Champions League scores: Galatasaray need extra time to down 10-man Juventus; PSG, Real Madrid advance

We're all set for the round of 16 draw on Friday. Remarkably, extra time was needed to send Galatasaray through to the round of 16, the last example of a set of games that had a bit of everything. Despite going down a man in the 48th minute of play after Lloyd Kelly was sent off, Juventus scored two more times in regulation to erase a three-goal deficit coming into the match, with none other than American Weston McKennie bringing the magic to force extra time.

Unfortunately, once they got there, you can only stave off Victor Osimhen for so long, and in the 106th minute of play, the Nigerian evaded a sliding challenge by Federico Gatti to nutmeg Juventus keeper Mattia Perin -- who made his first start since Feb. 5. It's a match that Galatasaray will have always expected to advance from, but it certainly took longer than expected to get there.

There was drama all around as Atalanta overturned a two-goal deficit in the first half of play before being awarded a penalty in the final minute of play due to a reckless challenge by Dortmund defender Ramy Bensebaini. His foot ended up hitting the head of striker Nikola Kristovic, drawing blood, and after a VAR check, it was an easy decision to make, and Lazar Samardzic wouldn't miss putting his side through to the round of 16.

Monaco did what they could to push Paris Saint-Germain, drawing level on aggregate at the end of the first half of play before midfielder Mamadou Coulibaly picked up two yellow cards in less than five minutes of play. Marquinhos wasted no time pulling back a goal to put PSG ahead, and despite Monaco getting a goal late, it wouldn't be enough.

Vinicius Junior also scored in the fifth consecutive match for Real Madrid to ensure that they advanced to the Round of 16 after a tense match with Benfica. The Portuguese side scored first, but their lead wouldn't last long as Real Madrid hit right back via Aurelien Tchouameni. Then Vinicius slammed the door to set the teams through the round of 16.

Wednesday's Champions League scores

  • Atalanta 4, Borussia Dortmund 1 (Atalanta advances 4-3 on aggregate)
  • Juventus 3, Galatasaray 2 (AET, Galatasaray advances 7-5 on aggregate)
  • PSG 2, Monaco 2 (PSG advances 5-4 on aggregate)
  • Real Madrid 2, Benfica 1 (Real Madrid advances 3-1 on aggregate)

That's the game

Juventus were already deflated, but Yilmaz was able to net a goal to slam the door despite Juventus taking 28 shots for a total xG of 5.05, which is an absurd number. It was quite a match from start to finish, and it took 30 extra minutes, but Galatasaray will advance, and the pairings for Friday's draw look like this:

  • Galatasaray vs. Liverpool or Tottenham
  • Paris Saint-Germain vs. Barcelona or Chelsea
  • Real Madrid vs. Sporting CP or Manchester City
  • Atalanta vs. Arsenal or Bayern Munich
  • Newcastle United vs. Chelsea or Barcelona
  • Atletico Madrid vs. Tottenham or Liverpool
  • Bodo/Glimt vs. Manchester City or Sporting CP
  • Bayer Leverkusen vs. Bayern Munich or Arsenal

Galatasaray find a breakthrough

This has been a long time coming, but it's that man Victor Osimhen who has gotten his breakthrough deep into the match. He's been giving the Juventus defense hell all day and has finally gotten his reward after Gatti's sliding challenge wasn't enough to get through. 15 more minutes to go.

After an improbable comeback, Juventus will play 30 minutes of extra time with Galatasaray thanks to Weston McKennie's header. Down to 10 men since the 38th minute, Juventus were able to draw level. If things are still level following the 30 minutes, we'll head to penalties.

PSG are through

It was a process to get there, and they needed help from a questionable red card, but they're through 5-4 on aggregate to the round of 16. Juventus will likely head to extra time to determine the tie, while Real Madrid and Benfica are closing things out in stoppage time.

Monaco aren't done yet

We're in stoppage time, and they've drawn level as Teze scored. There's not much time remaining here, so PSG will look to manage the one-goal lea,d but with how these matches are going, you can't rule anything out.

WESTON MCKENNIE EVERYONE

Juventus are now level on aggregate. This is madness, as of course, a Weston McKennie header is what brought them level. They're going to push everything to get this done in regulation down a man, as 30 more minutes at this pace does feel unsustainable.

There it is

An insurance goal indeed for Los Blancos as Real Madrid have gone ahead via Vinicius Junior. It had to be the Brazilian scoring the insurance goal, now adding a goal in the fifth consecutive match. No Kylian Mbappe, no problem.

A moment of concern

There was a long stoppage as Raul Asencio was stretchered off and will be replaced in the match by David Alaba. Real Madrid still have a one goal lead on aggregate, but it'd be nice to have insurance as Benfica have created chances.

Wait! We're not done yet

It's a goal by Juventus, and this one comes from Gatti following a corner kick. 19 minutes remain, and one more goal could force extra time. Galatasaray have only won one game away from home in Champions League play, and nerves will begin to set in at this stage despite Juventus being down a man.

