Champions League Matchday 6 scores: Late penalty lifts Liverpool at Inter; Chelsea blow lead at Atalanta, more

Matchday six was full of comebacks and close matches as Liverpool responded to their tumultuous week by defeating Inter away from home. Alessandro Bastoni conceded a penalty late in the match, and Dominik Szoboszlai wouldn't miss from the spot for the eventual 1-0 win. Mohamed Salah was left out of the squad after his comments on how he has been treated at Liverpool, but the Reds wouldn't miss a beat even as Inter pushed for a win late.

Atalanta, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich all overturned early deficits to win their own matches. Ginluca Scamacca and Charles De Ketelaere helped take down Chelsea, a brace from Jules Kounde helped get past Eintracht Frankfurt, and Lennart Karl scored for the third straight game as Bayern got past Sporting CP.

Barcelona's defense yet again will have concerns following their performance, but it's a job well done for Hansi Flick's men on their return to Camp Nou in UCL play. Behind a brace from Mason Greenwood, Marseille held on to win while Tottenham moved up the table after a shutout of their own.

Late penalty to Liverpool

It's a trip on Mac Allister by Bastoni, and Liverpool goes ahead in the 88th minute of play. This could be a massive result for the Reds if they can hold on through the last few minutes and stoppage time.

Atalanta goes ahead

We still have time for some more lead changes, as a few matches are reaching their completion. Charles De Ketelaere gets the go-ahead goal for Atalanta with a vicious finish. Robert Sanchez got a hand to the ball, but it was hit with so much power that it went into the back of the net.

Monaco gets their goal

Chances have been there left and right for the French side, and finally, in the 69th minute of play, they were able to get one through none other than Folarin Balogun. The American has had a tough match, missing good chances, but if you give a top striker enough opportunities to hurt you, they'll do just that, and that's what Balogun did. Now, will it be enough to hold out for a win?

And right back ahead

Three minutes separated Barcelona's goals, and Kounde now has a brace in the second half. This one is assisted by Lamine Yamal, and Barcelona are fully in front as this game has taken off.

We're level in Barcelona

Barca made a change at the half, bringing in Marcus Rashford, and it's one that did make a difference for them as the Englishman netted the assist on Jules Kounde's equalizer. But with how their defense has performed, that won't be enough.

Oh Monaco

Awarded a penalty, Denis Zakaria was up to take for Monaco, but his poor take was saved, and the match is still level. Davidson Sanchez was bailed out there.

Penalty to Tottenham

Right out of the break, Tottenham are on the front foot yet again, and they'll have a penalty after Youssoupha Sanyang brings down a Tottenham player and Mohammed Kudus slots it home.

One half behind us

Most things are as expected, but for Barcelona, there's quite a lot to worry about. Playing their first UCL match at the Camp Nou in more than three years, they trail at the half to Frankfurt and have only been able to put one shot on target during the tie so far. Something has to change in the second half of play, or this will be an ugly result dropped, which will make it quite hard to advance past the league phase for a team with ambitions of winning this competition.

Mason Greenwood joins in on the fun, and ahead of halftime, Marseille goes ahead, and it's an assist for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. All the goals in the first half of this one.

Who else but Julian Alvarez

After a mistake by PSV, Atletico Madrid draw level as Alvarez is left far too open in the box, and he gets the job done, pushing his side to draw level. Atleti have struggled away from home, so this will be a massive result if they can pull it off.

Almost a goal for Liverpool

Injuries have changed the game, but after the pressure that has been on Liverpool, Ibrahima Konate's goal has felt good for a second, but after a lengthy VAR review, it was ruled out due to a handball. This is quite a blow.

FRANKFURT

Oh, Barcelona's defensive woes continue, and it's Ansgar Knauff in the 21st minute to put the German side ahead. Barcelona were cut apart on the counter, and Frankfurt open the Camp Nou with a goal from the opposition. Barcelona will need to clean this up but they give teams these chances game after game.

A blow to Inter

Cristian Chivu has been forced into an early change as Hakan Calhanoglu has had to be withdrawn only 10 minutes in due to a leg injury. The orchestrator of the Inter midfield, this could be quite a blow in the early going, but there will be time for the team to recover.

Prediction: Barcelona 3, Eintracht Frankfurt 2

Neither of these teams have any real ability to defend, with Barcelona conceding 10 goals and Eintracht Frankfurt letting in 14 through five Champions League games so far. An entertaining, and perhaps silly, game is likely in store as a result, but in the end, this will be Barcelona's fixture to lose. Their attackers are likely to show their quality against a porous back line, giving them the edge in an important fixture weeks after their loss at Chelsea. --  Pardeep Cattry

Alphonso Davies is back

It's been quite a time as Davies has been absent for nine months with an ACL injury, and he has now entered the match for Bayern Munich with the team leading 3-1. It's quite a boost for a team as they'll be able to integrate him. There will be four minutes remaining of stoppage time.

