John Mitchell: Hangs up skates
Mitchell will end his playing career after two seasons in the DEL.
Mitchell put up solid numbers in Germany, tallying 70 points in 80 contests with Nuremberg Thomas and Munich. Selected in the fifth round of the 2003 NHL Draft, the 34-year-old spent nine years in the NHL with the Maple Leafs, Rangers and Avalanche, in which he played in 548 games and notched 70 goals, 107 assists and 822 hits.

John Mitchell: Looking for new team
Mitchell's stint with Columbus was short-lived, as he was released from his tryout Wednesday, Aaron Portzline of The Athletic Cleveland reports.
Mitchell spent all of six days with the Blue Jackets, who may have just been trying to get insider information from his time with the rival Blackhawks. Unless he's willing to sign a minor-league deal or head overseas, the veteran center may have to consider retiring at this point.

John Mitchell: Released from tryout
The Blackhawks released Mitchell from his professional tryout agreement Thursday.
Mitchell was always considered a long shot to win a spot on Chicago's roster, so there's no sense in giving him preseason ice time that would be better spent on Chicago's crop of youngsters. The 32-year-old pivot may have played his last game in the NHL.

Blue Jackets' John Mitchell: Signs second professional tryout
Mitchell secured a professional tryout agreement with Columbus on Thursday -- his second such deal of the summer.
Just hours after being let go from his tryout with Chicago, Mitchell found a new home with the Blue Jackets. With injuries and inexperience down the middle of their lineup, it should come as little surprise that the veteran is being brougth for a look. If he can't secure a permanent deal in Columbus, it seems likely Mitchell will have played his last NHL game.

Blackhawks' John Mitchell: Set for PTO with Chicago
Mitchell will participate in Chicago's upcoming training camp after agreeing to a professional tryout agreement, Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
A five-time double-digit goal scorer at the NHL level, including from 2012-16 with Colorado, Mitchell had the worst season of his career in 2016-17, notching just three goals and seven points in 65 games. Unless Mitchell is able to rediscover his game over the course of training camp, it's nearly impossible to imagine him winning a roster spot over exciting young players like Tanner Kero and Vinnie Hinostroza.

Avalanche's John Mitchell: Posts first multi-point effort in 63 games
Mitchell contributed a goal and an assist in Tuesday's 4-2 loss to the Blues.
Mitchell opened the scoring 5:32 in with his third goal in 63 appearances, and added his fourth helper on a Mark Barberio tally in the third period. This was the first multi-point effort of the season for the 32-year-old center, who has declined significantly after potting double-digit goals in each of his first four campaigns in Colorado.

Avalanche's John Mitchell: Adds assist in Friday's victory
Mitchell picked up his first assist of the season in Friday's 2-1 overtime win against the Penguins.
The veteran has produced nothing on offense, and the bottom-six forward should be avoided in even the deepest of fantasy pools at this point. His only redeeming qualities at this point are his hits (65) and blocked shots (34).

Avalanche's John Mitchell: No points in last 20 games
Mitchell has gone 20 games without a point and has just a lone goal on the season.
Even though Mitchell is a bottom-six forward, the fact that he only has a single point in 40 games after producing 20-plus in each of the last four seasons is rather ludicrous. Then again, things have been a disaster all year for the Avs, and the veteran's average ice time is down over three full minutes from last year (12:08 vs. 15:15). All things considered, it's pretty much a no-brainer to steer clear of the 32-year-old at this point in his career.

Avalanche's John Mitchell: Mired in 14-game point drought
Mitchell only has one point in 34 games this season and has averaged just 12:30 of ice time, his lowest in five years with the team.
The 31-year-old's lone point -- a goal -- came 14 games ago, so to say it's been a down year for the depth forward would be a gross understatement. Despite being a bottom-six guy, Mitchell is usually good for 20 to 30 points and, as such, usually maintains some fantasy value in deeper formats since he also racks up a few hits (85 last year, 40 this year) and blocked shots (65 last year, 27 this year). However, his complete lack of offensive production has made the center undesirable in pretty much every format this season.

Avalanche's John Mitchell: Finally gets first point with goal in 20th game
Mitchell ended his season-opening 19-game skid without a point by scoring an unassisted goal in Tuesday's win over Boston.
With just 16 shots in those first 19 contests, Mitchell hasn't exactly been the victim of bad luck -- his ice time's way down from past seasons, and he's mostly been invisible when he's gotten out there. There's nothing to see here in most fantasy formats.

Avalanche's John Mitchell: Still pointless this season
Mitchell has yet to record a point in 16 games this year.
Sure, he's a bottom-six grinder whose main role is to provide energy and a checking presence, but a big fat goose egg in the points column is surprising for a guy that's produced at a rate of 0.38 points per game (99 in 261 games) over the last four seasons. However, Mitchell's ice time is down to 12:26 per game from the 15-16-plus minutes he's received over that same span, which is further limiting his opportunities.

Avalanche's John Mitchell: Playing Saturday against Minnesota
Despite being waived by the Avalanche on Friday, Mitchell is in the lineup for Saturday's matchup with the Wild, Drew Spevak of Denver Sports 760 reports.
Mitchell wasn't claimed off waivers by another NHL club, which allowed the Avalanche to keep the veteran forward around for Saturday's contest. The 2003 fifth-round pick will slot into a bottom-six role against Minnesota, centering Andreas Martinsen and Blake Comeau on Colorado's fourth line.

Avalanche's John Mitchell: Waived by team
Mitchell was placed on waivers Friday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
Mitchell played in the Avs' last four games, but was held off the scoresheet and contributed just three shots on goal and two PIM. If the 31-year-old goes unclaimed off the waiver wire, he will be reassigned to AHL San Antonio. The veteran last appeared in the minors during the 2011-12 season in which he logged 14 points in 17 contests. If you are holding onto the center in your fantasy lineups, it may be time to let him go and consider other options.

Avalanche's John Mitchell: Will make season debut Friday
Mitchell (hip) has fully recovered from his injury and will most likely suit up Friday against the Jets, the Denver Post reports.
The Avs have a lengthy break in their schedule, so even though the report notes that Mitchell's pesky hip flexor is 100 percent healed, the veteran will need to wait awhile to make his season debut. The 31-year-old has spent four full seasons with Colorado, topping out at 32 points in 2013-14 before regressing to 26 and 21 in the following two campaigns. That said, Mitchell is a heart-and-soul guy that's far more valuable to the Avs on the ice these days than in fantasy circles.

Avalanche's John Mitchell: Won't travel on road trip
Mitchell (hip) will not travel with the team on their four-game road trip.
Mitchell was a scratch from the Opening Night lineup, and the fact that he's going to sit out the four-game road trip leaves him sidelined at least until Oct. 28 when Colorado returns home to face the Jets.
