Dustin Byfuglien: Contract terminated
Byfuglien and the Jets have reached an agreement to terminate the remainder of the defenseman's contract.
Byfuglien and Winnipeg were mired in a grievance due to the player's refusal to report to training camp this fall, and subsequent ankle surgery without team approval. The Minnesota native was suspended by the team and hasn't appeared in an NHL game since April 20, 2019. While Byfuglien could look to sign with another club this offseason, he has reportedly been considering retirement as well.

Jets' Dustin Byfuglien: Will not play this season
Byfuglien (ankle) will not return for the 2019-20 campaign, Andy Strickland of Fox Sports Midwest reports.
Byfuglien has been suspended by the Jets all season after failing to report to training camp. There was some speculation the towering blueliner would be moved at the deadline, but the fact that he won't play should close the door on that speculation. With this news, Winnipeg could be in the market for another defenseman despite having already added Dylan DeMelo.

Jets' Dustin Byfuglien: Team exploring trade options
The Jets are doing their due diligence on the trade front before reaching a mutual contract termination with Byfuglien (suspension), Frank Seravalli of TSN reports.
Byfuglien remains suspended by the Jets for not reporting to begin the year, and it's believed he hasn't skated since September after undergoing ankle surgery. The 34-year-old defenseman could be an appealing deadline addition for a contender, as he brings playoff experience, including the Stanley Cup run with the Blackhawks in 2010, at minimal risk. If he is moved and decides to report, his prorated cap hit would be just $1.84 million, but if he doesn't report, the receiving team would simply suspend him again and absorb no cap hit. However, interested teams likely want assurances that he would, indeed, report before giving up picks or prospects. If the Jets don't find a willing trade partner, expect the team to follow through with contract termination.

Jets' Dustin Byfuglien: Winnipeg stint coming to end
The Jets and Byfuglien (suspension) are working toward a mutual contract termination, Frank Seravalli of TSN.ca reports.
Byfuglien is under suspension without pay for not reporting to training camp, and the 34-year-old blueliner was considering retirement after undergoing ankle surgery in October. Byfuglien (suspension) recently underwent ankle surgery for a high-ankle sprain suffered late in the 2018-19 campaign, Bob McKenzie of TSN reports.
Byfuglien remains suspended after he failed to report for training camp. There's still a cloud around his status with the team and in the league this season and beyond, but the veteran's procedure at least provides some hope that he may be making an effort toward a return.

Byfuglien (personal) has been suspended by Winnipeg for failing to report to camp, Bob McKenzie of TSN reports.
The Jets elected to suspend Byfuglien so they could get cap relief in the event he doesn't return before the team's first regular-season game. The bruising blueliner is currently away from the team and is considering retirement. If Byfuglien's absence extends into the regular season, his cap hit will be removed from Winnipeg's books for as long as he remains away. The 34-year-old has two years remaining on his current deal.

Jets' Dustin Byfuglien: Reportedly contemplating retirement
Byfuglien -- who is away from the team on personal leave -- is reportedly considering whether to retire and bring his 14-year NHL career to a close, Bob McKenzie of TSN reports.
Neither the Jets nor Byfuglien have spoken publicly about the nature of the veteran's personal leave, but this would be a huge hit to the team's blue line. The Minnesota native played in just 42 games last season due to injuries, which saw him post his lowest point total (31) since the lockout shortened 2012-13 campaign. While the club has internal options to slot into the lineup in Anthony Bitetto and Logan Stanley, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Winnipeg go after Justin Faulk or Rasmus Ristolainen, both of whom are reportedly on the trade block.

Winnipeg officially opened its training camp Friday, so this is unfortunate timing for Byfuglien and the Jets, but he isn't dealing with an injury, so he'll be ready to rock whenever he's ready to return to the team. The towering 6-foot-5 blueliner will be looking to bounce back in 2019-20 after an injury-riddled 2018-19 campaign in which he was limited to just 42 games.

Byfuglien scored a goal and tallied an assist Saturday in a 3-2 Game 6 loss to St. Louis, ending the Jets' 2018-19 season.
Byfuglien came to play Saturday, finishing with a pair of points (one coming shorthanded), but it ultimately wasn't enough to keep the Jets' season alive. The larger-than-life blueliner finishes his playoffs having found the scoresheet eight times in six games.

Byfuglien scored a goal, added an assist, and delivered two hits, a plus-3 rating and three shots on goal in Sunday's 6-3 win over the Blues in Game 3.
Byfuglien has been strong for the Jets with five points, seven hits and nine shots through three games in the series.