Prediction: Inter 2, Liverpool 1

Salah's shadow looms large over this match, though that may only rattle Liverpool so much considering the Egypt international has been far from his peak this season. The Reds' real problem is that no matter how hard manager Arne Slot tries, he cannot seem to find a balance with the players at his disposal. They are inconsistent in more ways than one, making Tuesday's game much more favorable to Inter than one may have anticipated when the league phase schedule came out several months ago.--  Pardeep Cattry

Player to watch: Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool

The answer to this might well be Mohamed Salah if only he were in a position to be watched, Liverpool's star forward left behind on Merseyside following his explosive comments after Saturday's 3-3 draw with Leeds United. Salah is not the only title-winning veteran struggling for form lately and Inter's forwards will be hopeful that the stuttering, error-addled version of Van Dijk from recent weeks takes to the field in the San Siro. At his best Liverpool's captain played with a serenity that radiated across his team mates. Now his struggles seem to be doing the same. -- James Benge

Man of the match: Lautaro Martinez, Inter

The Argentinian striker is in great form and scored three goals in his last two Serie A matches, and scored a total of 11 goals in 18 games in all competitions, including four in the Champions League. Considering the issues Liverpool are facing right now defensively, his skills can definitely become a problem for the team coached by Arne Slot. The Inter captain scored in all five of his Champions League games at the San Siro in 2025 (8 goals). The only player to score in more than six consecutive home appearances in the competition for an Italian club was Andriy Shevchenko for AC Milan (seven from March 2004 to September 2005). -- Francesco Porzio

Player to watch: Lamine Yamal, Barcelona

At 18 years of age, Yamal is already one of the best wingers in the world. Pressed into central areas amid an injury crisis, Yamal proved he's not too shabby as a number 10 either, delivering gaudy chance creation and possession value numbers in a 5-3 win at Real Betis that cemented Barcelona's lead at the top of La Liga. In a clash that is sure to offer plenty of space to operate, this could be another game for Yamal to unleash his precocious talents. -- James Benge

Against the run of play!

Sporting lead at Bayern! You can barely see with the flares, but after a turnover, they got the ball in well, and Kimmich set it into the back of the net for an own goal following a cross into the middle. Vincent Kompany's men may need Alphonso Davies to come off the bench to wrestle control here.

Man of the match: Robert Lewandowski, Barcelona

After losing 3-0 in the last Champions League game against Chelsea, the team coached by Hansi Flick got back on track in the league and have won three matches in a row and thanks to the results of their competitors, they are now four points ahead of Real Madrid. This is an important game for Lewandoski, who faced Frankfurt multiple times over his career. He has scored 15 goals in his last 15 starts against Eintracht Frankfurt across all competitions, including two hat-tricks in two 5-0 victories as a Bayern Munich player. -- Francesco Porzio

Oddly quiet

We've reached the half in Germany, and Bayern can't get much of anything going in the early stages of this match. Harry Kane did hit the post, but Sporting haven't had that much to worry about despite ceding possession so far. Games like this are when Vincent Kompany will miss Jamal Musiala, who is out with an injury until January.

Inter vs. Liverpool: Is Szoboszlai the man to step in for Salah?

A problem position in the Liverpool side this season can only mean one thing, get Dominik Szoboszlai in there. In true Trent Alexander-Arnold fashion, the Hungarian found a way to be the most impactful player on the pitch from full back during his sojourn there earlier in the season. When the rest of the midfield was faltering, the No.8 entered the fray. And now that Salah's mixed zone performance has made himself even more unpickable than his on field displays, it looks like Szoboszlai is going to have be the man for the right flank.

In the three games he has started in the position, Szoboszlai has proven impressive enough. In the 1-1 draw with Sunderland no one made more progressive carries while he and Florian Wirtz led the team in shots. In the 3-3 draw with Leeds Szoboszlai's performances took another step up, four chances created and what looked to be the winner only for the hosts to stun the champions at the death. You'd hardly confuse his output with prime Salah but for a stop-gap option 0.4 expected goals plus expected assists per 90 Premier League minutes is not to be sniffed at.

All the more encouraging is how his presence has brought a slight upswing in form out of Wirtz, who might still be hunting that first Premier League goal but is getting ever closer in recent weeks. When Salah is in the team there is a risk that his need to get up close with the striker forces Wirtz to drop deeper and wider so that he can create with others. With a more natural midfielder out to his right, he can cut out a bit of the ball progression duty he brought on himself and work on dovetailing with the center forward. It hasn't always worked -- the 22 year old was too much like his old self against Leeds -- but even in the positions he takes up, you can see the vision for how Wirtz, who Liverpool need to be a success, can excel with Szoboszlai at his side.

So if moving Szoboszlai to the right is giving passable output for a Salah-less Liverpool and could get the best out of Wirtz, why is there even a question to ask here? Partly because a front four with a repurposed attacking midfielder on one flank and whoever replaces Cody Gakpo on the other likely lacks enough of the stretch in behind factor that Liverpool need (though this is partially true with an ageing Salah in the XI too). More so, however, it is that any move that lessens Szoboszlai's involvement in the game is a bad one for Arne Slot.

In his three games on the right, the 25-year-old has averaged 72 touches per 90 minutes. Put him in midfield and that number swings up to just shy of 85. He uses them well and no wonder. Most teams are better when their best player touches the ball more. So far this season there is no more valuable player for Liverpool than Szosbozlai and when the need for results is as pressing as it is for this team right now, getting him on the ball might have to take priority over almost everything else, even Wirtz's development. -- James Benge