A quickfire turnaround

PSG may have started the second half trailing by a goal and heading to extra time, but no,w after 67 minutes, not only are they up a man but Kvaratskhelia's goal has now put them ahead by two goals on aggregate. I think they can begin planning for the round of 16.

Immediate response

It took less than a minute following the red, and PSG are now ahead via Marquinhos. As long as this holds, they'll be through to the round of 16.

Seeing red all around

Now it's Monaco who have gone down to 10 after Mamadou Coulibaly has been carded twice in three minutes, as Monaco are down to 10 with only 30 minutes remaining in the match. PSG will take advantage of being given this chance.

PSG's first shot on target

It took until the second half of play, but via Joao Neves, the Parsians have found the target for the first time in the match. They'll need to turn that into a goal if they want to avoid extra time.

There goes the Juventus comeback

It's a second yellow card for Lloyd Kelly for a rash challenge, and after a VAR review, it has been upgraded to a straight red as Juventus will finish with 10 for the second straight match. It's the end of the line there.

Halfway through the matches

As things stand, Galatasaray and Real Madrid are through to the last 16, while PSG and Monaco would be heading to extra time, but with 45 minutes to play, anything could happen.

Monaco continue to frustrate

Just because Monaco lost a lead in the first leg doesn't mean they're going to roll over as Maghnes Akliouche has now brought this tie level as we're set for some epic second halves. PSG still don't have a shot on target after 45 minutes of soccer.

Penalty to Juventus

Thuram is taken down in the box, and Juventus will have a chance to pull a goal back from the spot. It's a reckless challenge, but Juventus won't care as this goal could kick their comeback into high gear as Locatelli won't miss from the spot.

It's Real Madrid again, but it won't count

The other late games may not be keeping up, but Los Blancos are scoring enough for everyone involved. This time it's Arda Guler with a birthday goal after turning in a chance from Gonzalo Garcia. After a VAR check, the goal is judged to be offside, and Real Madird will wait for their second.

Two minutes separated the goals, and Tchouameni scored his first goal of the season just when Real Madrid needed it to get back in control of this match following an assist from Fede Valverde.

Benfica strikes first

Rafa Silva makes his return to Benfica from Turkiye and finds the net to bring this tie level witha. tap in from close range. As has been the case in plenty of Real Madrid matches, the defense are allowing too much sece but now they'll need a goal to regain control of the match.

Juventus are pushing

They'll need an early goal, being behind by three goals heading into this, and as they've been pushing the pace early to get it feels like only a matter of time until the opener.

Time for the late matches

They'll have a high bar with what happened in Italy in the early match, but with two matches separated by only one goal, there's plenty to play for.

Samardzic makes no mistake! Atalanta are through!

The last kick of the game will see Atalanta make it to the round of 16, where they could be the last Italian side left standing. They'll face either Bayern Munich or Arsenal there, but this match was a total capitulation for Dortmund. They led 2-0 after the first leg and lost that entire advantage in one half of soccer before a rash challenge from defender Ramy Bensebaini saw him sent off while Atalanta were awarded a penalty at the death. They'd make no mistake, and now it's time for a party in Bergamo.

Red cards all around

It's a penalty for the challenge, but two red cards were handed out to the Dortmund bench before Bensebaini picked up his second yellow card. Total capitulation.

Could this be decided by a penalty?

Kristovic was caught by Bensebaini's trailing leg after a challenge and could be sent off from it being reckless. We're awaiting the VAR check now.

We've got our eyes on the Real Madrid match

All the eyes will be on the Bernabeu where Real Madrid will host Benfica for the second leg after the disgraceful incident that occurred last week in Lisbon between Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni and Vinicius Jr. The two will meet again on Wednesday in Madrid for what will be one of the most awaited clashes of the season, while Benfica manager and former Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho will be suspended after receiving a red card last week in Lisbon. -- Francesco Porzio

Can Juventus come back?

Last week was not a great one for Italy, and while Inter can still plot a path to the round of 16, Juventus may have dug themselves into a hole that's too deep to get out of. Luciano Spalletti's tactical innovations in attack have helped Juventus over the course of the season but it may not be enough against Galatasaray, who have a three-goal advantage and boast two talented goalscorers in Victor Osimhen and Mauro Icardi. The tie is now officially Galatasaray's to lose, and with their first round of 16 berth in 12 years within their reach, they probably won't throw it away now. -- Pardeep Cattry

No Kylian Mbappe for Real Madird

While it's not a surprise that the Real Madrid man is missing out with a knee injury, it does change things as Vinicius Junior will be the central attacker for Los Blancos alongside Gonzalo Garcia, but with the team already ahead by a goal on aggregate, they just need to ensure they manage the match.

Oh my Atalanta

That's three unanswered goals, and the Italian side are flying as Pasalic has scored this one, which will see them advance to the round of 16 as things stand. Borussia Dortmund needs an answer and quickly.
