Oilers' Al Montoya: Designated for waivers
Montoya was waived Friday, with the Oilers intending to send him to AHL Bakersfield.
This clearly implies that Montoya has lost out on the job as primary backup to Cam Talbot in Edmonton. Finnish netminder Mikko Koskinen, who was in direct competition with Montoya, posted a lowly .855 save percentage in the preseason, but he showed incredible resolve in hanging on for a 3-2 overtime win over the Coyotes on Thursday. Montoya is suddenly not even worth handcuffing to Talbot in fantasy leagues.

Oilers' Al Montoya: Finishes campaign quietly
Montoya finished the 2017-18 season with a 4-3-2 record in Oil Country.
The first-round pick in 2004 (#6 overall) started the season in Montreal but was traded to Edmonton for a conditional fourth-round pick on Jan. 4. As a backup to Cam Talbot, Montoya finished this season with a 4-3-2 record, 3.21 GAA and a .893 save percentage. With one year left remaining on his contract in Oil Country, the American goalie will likely be battling for starts against Laurent Brossoit to start 2018-19.

Oilers' Al Montoya: Slated for backup duties
Montoya (undisclosed) will dress as Cam Talbot's backup for Thursday's game against the Canucks.
The Oilers don't have any back-to-back sets remaining on their schedule, so it's unclear if Montoya will make another start this season, but it's encouraging to see the veteran netminder healthy heading into the offseason. If he doesn't see any more action in 2017-18, Montoya will finish the campaign having compiled a 4-3-2 record while posting a subpar 3.42 GAA and .889 save percentage in 12 appearances.

Oilers' Al Montoya: Remains sidelined
Montoya (undisclosed) won't dress for Tuesday's game against Columbus.
Montoya will miss a second consecutive game Tuesday, and the Oilers have yet to release any details regarding the specific nature of his injury, or when he might be ready to return to action. Laurent Brossoit will continue to fill in for Montoya until he's given the green light to play.

Oilers' Al Montoya: Won't play Sunday
Montoya (undisclosed) is unable to play and won't be in the lineup Sunday against the Ducks.
Since this is the Oilers' second game of a back-to-back, the thought heading into Sunday was that Montoya would get the start. Instead, Laurent Brossoit has been called up on an emergency basis, and Cam Talbot will be in net again. There was no news given as to why Montoya can't play, but his first chance to return will be Tuesday against the Blue Jackets.

Oilers' Al Montoya: Draws Sunday start
Montoya will tend twine against the Lightning on Sunday, Bob Stauffer of the Oilers Radio Network reports.
Dependability has been an issue all season for Montoya, since he has a brutal .884 save percentage in 11 appearances, but he's mustered a reasonable 4-2-2 record. Given that he's squaring up to the league's top-ranked offense (3.5 goals per game), Montoya probably shouldn't be picked up for Sunday's eight-game slate.

Oilers' Al Montoya: Makes 37 saves in Sunday's loss
Montoya turned aside 37 shots in Sunday's 3-1 loss to the Lightning.
The three goals were actually the fewest Montoya has allowed in a start since Jan. 12. With Cam Talbot playing well lately and the Oilers well out of playoff contention, the club has little reason to give its 33-year-old backup goalie much action down the stretch.

Oilers' Al Montoya: Lets in four in loss
Montoya made 36 saves on 40 shots in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Sharks on Wednesday.
Montoya has played sparingly this season, and results like this are a reason why. In fact, the veteran netminder has allowed at least four goals in his last four starts. On the rare occasions where Montoya plays, a guy with an .884 save percentage is never going to excite fantasy owners.

Oilers' Al Montoya: Starting Wednesday
Montoya will be between the pipes for Wednesday's matchup with San Jose.
The 2004 first-round pick will be faced with a difficult opponent in the Sharks, who score an average of 2.88 goals per game and put five past the Red Wings in their last outing. Meanwhile, Montoya has struggled during his brief tenure as an Oiler, posting a 3.15 GAA and .894 save percentage in six outings. That being said, Edmonton's defensive corps will receive a boost Wednesday with Oscar Klefbom (undisclosed) returning to the lineup.

Oilers' Al Montoya: Emerges victorious against Ducks
Montoya stopped 41 of 46 shots in Sunday's shootout win over Anaheim.
It certainly wasn't a great showing from Montoya, as the veteran goaltender surrendered two late goals that allowed the Ducks to force overtime. While the 33-year-old made up for it with a great display in overtime and the shootout, Montoya has now given up at least four goals in three straight games and is sporting a .881 save percentage. The Edmonton backup owns a mediocre 4-2-1 record and shouldn't be relied on in most fantasy formats.

