Stuart was in training camp with the Blackhawks this offseason on a professional tryout agreement, but never landed a permanent contract. Instead, the blueliner will head overseas to extend his professional career and possibly earn a look from an NHL club heading into 2018-19.

Chicago released Stuart from his professional tryout agreement Thursday.
Fellow defenseman Cody Franson, who's also with the Blackhawks on a PTO, has been impressive during the first week of training camp, making Stuart completely expendable. The 2003 first-round pick may need to head overseas if he'd like to stave off retirement for another year.

Blackhawks' Mark Stuart: Signs tryout agreement
Stuart inked a professional tryout agreement with Chicago on Monday, Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun Times reports.
Stuart saw action in a mere 42 contests for the Jets last season in which he recorded two goals, a pair of helpers and 79 blocked shots. Considering Winnipeg was willing to buy out the blueliner for just $1.2 million in cap savings -- when it has $7.3 million in space -- says a lot. The best-case scenario for Stuart is probably a two-way contract, with time in the AHL a near lock if the veteran wants to continue his professional career.

Mark Stuart: Bought out by Jets
Stuart was placed on waivers by Winnipeg on Friday for the purpose of buying out the final year of his contract, Jim Toth of TSN 1290 reports.
Shedding Stuart's contract will free up approximately $1.2 million in cap space for the Jets this season. The 33-year-old saw his role significantly reduced last year, as he appeared in only 42 games and averaged a mere 12:27 of ice time when he was in the lineup. The emergence of youngsters Josh Morrissey and Julian Melchiori made the veteran blueliner expendable in Winnipeg. If he can secure a new role for the 2017-18 campaign, it will likely be as a third-pairing defenseman at best.

Believe it or not, Stuart actually doubled his point total for the season during Tuesday night's contest. That alone should keep fantasy owners in most formats away, as the 32-year-old has always been known more for his defensive soundness than his offensive prowess.
