the Maple Leafs.

Sharks' Paul Martin: Remains sidelined Thursday
Martin (illness) will not rejoin the lineup against the Flames on Thursday, per Kevin Kurz of The Athletic Bay Area.
Martin did take part in practice Thursday, according to Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News, so it's possible he is healthy and coach Peter Deboer simply doesn't want to mess with a formula that worked Saturday against Los Angeles. Injuries have limited the veteran to a mere three outings this season, with no clear timeline for when he might get back into the lineup.

Sharks' Paul Martin: Returns from conditioning
Martin (illness) returned to the Sharks on Satuday after spending two weeks with AHL San Jose on a conditioning stint, Kevin Kurz of The Athletic Bay Area reports.
Although Martin returned Saturday, he missed morning skate and still isn't expected to play later in the day against the Kings. The veteran blueliner has only played in three games for the Sharks this season, accruing zero points and a minus-4 rating. His next chance to crack the lineup will be Dec. 28 against the Flames.

Sharks' Paul Martin: Headed for conditioning stint
Martin (undisclosed) will be assigned to AHL San Jose for a conditioning stint, Kevin Kurz of The Athletic Bay Area reports.
The veteran blueliner missed 24 games due to an ankle injury before returning to action Thursday against the Hurricanes, so a move to the minors to play himself back into game shape makes sense. The Sharks should release another update on Martin's status once he's recalled to the big club.

Sharks' Paul Martin: Back in action Thursday
Martin (ankle) will rejoin the lineup for Thursday's game against the Hurricanes, Kevin Kurz of The Athletic reports.
Martin has missed all but the first two games of 2017-18 due to an ankle issue and another undisclosed ailment. However, the blueliner appears finally ready to retake his spot in the lineup. Even before the injury, Martin didn't see a ton of ice time as far as defensemen go and he wasn't a member of the man advantage. He did notch 26 points last season despite the limited power-play action, however, proving he can still provide some offensive output.

Sharks' Paul Martin: Expected to play Thursday
Martin (ankle) is slated to return to the lineup against the Hurricanes on Thursday, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Although Martin has not officially been activated off injured reserve, all signs indicate he will resume his spot on the blue line. The defenseman has missed the Sharks' previous 24 games, having appeared in just the opening two contests of the year. The Minnesota native will almost certainly be paired with Brent Burns as he has been throughout his time in San Jose.

Sharks' Paul Martin: Making positive strides
Martin (ankle) will sit out Monday's game in Washington but could play Thursday against Carolina, Tom Gulitti of NHL.com reports.
The report also stated that Martin would have returned to game action by now if not for having suffered a setback during an off-ice workout two weeks ago. San Jose will give additional updates ahead of Thursday's contest, and if he's able to go, longtime partner Brent Burns -- who's had all sorts of trouble putting the puck in the net this year -- will welcome him back with open arms.

Sharks' Paul Martin: Traveling with team
Martin (undisclosed) will travel with the Sharks on their upcoming road trip, Curtis Pashelka of The Mercury News reports.
San Jose is on the road for its next four games, and it seems unlikely the Sharks would bring Martin along if they didn't expect him to play at some point. The veteran has only played in two games this season due to a couple separate injury issues.

Sharks' Paul Martin: Not practicing after setback
Martin did not participate in Tuesday's practice after suffering a setback while rehabbing his ankle Kevin Kurz of The Athletic reports.
Martin appeared to be trending in the right direction after returning to the ice a few weeks ago, but his list of absences will continue to grow following the news of this setback. The veteran defenseman still apparently has no timetable for a return, so Joakim Ryan will likely continue to see time alongside Brent Burns on the first defensive pairing while Martin heals.

Sharks' Paul Martin: Dealing with new malady
Martin suffered a new, undisclosed injury while recovering from his ankle ailment, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports
Initial reports indicated Martin suffered a setback, rather than a new injury. On the positive side, the defenseman is not expected to require surgery for this latest condition, although when he might be cleared to return remains unclear. Brent Burns -- who has floundered without Martin -- figures to continue pairing up with Joakim Ryan for the time being.