Oilers' Al Montoya: In goal against Ducks
Montoya will get the starting nod in Anaheim on Sunday, Jack Michaels of the Oilers Radio Network reports.
On the second night of back-to-back games for Edmonton, it's no surprise here that Montoya steps in for Cam Talbot. In his last start, the 33-year-old got rocked for five goals on just 29 shots in San Jose on Feb. 10. Anaheim's offense doesn't exactly pose a big threat, but it's hard to feel confident in Montoya right now.

Oilers' Al Montoya: Returns to backup role
Montoya (undisclosed) will return from injury and back up Cam Talbot on Thursday against Colorado.
Montoya took an awkward shot up high in practice last weekend and has been out since. The 33-year-old goaltender has made just five appearances since the start of 2018, and that trend will likely continue. He's not worth much in standard fantasy leagues.

Oilers' Al Montoya: Feeling effects of getting hit by puck
Montoya was injured in practice Friday, when he took a shot up high, Rob Tychkowski of the Edmonton Journal reports.
While Montoya was reportedly able to skate off on his own, the Oilers ended up recalling Laurent Brossoit from AHL Bakersfield under emergency conditions Saturday in the likely event that Montoya misses the road contest against the Coyotes.

Oilers' Al Montoya: Struggles in loss to Sharks
Montoya allowed five goals on 29 shots in Saturday's loss to the Sharks.
Montoya struggled in his last outing against Colorado and he didn't fare much better against San Jose. The 32-year-old falls to 3-2-1 on the season with an .879 save percentage. The Oilers' backup netminder hasn't shown anything this season to indicate he's worthy of a look in fantasy.

Oilers' Al Montoya: Will be put to work at Shark Tank
Montoya will defend the net from the Sharks in San Jose on Saturday.
Montoya seems to be enjoying life in Edmonton based on his 1.98 GAA and .921 save percentage through four appearances with the club following his trade from Montreal last month. The Big Cubano, as he's affectionately called, reportedly will be countered by the Sharks' primary backup netminder, Aaron Dell. Team Teal ranks 14th in the league in home scoring at 3.04 goals per game, which is an average rate stat, but Montoya should expect to see plenty of rubber with the Sharks positioned seventh overall by means of hoisting 34.9 shots per game in their own barn.

Oilers' Al Montoya: Gives up four in loss
Montoya made 27 saves on 31 shots in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Avalanche on Thursday.
Cam Talbot couldn't go because he was ill, which meant Montoya was called upon to tend the goal. It was only his eighth game of the season, and his fourth with the Oilers. The journeyman netminder has a .888 save percentage on the year, which pretty much rules him out for fantasy players.

Oilers' Al Montoya: Starting Thursday
Montoya will defend the net Thursday against the Avalanche, Derek Van Diest of the Edmonton Sun reports.
Montoya will receive the nod with Cam Talbot (illness) unavailable. Laurent Brossoit will dress as his backup, but Montoya certainly hopes the team doesn't need to use him. He's allowed one goal or fewer in each of his last three appearances with the Oilers, though two of them came in relief. Montoya has fared well since joining the Oilers, owning a 1.00 GAA and a .956 save percentage with his new club. He will attempt to stave off shots from a Colorado club that ranks fourth in the league in scoring (3.24 goals per game) this season.

Oilers' Al Montoya: Impressing in Oil Country
Oilers head coach Todd McLellan is gaining more confidence in Montoya, the Edmonton Sun reports.
Since being acquired via trade on Jan. 4, Montoya has a 1.00 GAA and .956 save percentage for Edmonton and the impressive numbers have not gone unnoticed. "He's been a good fit for our team," said head coach Todd McLellan. "In a backup role, he's been tremendous. He fits the team's personality. He's a lively guy on the bench. He practices hard." With Cam Talbot doubtful (illness) for Thursday's contest against Colorado, Montoya could potentially get the start. The American netminder is worth a speculative add in deep leagues as well as spot-start situations.

Oilers' Al Montoya: Not very busy in relief
Montoya allowed one goal on 12 shots in relief of an ineffective Cam Talbot during Tuesday's 5-0 loss to Buffalo.
Montoya played almost half of this contest but had to face just 12 shots after Talbot was chased off with four goals on 22 shots in less than 32 minutes. Edmonton appears ready to sink or float based on the play of last year's 42-game winner, so Montoya remains unlikely to pick up much action regardless of Talbot's level.

Oilers' Al Montoya: Rallies Oilers in relief
Montoya stopped all 19 shots he faced in relief of Cam Talbot during a 4-2 comeback victory over the Coyotes on Friday night.
Talbot gave up a pair of goals in the first four minutes of the game, and Todd McLellan immediately turned to Montoya. It was just his second appearance with the Oilers, but in those two games, he's turned aside 32 of 33 shots (.970 save percentage). Talbot has severely struggled this month, and with the Oilers nine points out of the final playoff spot, don't be surprised if Montoya begins seeing more playing time. The Oilers are in desperate need of points.
